Using a PIM interface for improving computer medical image processing abilities.

BACKGROUND: Biomedical engineers in particular require fast and powerful data processing systems to process computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans and other medical imaging technologies. However, current computer data processing technologies are unable to satisfy such requirements. A promising approach to addressing these limitations is processing in memory (PIM). Unfortunately, several issues, such as the compatibility and interconnection of PIM with legacy systems, still remain. OBJECTIVE: This paper proposes a standard memory bus-based PIM interface for medical image

Geometric Transformation Algorithm for Acetabular Cup Orientation: Converting 2D Radiographic Projections to 3D Spatial Positioning.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hip replacement is one of the most common and successful surgeries of our time. However, with increasing numbers of total hip arthroplasties, postoperative complications due to inadequate cup positioning are rising. Accurate measurement of acetabular cup inclination and anteversion is critical for optimal outcomes. While various measurement systems exist, they often require additional hardware, specialized training, or lack integration across the care continuum. This study aims to develop and validate software for automated measurement of acetabular cup positioning, comparing i

Ambulatory gastrojejunal manometry in severe motility-like dyspepsia: lack of correlation between dysmotility, symptoms, and gastric emptying.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have failed to identify manometric patterns of gastrointestinal motor activity that can distinguish dyspepsia from health. AIMS: To test the hypothesis that the combined use of prolonged, ambulatory, antrojejunal manometry and computer aided analysis in patients selected for the severity of their symptoms could reveal new insights into gastrointestinal motor activity in patients with severe motility-like dyspesia. METHODS: Twenty four hour antrojejunal ambulatory manometry was performed in 14 patients and 10 healthy volunteers. Parameters characterising digestive

Hybrid Metalens-Compressive Sensing Imaging System for Ultra-Low-Power Edge Detection.

Low-power edge detection is essential for next-generation vision systems that require real-time on-device processing of optical information. Conventional imagers rely on power-intensive digital postprocessing for edge detection, creating a data bottleneck between the image sensor and signal processor. We propose a system-level hybrid optoelectronic edge imaging framework that combines an analog optical computing metalens with a compressive sensing CMOS image sensor (CS-CIS). The spiral metalens with a topological charge of l = + 2 directly images and encodes second-order edge information in

Lower limb motor imagery EEG dataset based on the multi-paradigm and longitudinal-training of stroke patients.

Motor dysfunction is one of the most significant sequelae of stroke, with lower limb impairment being a major concern for stroke patients. Motor imagery (MI) technology based on brain-computer interface (BCI) offers promising rehabilitation potential for stroke patients by activating motor-related brain areas. However, developing a robust BCI-MI system and uncovering the underlying mechanisms of neural plasticity during stroke recovery through such systems requires large-scale datasets. These datasets are particularly needed for accurate lower limb MI in stroke patients and for longitudinal da

A mechanism for growth of topological entropy.

Theoretical and numerical understanding of the key concept of topological entropy is an important problem in dynamical systems. While most existing studies focus on discrete-time systems (maps), this work examines a continuous-time scenario involving global changes in the structure of an observed attractor. As a representative example, we consider the classical Rössler system. For a specific range of parameters of the system, we prove the existence of a trapping region for a certain Poincaré map, which contains a nonempty, compact, and connected invariant set on which the topological entropy o

Background/Objectives: Electroencephalography (EEG)-based emotion recognition plays an important role in affective computing and brain-computer interface applications. However, existing methods often face the challenge of achieving high classification accuracy while maintaining physiological interpretability. Methods: In this study, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) model with a simple architecture for EEG-based emotion classification. The model achieves classification accuracies of 95.21% for low/high arousal, 94.59% for low/high valence, and 93.01% for quaternary classification

Automated Detection and Screening of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Using Computed Tomography Images: A Comprehensive Review and Future Perspectives.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs due to the disruption in the normal functioning of the brain by sudden external forces. The primary and secondary injuries due to TBI include intracranial hematoma (ICH), raised intracranial pressure (ICP), and midline shift (MLS), which can result in significant lifetime disabilities and death. Hence, early diagnosis of TBI is crucial to improve patient outcome. Computed tomography (CT) is the preferred modality of choice to assess the severity of TBI. However, manual visualization and inspection of hematoma and its complications from CT scans is a highly o

Data-efficient Causal Decoding of Spiking Neural Activity using Weighted Voting.

Brain-Computer Interface systems can contribute to a vast set of applications such as overcoming physical disabilities in people with neural injuries or hands-free control of devices in healthy individuals. However, having systems that can accurately interpret intention online remains a challenge in this field. Robust and data-efficient decoding-despite the dynamical nature of cortical activity and causality requirements for physical function-is among the most important challenges that limit the widespread use of these devices for real-world applications. Here, we present a causal, data-effici

Visual sensor based abnormal event detection with moving shadow removal in home healthcare applications.

Vision-based abnormal event detection for home healthcare systems can be greatly improved using visual sensor-based techniques able to detect, track and recognize objects in the scene. However, in moving object detection and tracking processes, moving cast shadows can be misclassified as part of objects or moving objects. Shadow removal is an essential step for developing video surveillance systems. The goal of the primary is to design novel computer vision techniques that can extract objects more accurately and discriminate between abnormal and normal activities. To improve the accuracy of ob

A low-power electronic nose signal-processing chip for a portable artificial olfaction system.

The bulkiness of current electronic nose (E-Nose) systems severely limits their portability. This study designed and fabricated an E-Nose signal-processing chip by using TSMC 0.18-μ m 1P6M complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology to overcome the need to connect the device to a personal computer, which has traditionally been a major stumbling block in reducing the size of E-Nose systems. The proposed chip is based on a conductive polymer sensor array chip composed of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The signal-processing chip comprises an interface circuit, an analog-to-digital converter

Computer-aided detection for screening mammography.

Mammographic film reading is a highly demanding task, particularly in screening programs where the reader must perform a detailed visual search of a large number of images for signs of abnormality that are often subtle or small, and which occur very infrequently. False-negative cases, in which signs of abnormality are missed by a film reader, are known to occur. Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, which automatically detect potential abnormalities and indicate their locations to the reader, have the capacity to reduce the frequency of such errors by ensuring that all suspicious regions of

A novel skeletal drug delivery system using self-setting calcium phosphate cement. 9: Effects of the mixing solution volume on anticancer drug release from homogeneous drug-loaded cement.

The effects of mixing solution volume (0.25-0.65 mL/g) on in vitro drug release from a self-setting bioactive calcium phosphate cement containing the anticancer agent 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) as a model compound were investigated. The drug release profiles from isolated planar surfaces as well as the entire surfaces of cement systems containing 5% 6-MP were measured in simulated body fluid at pH 7.25 and 37.0 degrees C. The drug release rate from both cement system geometries increased with increasing mixing solution volume. Drug release profiles from the planar-release and entire-surface-relea

Spatio-Temporal Control of Vibrotactile Stimulation on OLED Displays With Inverse Filtering.

This work presents an inverse filter method capable of controlling complex and independent haptic stimulations for up to ten fingers interacting concurrently with a display. Our approach extends the inverse filtering framework to support continuous operation, enabling real-time streaming of multitouch vibrotactile signals while accounting for finger motion. We provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis that establishes the relationship between key design parameters-such as actuator count, display mechanical properties, and finger configuration-and system performance metrics, including vibrat
