Computer-aided detection for screening mammography.

Mammographic film reading is a highly demanding task, particularly in screening programs where the reader must perform a detailed visual search of a large number of images for signs of abnormality that are often subtle or small, and which occur very infrequently. False-negative cases, in which signs of abnormality are missed by a film reader, are known to occur. Computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, which automatically detect potential abnormalities and indicate their locations to the reader, have the capacity to reduce the frequency of such errors by ensuring that all suspicious regions of

Screening for renal carcinoma associated mutations in the von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor gene by temperature gradient gel electrophoresis.

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common neoplastic disease of the adult kidney and occurs in its sporadic and hereditary form. Approximately 57% of all renal carcinomas of the clear cell type analyzed revealed a mutation in the von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) gene. In the present work, temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TGGE) is presented as a rapid and precise polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-employing methodology for the detection of mutations in the VHL gene. The theoretical efficiency of TGGE to detect mutations in every base pair of the gene was calculated. According to computer ana

Cloning, genomic organization, and chromosomal localization of human citrate transport protein to the DiGeorge/velocardiofacial syndrome minimal critical region.

DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) and velocardiofacial syndrome have been shown to be associated with microdeletions of chromosomal regions 22q11. More recently, patients with conotruncal anomaly face syndrome and some nonsyndromic patients with isolated forms of conotruncal cardiac defects have been found to have 22q11 microdeletions as well. The commonly deleted region, called the DiGeorge chromosomal region (DGCR), spans approximately 1.2 Mb and is estimated to contain at least 30 genes. We report a computational approach for gene identification that makes use of large-scale sequencing of cosmids fro

Some methodological issues in neuroradiological research in psychiatry.

An outline is given of some of the methodological issues discussed in neuroradiological research on psychiatric illness. Strengths and shortcomings of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in depicting and quantifying brain structures are described. Temporal lobe anatomy and pathology are easily accessible to MRI, whereas limits on anatomical delineation hamper approaches to frontal lobe study. White matter hyperintense lesions are sensitively depicted by MRI, but specificity is limited. Distinction of vascular and primary degenerative dementia is considerably improved by CT and MRI analysis. Compu

Immediate noise effects on cochlear vasculature in the guinea pig.

Nine guinea pigs were exposed to a 4 kHz narrow band noise at 120 dB for 30 minutes. The animals were killed immediately following exposure and the cochlear tissues prepared using a soft-surface preparation technique. Experimental and control animals were mixed and randomly assessed without prior knowledge of the groups of which the specimens belonged. The results were analysed by computer. Statistically significant differences in the vasculature between noise-exposed and control animals of a general nature included: more changes in spiral lamina than external wall vessels, more changes in ves

Artificial intelligence in the detection of dental pulp calcifications: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Dental pulp calcifications, including pulp stones and diffuse calcific changes, can complicate endodontic access, canal negotiation, and treatment planning. Artificial intelligence may support radiographic detection of these findings, but the available evidence remains limited and methodologically heterogeneous. This scoping review mapped peer-reviewed studies that applied artificial intelligence to detect, classify, or segment dental pulp calcifications on two-dimensional radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the

Systematic review of biomechanical forces associated with carotid plaque disruption and stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Carotid plaque disruption with release of atheroembolic debris and consequent brain infarction is the primary mechanism for brain injury in patients with carotid stenosis. Disease severity is quantified traditionally by the degree of stenosis, although it is not an accurate marker of stroke risk. It has been proposed that biomechanical forces acting on a carotid plaque may render it vulnerable to rupture by causing adverse remodeling of its morphology or by direct disruption. We conducted a systematic review to assess the forces acting on carotid plaques and their relationship to ad

Quantitative perfusion imaging from non-contrast micro-ct for pulmonary embolism evaluation in preclinical models.

Objective.Pulmonary embolism (PE) has a high mortality rate, making early diagnosis critical for patient survival. While computed tomography (CT) pulmonary angiography effectively aids diagnosis and embolus localization, patients with iodine allergies and kidney disease experience delayed diagnosis and/or adverse effects. This exploratory preclinical study qualitatively describes PE-induced hemodynamic changes observable in CT perfusion imaging (CT-P), a computationally derived surrogate for perfusion imaging derived from non-contrast four-dimensional CT (4DCT), in a small pilot cohort.Approac

SAL-YOLO-DeepSeek: a lightweight real-time detection and LLM-driven decision framework for intelligent escalator safety monitoring.

To address the challenges of high passenger density, severe object occlusion, and limited computational resources in escalator scenarios, this paper proposes SAL-YOLO, a lightweight detection model, and develops a safety warning system. The model is optimized in multiple dimensions based on the YOLOv8n architecture: (1) A lightweight backbone network, StarNet, is designed by integrating depth-wise separable convolutions and residual connections to improve feature extraction efficiency. (2) A Transformer-based Adaptive Image Feature Integration (AIFI) module is integrated to capture global cont

Reconstructing microvascular network skeletons from 3D images: What is the ground truth?

Structural changes to microvascular networks are increasingly highlighted as markers of pathogenesis in a wide range of disease, e.g. Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and tumour growth. This has motivated the development of dedicated 3D imaging techniques, alongside the creation of computational modelling frameworks capable of using 3D reconstructed networks to simulate functional behaviours such as blood flow or transport processes. Extraction of 3D networks from imaging data broadly consists of two image processing steps: segmentation followed by skeletonisation. Much research effort h

Engineering point of view on liver transplantation strategies: multi-level modeling of hepatic perfusion.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic perfusion plays a crucial role in liver transplantation strategies, for example, when preserving procured organs with the use of machine perfusion preservation (MP) and in the case of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). Liver hemodynamics are not yet fully understood because of insufficient knowledge on the hepatic vascular morphology and its perfusion characteristics, hampering the optimization of liver transplantation procedures. To this end, we developed computer models to simulate the complex blood circulation through the liver from the macro-scale down to the te

Probability of mediastinal involvement in non-small-cell lung cancer: a statistical definition of the clinical target volume for 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy?

PURPOSE: Conformal irradiation (3D-CRT) of non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is largely based on precise definition of the nodal clinical target volume (CTVn). A reduction of the number of nodal stations to be irradiated would facilitate tumor dose escalation. The aim of this study was to design a mathematical tool based on documented data to predict the risk of metastatic involvement for each nodal station. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We reviewed the large surgical series published in the literature to identify the main pretreatment parameters that modify the risk of nodal invasion. The proba

Mandibular dysmorphology in patients with unilateral cleft lip and cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Conventional studies of the cleft lip/palate (CLP) dysmorphology have mainly focused on deformities of the lip, nose, and maxilla, while ignoring the mandible. Reasons for that were the lack of well-defined mandibular deformity and restriction from the research methodology. METHODS: This study used 3-dimensional computed tomography (CT) imaging data from 35 patients with unilateral CLP. The 3-dimensional images were rotated into a neutral position. Eight cephalometric landmarks were recorded: the pogonion (PG) and the infradentale (ID) from the frontal view; and the condylion (CO)

Deep Reinforcement Learning-Empowered Cost-Effective Federated Video Surveillance Management Framework.

Video surveillance systems are integral to bolstering safety and security across multiple settings. With the advent of deep learning (DL), a specialization within machine learning (ML), these systems have been significantly augmented to facilitate DL-based video surveillance services with notable precision. Nevertheless, DL-based video surveillance services, which necessitate the tracking of object movement and motion tracking (e.g., to identify unusual object behaviors), can demand a significant portion of computational and memory resources. This includes utilizing GPU computing power for mod
