Muscle contractures and adenosine triphosphate depletion in porcine malignant hyperthermia.

This study compares several methods for diagnosing susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia, using two groups of Poland China swine narrowly defined as genetically susceptible or normal (five pigs each) depending respectively on their response to halothane or to halothane and succinylcholine. Vastus medialis muscle biopsies were excised under thiopental-N2O-O2 anesthesia and used for examination of (1) contracture responses to halothane, (2) contracture responses to caffeine and halothane-caffeine, and (3) adenosine triphosphate (ATP) depletion with and without halothane. All studies were perf…

Occurrence of myofibroblasts in the different phases of morbus Dupuytren (Dupuytren's contracture).

Twenty-one surgically removed specimens of Morbus Dupuytren (M. D.) were studied by light and electron microscopy. The cell type observed in … ransitional cellular differentiation. The significance of myofibroblasts for the development of the contracture of M. D. is discussed.

Dupuytren's disease--a study of the pattern of distribution and stage of contracture in the hand.

The distribution and stages of contracture in the digits are examined in 901 persons with Dupuytren's disease and collected into an epidemiological study of 15,950 persons in a small Norwegian town. The frequency of contracted digits counted from the total number of affected hands, are for men (women in parentheses): Thumb 3.0% (0.6), Index finger 1.2% (1.7), Middle finger 28.3% (27.9), Ring finger 85.1% (92.3) and Little finger 45.4% (39.5). The most common combination of affected fingers are ring and little fingers. At corresponding ages, the contracture is more severe in men than in women, …

[Angiopasm and lesion of the ulnar nerve in Dupuytren's contracture (author's transl)].

30 patients with Dupuytren's contracture were investigated by venous occlusion plethysmography of the index and ring fingers of both hands. The results are evaluated in respect to the clinical and electroneurophysiological findings. Special attention was given to the blood flow disturbances which have plethysmographically appeared to be a significant feature of Dupuytren's contracture and also to ulnar nerve lesions in individual cases. The finger venous occlusion plethysmography technique of Goetz (1934) has been further developed and a suitable apparatus constructed for the purpose of these …

Presence of modified fibroblasts in ischemic contracture of the intrinsic musculature of the hand.

Biopsies of fibrotic interosseous muscles were obtained from three patients with ischemic contracture of the intrinsic muscles of the hand. Control biopsies were taken from normal contralateral interossei and from normal interossei crushed three weeks earlier. Examination of the specimens from the affected muscles under the electron microscope demonstrated large numbers of modified fibroblasts with ultrastructural features of both fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells. The atypical fibroblasts observed resembled myofibroblasts seen in contracting wounds, Dupuytren's contracture, stenosing tenosy…
