Limitations of laparoscopy for bilateral nephrectomy for autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

PURPOSE: We retrospectively studied outcomes following bilateral hand assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 18 patients with symptomatic autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease who underwent bilateral hand assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy. Preoperative radiographic imaging was reviewed retrospectively to determine kidney size based on an ellipsoid shape. A visual analog pain scale with scores of 0 to 10 to assess pain related to autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease was measured preoperatively and postoperatively. RES

[The comparison of open and laparoscopic surgeries of the locally advanced chemo-irradiated rectum tumours].

Introduction: The raison d'etre of laparoscopic surgery of colonic tumours is supported by many I/a level evidence. There are a lot of excellent early and late results regarding sigmoid and upper third rectum tumours in favour of laparoscopic surgery. There are not many literature proposals like this regarding chemo-irradiated tumours. Material and method: One hundred ninety-six patients received neoadjuvant treatment due to lower and middle third rectum tumours in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County Hospital between the 1st of January 2006 and the 31st of December 2011. Twelve patients out the 19

Current indications for laparoscopic adrenalectomy in the era of minimally invasive surgery.

The aim of this study was to clarify the current indications for laparoscopic adrenalectomy, reviewing both our own experience and the literature data. Since January 2000, 22 patients have undergone adrenalectomy in our department: 17 (77.3%) with the laparoscopic approach and 5 (22.7%) with the traditional one. The indications for laparoscopy were: 6 Cushing's adenomas, 4 aldosterone-producing adenomas, 4 non-functional adenomas, 2 pituitary-dependent bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasias and 1 metachronous adrenal metastasis. The conversion rate to laparotomy was 11.7%. The indications for t

The acute surgical unit model verses the traditional "on call" model: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The acute surgical unit (ASU) is a novel model for the provision of emergency general surgery care. The ASU model was initially developed in New South Wales hospitals during 2005 and 2006. Several studies have analysed the effects on patient outcomes and timeliness of care for nontrauma patients presenting with acute general surgical conditions. The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis to determine the efficacy of the ASU model compared with the traditional on-call model for specific conditions. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBA

Retrospective cohort study of minimally invasive surgical approaches for pediatric intussusception.

Intussusception is a common pediatric emergency that causes significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- to middle-income countries. The laparoscopic management of intussusception following failed non-invasive methods remains a topic of debate. This study aims to evaluate the long-term outcomes of minimally invasive approaches for intussusception. A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery for intussusception between January 2016 and December 2020 at our institution. Data on patient demographics, pre-operative and intra-operative va

Results of 1245 endoscopic carpal tunnel decompressions.

Between 1994 and 2000, the senior author performed 1245 endoscopic carpal tunnel decompressions. There were 291 bilateral cases. A telephone review was conducted of those patients who had not had an early excellent result, or conversion to an open procedure. Ninety-four per cent follow-up of patients in this group was achieved; 88% had an early excellent result with no subsequent problems. In 33 hands (3%) the carpal tunnel was opened, because of abnormal anatomy or poor view. A further 5% had a late excellent result. Seventeen hands (1%) have required subsequent open decompression, with adher

Endovascular aneurysm repair conversion is an increasingly common indication for open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

OBJECTIVE: Although endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) reintervention is common, conversion to open repair (EVAR-c) occurs less frequently but can be associated with significant technical complexity and perioperative risk. There is a paucity of data highlighting the evolution of periprocedural results surrounding EVAR-c and change in practice patterns, especially for referral centers that increasingly manage EVAR failures. The purpose of this analysis was to perform a temporal analysis of our EVAR-c experience and describe changes in patient selection, operative details, and outcomes. METHOD
