BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: The treatment of bioprosthetic tissue routinely involves the use of glutaraldehyde, although the specific chemistry of glutaraldehyde fixation is not fully understood. Descriptions of definitive work on this reaction using model compounds are limited. The aim of the present study was to increase our understanding of the chemistry involved in the treatment of collagen-rich tissue with glutaraldehyde. Initially, 6-aminohexanoic acid (6-AHA) was used to model the lysine/hydroxylysine molecules in collagen before studying the more complex chemistry of the tissue.

Mechanistic aspects of the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with methemoglobin with respect to phenothiazine oxidation have been studied. Three phenothiazines, methoxy- (MoPZ), chlor- (CPZ) and methoxycarbonylpromazine (MaPZ), have been used. Barium enema is used to screen patients with gastrointestinal bleeding who do not want to undergo colonoscopy. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is usually the bowel preparation of choice. Few allergic reactions from this product have been reported; these include urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylaxis. Reactions are thought to result from a small amount of PEG crossing the intestinal mucosa, which, in some patients, is sufficient to provoke an anaphylactic reaction.

A detailed chemical kinetic model for oxidation of CS2 has been developed, on the basis of ab initio calculations for key reactions, including CS2 + O2 and CS + O2, and data from literature. Readily available from esters or ketones, cyclopropanols are inclined to undergo diverse ring-opening transformations. Their one-electron oxidation is a conventional way to β-carbonyl radicals. However, despite this fact, their application as a coupling partner in dual photoredox and nickel-catalyzed reactions with organic halides remains underdeveloped. Here, we report that the Ti(OiPr)4 additive enables this elusive cross-coupling with aryl and alkenyl bromides leading to β-substituted ketones.

An 17O NMR spectroscopy survey of more than 100 ubiquitous organic solvents and compounds, including some typical oxofluorinated solvents such as hexafluoroisopropanol, trifluoroethanol, trifluoroacetic acid, and others, is presented with D2O as a reference. A strong alternating α,β-CF3-substituent chemical shift effect was thus observed. This alternating deshielding-shielding effect is suspected to have a role in the exceptional properties of these oxofluorinated solvents, notably in oxidative cross-coupling reactions.

The concurrent development of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and myasthenia gravis (MG) is rare. It has been associated with molecular mimicry between infectious agents and self-antigens. Such antibodies may show cross-reactions against both myelin proteins of peripheral nerves and acetylcholine receptors of neuromuscular junctions. Thymoma-associated multi-organ autoimmunity may also play a role in initiating autoimmune process. We present such a case with the concurrent development of GBS and MG.

80% of all cases in food allergy in adults are preceded by a clinical or subclinical sensitisation to inhalative allergens. Food allergy is caused by cross-reactions between ingested food and inhaled particles. We report a patient suffering from the house-dust mite-crustaceans-molluscs-syndrome. Here, house-dust mite is the sensitising agent, therefore even first ingestion of invertebrates such as snails, shrimps, mussels or oysters can lead to severe anaphylaxis.

Urine was concentrated 20-fold for assay for CAg of Schistosoma japonicum. mAb-RIHA and mAb-DotELISA were positive in 78, 31% and 65.06% of cases respectively, of 83 patients with acute schistosomiasis. The false positive rates in 101 healthy controls were 14.85% and 0%, respectively. Cross-reactions (using mAb-RIHA) were seen in 16.36% and 14.28% of patients with clonorchiasis, 49 patients with ankylostomiasis, respectively. Corresponding figures for mAb-DotELISA were 0% and 0%.

We present a patient with psoriasis who developed exfoliative dermatitis with concomitant fever, malaise and liver enzyme elevations, two days after the introduction of the new calcium antagonist diltiazem. The symptoms rapidly resolved after discontinuation of diltiazem and treatment with prednisone. Three years previously, this patient developed a similar reaction after 12 days of treatment with chloroquine. Diltiazem and chloroquine have a structural resemblance, which suggests that cross-reactions between these drugs may occur.

Among the cereal ingestants, rice, rye, wheat, corn and oats, provocative skin tests of patients differed according to age. Sensitivity to rice and oats was low for children and that to rice in particular was high for adults, suggesting a differential immunological response to rice allergens. Compared to patient grass pollen reactions, response to ingestants was noticeably lower. Cross-reactivity among ingestants was also lower, particularly between oats and the other cereals.
