A 6-year-old girl was found to show a presacral epidermoid cyst which had a communication with the spinal canal. The patient was admitted as a case of meningitis, but squamous cells and cholesterin crystals were observed in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the CSF cholesterol level was very high. Diagnosis was established by myelography, and a cyst measuring 4.5 x 6.0 x 4.0 cm wide was totally excised surgically. A comparative discussion of this case and other reported cases of dermoid and epidermoid cysts in the central nervous system is given.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is one of the most common life-threatening monogenetic diseases characterized by progressive enlargement of fluid-filled renal cysts. Our previous study has shown that Ganoderma triterpenes (GT) retards PKD renal cyst development. In the present study we identified the effective ingredient of GT in suppression of kidney cyst development. Using an in vitro MDCK cystogenesis model, we identified ganoderic acid A (GA-A) as the most promising candidate among the 12 ganoderic acid (GA) monomers. We further showed that GA-A (6.25-100 μM) significa

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to document the dynamic behavior of a choroid plexus cyst of the third ventricle. Although these lesions may float freely within the ventricle leading to intermittent obstruction of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation at variable points in a single patient, such a phenomenon has only been documented using cranial ultrasonography and was never observed intraoperatively.
METHODS: We endoscopically treated a case of third ventricular choroid plexus cyst in a 9-year-old boy who presented with headaches and disturbed conscious level. He underwent a transvent

Simple liver cysts are common, rarely causing significant morbidity or mortality. Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is caused by obstruction of hepatic venous outflow and is the leading cause of postsinusoidal liver failure. We present a rare case of BCS caused by a simple hepatic cyst. A 16 cm × 16 cm liver cyst was found on computed tomography of a 66-year-old woman presenting with abdominal pain. The cyst had become infected, thus enlarged, exerting mass effect with almost complete compression of the inferior vena cava. Shortly after admission, the patient developed acute liver failure, with deran

PURPOSE: Ciliated Hepatic Foregut Cyst (CHFC) is a rare congenital lesion arising from the embryonic foregut. Since squamous cell carcinomas arising from CHFC have been reported in adults, complete resection should be considered. We report our experience with CHFC.
METHODS: We reviewed the charts of 2 patients who had surgery after prenatal detection of a CHFC and 2 patients with postnatal diagnosis.
RESULTS: Two patients had antenatally detected liver cyst. Postnatal ultrasonography showed a cyst in segment IV, with wall calcifications and sediments. Bile ducts were encased in the wall of t

Two patients with choledochal cyst who needed an emergent biliary drainage are presented. Case 1: Spontaneous rupture of the cyst was demonstrated by hepatobiliary scintigram in a 21-month-old girl and an emergent T-tube drainage relieved her symptom. Acute obstruction by protein plugs was considered to have caused rapid expansion of the cyst, which resulted in rupture eventually. Case 2: Marked hypoproteinemia was demonstrated in a 29-month-old boy with choledochal cyst. Bile drainage through Foley catheter promptly made the serum protein level elevated above normal range. Portal hypertension

The authors report the results of internal irradiation with labeled chromic phosphate (32P) and gold-198 (198Au) colloid in eight cases of cystic craniopharyngiomas. They used a newly developed dosimetric formula, by which the radiation dose at the cyst wall and at any point far from the radioactive source can be calculated. Ten courses of irradiation in eight patients were carried out by injection of either 32P or 198Au colloid into the cyst through an Ommaya drainage system that had been placed at craniotomy. Follow-up studies ranging from 13 to 156 months revealed that all cysts were effect

There is a paucity of data regarding using platelet-rich plasma therapy for Baker's cyst-associated medial meniscal tear. To date, conservative treatments for this type of condition include aspiration of fluid effusion with steroid injection and physical therapy. When this treatment fails, arthroscopic debridement, meniscectomy, cyst decompression and open cystectomy are available surgical management options. Recurrence rates, however, are high such that even these procedures fail to provide long-term pain relief. This case study explores the benefits of leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma the

CASE SUMMARY: A 7-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat was presented with a 3-month history of dyspnea when exercising and increased respiratory noise when purring. Initial radiographs identified a suspected laryngeal mass. Point-of-care ultrasound found a fluid-filled structure on the larynx, which was drained percutaneously. The cat initially recovered well but, due to recurrence of clinical signs, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed the presence of a laryngeal cyst that was subsequently surgically resected. Histopathological analysis was consistent with a suspected thyroglossa

The tibial nerve intraneural ganglion cyst-which presents with fluid accumulated inside the nerve epineurium-is a rare etiology of tarsal tunnel syndrome. We report a case with insidious onset of numbness over his left medial ankle. Ultrasound imaging revealed that the tibial nerve was encircled by crescent-shaped anechoic substances, spanning from the distal leg to the sole. Magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a thickened tibial nerve wrapped by hyperintense materials in the tarsal tunnel. Some effusion was observed besides the tibialis posterior and flexor digitorum tendons as well. The pat

Sacral perineural (Tarlov) cysts are benign, cerebrospinal fluid containing lesions of the spinal nerve root sheath. They are usually asymptomatic; however, a small proportion have the potential to cause compression of nerve roots and/or the cauda equina. We report a case of a 61-year-old man who presented with acute onset back pain associated with bilateral radiculopathy. Between referral and consultation, the patient developed urinary dysfunction which resolved spontaneously.MRI revealed haemorrhage within a Tarlov cyst, resulting in compression of the cauda equina. Due to the considerable cl

Major progress has been achieved in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease in the last 30 years; Progress in imaging procedures has be … o-hit model for cyst formation has recently been put forward. The link between the gene defects and cyst fluid formation and progression is still unknown. In addition, cystic and non-cystic lesions coexist in the disease, underlining that the primary molecular defect is located upstream of the mechanism of cyst formation.

Cysticercosis due to Taenia solium is one of the most common public health problems in various regions of the world. We have performed prolon magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) experiments of the fluid aspirated from cysticerci excised from skeletal muscle (n = 16) and brain (n = 9) of infected swine to compare the metabolite pattern of cysticerci in different predilection sites. Perchloric acid extract of cysticercus cysts excised from skeletal muscles (n = 16) was also prepared to ascertain water-soluble, low molecular weight metabolites using 1H MRS. Absolute quantification and statis

A cyst may be defined as a pathological (or abnormal) body cavity, usually lined by epithelium, which contains fluid (gas or liquid) or semi-solid substances other than (primarily) pus. Even this definition is contentious, as some pathologists prefer the term pseudocyst or cavity when there is no epithelial lining. However, the above definition, based on that of Kramer, is as inclusive as possible. Cysts of the mouth and jaws are fairly common and their management is an essential component of oral surgery. This third article in the series deals with the classification, diagnosis and management

We describe gross and histopathology of cysts found in the epididymis of the European bison (Bison bonasus). The material was collected from 107, 3 mo to 20 yr old, free-ranging, culled males from the Białowieza Primeval Forest (Poland). Epididymal cysts were observed in 65 (61%) of bison of varying ages. They were primarily in the head of epididymis and less often in the corpus or tail. The cysts contained opalescent fluid devoid of spermatozoa. They were lined by epithelium resembling that of efferent ducts and appeared to be congenital abnormalities.

Dermoid cysts of the anterior fontanel present as a tumor lesion that tenses up when the child cries or strains. Their midline position in the skull, the fact that some of these cysts contain clear fluid and the presence of an underlying bone defect, lead the clinician to the erroneous diagnosis of encephalocele, for which they are sent for consultation. We report a series of five of these cysts (3 dermoid and 2 epidermoid) located over the anterior fontanel, remark on their clinical significance, and stress their differential diagnosis from encephalocele and from other tumor lesions of the an

BACKGROUND: Progressive cyst enlargement, the hallmark of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and autosomal-recessive (ARPK … epinephrine, DDAVP, adenosine, and PGE(2) were diminished by receptor-specific inhibitors. Pools of cyst fluid collected individually from 16 of 19 ADPKD kidneys increased, to varying degrees, cAMP levels in ADPKD and ARPKD cells. PGE(2), beta-adrenergic and AVP antagonists partially inhibited cAMP accumulation in response to fluids from three kidneys, but a …

Transepithelial chloride and fluid secretion by many types of epithelia involves activation of a conductive K(+) pathway that serves to support the electrochemical driving force for Cl(-) secretion. This study sought to determine if such a pathway is involved in Cl(-) and fluid secretion by the cystic epithelia in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Primary cultures of cells derived from the cysts of patients with ADPKD were used. Confluent monolayers of these cells, mounted in Ussing chambers, were stimulated to secrete Cl(-) by application of the adenylyl cyclase agonist, f
