WAARDENBURG'S SYNDROME AND HETEROCHROMIA IRIDUM IN A DEAF SCHOOL POPULATION.

Waardenburg's syndrome consists of lateral displacement of the inner canthi of the eyes (dystopia canthorum), a broad nasal root and confluent eyebrows, heterochromia iridum, a white forelock and congenital deafness. The syndrome is inherited as a dominant, but affected individuals do not necessarily have all of the characteristics cited.Five hundred and fourteen pupils at a school for the deaf were screened for features of this syndrome. Three cases were discovered. Eleven other deaf children were found to have heterochromia iridum and two more had white forelocks. The interocular dimensions …

Teacher reports of ASL literacy instruction in deaf education.

The development of American Sign Language (ASL) literacy (or signacy) in deaf students is influenced by the exposure and instruction they receive, yet research on current ASL teaching practices remains limited. This study investigates how teachers in deaf education approach ASL literacy instruction through a nationwide survey and focus groups. The research explored six key areas: curriculum and standards, instructional methods, time allocation, genre instruction, and teacher preparation. Findings indicate that while ASL literacy instruction is recognized as an important component of bilingual

Women's way of leading-deaf led and community rooted.

Deaf women's leadership challenges dominant models of authority by centering relational trust, cultural fluency, and community care. Based on survey and interview insights, it highlights themes of trailblazing, self-authored roles, intersectional barriers, and leadership bias. Deaf women reclaim leadership through language and identity as sources of visibility and power. Their experiences reveal systemic barriers such as sexism, audism, tokenism, intra-community critique, as well as sustaining values of resilience, mentorship and collective celebration, urges for investment in Deaf-led mentors

The complexity in deaf and hard-of-hearing multilingual learner education.

Deaf and hard-of-hearing Multilingual Learners (DMLs) are Deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are either born outside of the country they currently receive schooling in or have both parents born outside of that country, using a language other than the national spoken language at home. This group is growing in numbers and contributes significantly to the increasing linguistic and cultural diversity in Deaf education. This systematic review synthesizes findings from 17 peer-reviewed empirical studies, identifying four educational levels relevant to DMLs: context, organization, educators, and s

Dyadic analysis of parenting stress in parents of deaf children.

Hearing parents of deaf children may face parenting stress related to the multiple challenges associated with deafness. Several factors may contribute to the level of stress they encounter. This study examined the dyadic relationships between fathers' and mothers' parenting stress and potential associated factors. Twenty-one French parental couples of deaf children completed questionnaires assessing parenting stress, parental involvement, parental self-efficacy, and social support needs. The results revealed significant associations between parenting stress and the three measured factors-paren…

Sign language ideologies in deaf education in Trinidad and Tobago.

This paper, representing a multilingual Global South-Global North deaf research collaboration, reports and critically analyzes findings from interviews with 5 deaf adult and 5 sign language interpreter participants regarding their educational and training experiences in the postcolonial Caribbean environment of Trinidad and Tobago. Caribbean sign languages are frequently said to be varieties of American Sign Language (ASL) and/or to have been displaced by ASL in schools with deaf learners. In the anglophone Caribbean context, deaf children have not had access to early childhood care and educat

Analyzing the influence of deafness on serial position function for letters.

Previous research has shown that letter and digit identification typically follows a W-shaped serial position function, whereas symbol identification exhibits an inverted U-shaped pattern. Given that reading outcomes vary widely among deaf populations, the present study investigated whether deaf adults display serial position functions similar to hearing adults. Using the Target-in-String Identification paradigm, we compared letter, digit, and symbol recognition across five target positions in matched groups of deaf and hearing participants. Both groups demonstrated a pronounced first-letter a

Institutional supports and access inequities for deaf college students.

Deaf college students frequently encounter postsecondary environments where access is delivered through accommodations rather than through structural inclusion. This study investigates how deaf students experience three validated dimensions of campus climate, accommodating learning environments (ALE), campus connectedness (CC), and deaf-affirming climate (DAC), using data from 193 students at broad-access U.S. institutions. Descriptive, inferential, and exploratory modeling analyses show ALE is rated more positively than CC or DAC, with DAC emerging as the lowest-rated dimension, indicating pe
