BACKGROUND: Maternal depression and anxiety have been associated with deleterious child outcomes. It is, however, unclear how the chronicity and timing of maternal mental health problems predict child development outcomes. The aim of the current study was to assess the effect of both chronicity and timing of maternal anxiety and depression in pregnancy, infancy, and the toddler period on children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms, as well as social and communication skills at age 5.
METHOD: Participants were 1,992 mother-child pairs drawn from a large prospective pregnancy cohort. Mo

Twenty-six women with a history of bipolar or schizoaffective disorder, 17 women with histories of major depressive disorder and 45 control women without any previous psychiatric history were assessed in the 9th month of pregnancy on selected psychosocial measures. No subject was a 'case' as defined by the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) from this time until the delivery. Within 6 months postpartum, 22 (51%) of the women with histories of mental illness were categorised as having relapsed (RDC case). Twelve women developed a psychosis (mania, hypomania or schizomania) and these illnesses oc

The mental health effects of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on postpartum women are of increasing concern among mental health practitioners. To date, only a handful of studies have explored the emotional impact of the pandemic surrounding pregnancy and none have investigated the consequence of pandemic-related social restrictions on the postpartum mood of those living among different socioeconomic status (SES). All postpartum patients appearing to the Mount Sinai Health System for their postpartum appointmen

Health problems can develop during a pregnancy, turning it into a high risk. The aim of this study was to explore the influence of hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth as risk factors for health-related quality of life (HRQL) and depressive symptoms during late pregnancy and postpartum. A prospective, longitudinal study was performed with three assessments. Ninety women were recruited in the study including 29 controls. HRQL was measured using the WHO-QOL-BREF questionnaire. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Stati

Suicidal ideation and behaviour (SIB) in the perinatal period is prevalent in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Past work has been limited by reliance on self-rated scales, and there are few data on SIB severity in such settings. We collected cross-sectional data on SIB using a clinician-administered scale and explored risk factors associated with the presence of SIB and SIB severity. Data were collected from the Drakenstein Child Health Study cohort antenatally and at 6 months postpartum. SIB was measured using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, and potential sociodemo

Women are at higher risk than men to develop depressive episodes during the reproductive years. Furthermore, women are vulnerable to depressions associated with oral contraceptives, abortion, the premenstrual period, the puerperium, and menopause. The phenomenology and the biologic mechanisms involved in these illnesses perhaps should be viewed in the context of other manifestations of the link between depression and female reproductive functions. For example, women are especially vulnerable to a rapid cycling form of affective illness and to hypothyroidism, an associated factor for this form

Antithyroid antibodies are classified to immunoglobulin G. It is a varied group of antibodies as there are antibodies against TSH-receptor, against thyroid peroxidase and also against thyroglobulin. Pregnancy is a period in which the titres of antibodies decrease to protect fetus from abortion; but just after delivery they increase again. The clinical implications of this fact are varied and concern not only the thyroid gland but also other organs. Postpartum thyroid dysfunction (PPD) is one, possible disturbance due to presence of antithyroid antibodies. It can be divided into two various type

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to compare the pregnancy and postpartum self-reported mood and mental health status of women who conceived with assisted reproductive technology (ART) with those of women who conceived spontaneously.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 1176 pregnant women from prenatal clinics in the Ontario Birth Study were enrolled. In the pregnancy and the postpartum period, women who conceived with ART, including in vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination, were compared with women who conceived spontaneously regarding depression and anxiety at 12-16 weeks and

BACKGROUND: Whilst childbirth is a leading cause of mental illness in women, how it affects women at different ages is unknown.
AIMS: We examine whether the effect of childbirth on mental illness varies at different ages.
METHODS: From 2,657,751 women identified from a UK population-based primary care database, 355,864 postpartum periods, with no history of mental illness, were matched on year of birth and general practice to 1,420,350 non-postpartum periods. Cox regression models were used to compare incident mental illness between postpartum and non-postpartum periods. These were measured

The aim of this secondary analysis was to determine whether seasonal light exposure, categorized by type of day length, is associated with or predictive of depressive symptoms in late pregnancy and the first 3 months postpartum. Women (n = 279) expecting their first child were recruited from prenatal clinics and childbirth education classes. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Day lengths were categorized into short, lengthening, long and shortening. Data analysis included linear mixed models and multiple linear regression. When days we

Although postpartum depression and other perinatal disorders have been the subject of increased research attention, important questions remain regarding women who actively seek psychiatric treatment during pregnancy and the postpartum period. In this study, we examined clinical records of 500 perinatal psychiatric patients who received treatment in a psychiatric day hospital (N = 398) or outpatient behavioral health clinic (N = 102). Patients' presenting diagnoses, psychiatric history, treatment course, and depressive symptoms were recorded. The majority of women had major depression as their

BACKGROUND: the present quantitative longitudinal study focuses on the inter-relationships between sexual abuse, distressed female sexual function and childbirth. Additional variables studied include depression, mode of delivery, subjective birth experience and traumatic life events other than sexual abuse.
METHODS: data collection for the study was extended across three time periods: during the third trimester of pregnancy and approximately one and six months postpartum. Self-reported questionnaire responses of 300 women from two medical centres in Israel, as well as hospital records regardi

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that preventive counseling for women at high risk of perinatal depression leads to a reduction in the development of perinatal depression and is cost-effective. Barriers of cost, transit, time, and staffing limit accessibility of these services. We examined whether a theoretical, virtual, group, social worker (SW)-led Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) program for patients at high risk of perinatal depression would be cost-effective.

OBJECTIVE: To examine relations between maternal depression (in pure and comorbid forms) and mother-infant interactions, infant attachment, and toddler social-emotional problems and competencies. A second objective was to explore sex differences.
METHOD: Sixty-nine mother-infant dyads were followed from pregnancy to 30 months postpartum. Depression was measured at multiple times with self-report and interview assessments. Play was assessed at 4 months and attachment status at 14 months postpartum. At 30 months, mothers completed the Child Behavior Checklist and Infant-Toddler Social and Emoti

Unplanned, adverse events during labor or delivery may generate a negative response during the early postpartum period, resulting in disruption of usual functioning and mood. High levels of maternal depressive symptoms are associated with parenting, infant attachment, behavioral problems and cognition (Beck 2002). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of adverse events in labor or delivery and depressive symptoms, functional status and infant care at 2-weeks postpartum. The secondary aim was to explore the role of social support as a possible moderator in the relationship b

Major depression is a common, severe, chronic, and often life-threatening illness. There is a growing body of evidence that, far from being a disease with purely psychological manifestations, major depression is a systemic disease with deleterious effects on multiple organ systems. Stressful life events have a substantial causal association with depression, and there is now compelling evidence that even early life stress constitutes a major risk factor for the subsequent development of depression. This review will focus on the association between severity of depression and diachronic vulnerabi

OBJECTIVE: To assess the occurrence of perinatal depression and anxiety in women before and after diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS).
METHODS: A total of 114,629 pregnant women were included in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort study (1999-2008). We assessed depression and anxiety by questionnaires during and after pregnancy. Women with MS were identified from national health registries and hospital records and grouped into (1) MS diagnosed before pregnancy (n = 140) or MS diagnosed after pregnancy with (2) symptom onset before pregnancy (n = 98) or (3) symptom onset after pregn
