Fungal dermatitis was diagnosed in two captive gray seals (Halichoerus grypus) and four harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) between 1992 and 1994. Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Malassezia spp., and Yarrowia (Candida) lipolytica were isolated. Erythematous, thickened, alopecic skin lesions were present on the face and on the flippers, particularly around the nail bed. The two most important environmental factors associated with development of fungal dermatitis appeared to be excessive chlorination of pool water and warm water temperature.

Atopic dermatitis (AD), or atopic eczema, is the most common, chronic inflammatory disease among children in industrialized countries. We still lack knowledge of its pathophysiology and in particular the role of allergy as both an eliciting factor for disease expression and for disease activity. This article describes the clinical symptoms of the disease and its qualitatively different aspects. AD cannot be understood as being induced by one factor only, e.g. allergy, and this is important when planning treatment strategies. It is also important to realize the very wide range of disease intens…

Interstitial granulomatous dermatitis with arthritis is a rare dermatologic disorder seen in patients suffering from diseases in which circulating immune complexes occur. The typical cutaneous signs are linear cords usually located on the lateral aspect of the trunk. The characteristic, although not specific, histology reveals a dense diffuse infiltrate composed mostly of histiocytes, accompanied by neutrophils and eosinophils, and degenerated collagen surrounded by palisades of histiocytes. We discuss this disorder and its differential diagnosis.

Gold is a relatively common allergen that appears to induce dermatitis about the face and eyelids, as well as at sites of direct cutaneous contact. In this study, 355 patients with suspected contact dermatitis were evaluated; 17 (4.8%) were found to be allergic to gold. Fifteen of these 17 patients were re-evaluated at > 2 months after patch testing. When contact with gold jewelry was discontinued, 7 of 15 (46.7%) of the gold-allergic patients reported that their dermatitis cleared. In 3 of 7 patients (42.9%), discontinuing contact with gold jewelry was the only modification to their behavior;…

AIM: To determine aetiological factors in vulvar dermatitis.
BACKGROUND: Dermatitis of the vulva is a common clinical diagnosis in the specialized vulva clinic, although the exact prevalence is unknown. Aetiological factors are poorly understood in particular the incidence of atopy and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Other factors implicated are iron deficiency and exogenous causes such as contact irritants and allergens.
METHODS: During a 1-year period, 38 patients with an initial clinical diagnosis of vulvar dermatitis were questioned, examined and investigated with full blood count, serum ferriti…

Perioral dermatitis (POD) is a common dermatosis and is considered by most dermatologists to be increasing in incidence. An Australia-wide, questionnaire-based study investigating the aetiology of POD was conducted, with particular emphasis on the significance of cosmetic use. One hundred and thirty-three cases were obtained from dermatologists across Australia and were compared with 99 randomly selected controls who were matched for age and sex. Application of foundation, in addition to moisturizer and night cream resulted in a 13-fold increased risk for POD (odds ratio 13.5; P < 0.001). The …

The nucleoside analogue lamivudine (3TC) is commonly used in multidrug therapy of human immunodeficiency virus-1 disease because it not only potentiates the antiviral effects of other reverse transcriptase inhibitors, but it is also relatively nontoxic. We present a patient who developed a contact dermatitis to lamivudine after prolonged exposure.

We report on the clinical and histopathologic findings of four patients who had asymptomatic, erythematous to violaceous plaques symmetrically distributed on the upper aspect of the thighs, lateral chest, and in two cases also on the abdomen and flexor surface of the elbows. All of the patients were women; two of them had arthritis, which in one case was associated with an autoimmune disorder, and another had autoimmune thyroiditis. Histopathologically, all cases showed similar changes consisting of an interstitial granulomatous dermatitis involving mostly the lower reticular dermis. Histiocyt…

Contact dermatitis is a common condition that can be categorized as irritant dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. Although each of these conditions may have a similar presentation, allergic contact dermatitis is immunologically mediated, whereas irritant contact dermatitis is not. Contact dermatitis can be acute, subacute, or chronic, and each of these phases may progress into the next. Almost any substance may induce a cutaneous reaction, depending on its concentration, the duration of contact, and the condition of the contacted skin. It is estimated that there are more than 6 million …

The types of canine sterile nodular dermatitis discussed in this article have in common the clinical presentation of nodules or plaques; however, they differ in many aspects such as breed predilection, distribution and evolution of cutaneous lesions, systemic involvement, response to therapy, and prognosis. The definitive diagnosis should be based on multiple skin biopsy results. Other ancillary tests may be indicated in cases of systemic involvement. In addition, serum alpha1 antitrypsin can be measured to demonstrate the association between nodular panniculitis and serum alpha1 antitrypsin d…

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is a rare clinical condition associated with variable cutaneous and mucosal eruptions such as urticaria, erythema multiforme, and eczema. Exacerbation is influenced by hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle. The patient described in this report had recurrent cyclic lesions on the skin, oral mucosa, and lips that appeared just before regular menstruation and persisted until a few days after. During each cycle, the eruptions appeared at the previously affected sites, mimicking the clinical feature of a fixed drug eruption. This rare phenomenon is attributed to…
