Real-world comorbidities of atopic dermatitis in the US adult ambulatory population.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a pruritic, inflammatory skin disease associated with various comorbidities. However, comprehensive analyses of real-world comorbidities in adult patients with AD are limited. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the real-world comorbidities associated with adult AD in an ambulatory population. METHODS: We queried the MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters database from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to compare comorbidities in adult patients with AD versus age- and sex-matched controls. RESULTS: A tot

Atopic dermatitis and risk of autoimmune diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis is the most common chronic inflammatory skin disease and presents a major public health burden worldwide. Recent observational studies revealed the potential association between atopic dermatitis with autoimmune disorders. However, there is no meta-analysis of the prevalence or incidence of autoimmune diseases in atopic dermatitis. Therefore, considering the potential clinical implications of these associations, we aimed to assess the risk of autoimmune diseases in patients with atopic dermatitis using this method. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were

Early intervention of atopic dermatitis as a preventive strategy for progression of food allergy.

BACKGROUND: Atopic diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (AD) and food allergy (FA), have increased in prevalence in industrialized countries during the past few decades and pose a significant health burden. They appear to have a common underlying mechanism and a natural disease progression. AD is generally the first atopic disease to manifest followed by other atopic diseases, such as FA, allergic rhinitis, or allergic asthma suggesting that they are likely different manifestations of the same disease. BODY: Evidence suggests that allergic sensitization occurs through an impaired skin barrier,

Association between atopic dermatitis and hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found conflicting results about the association of atopic dermatitis (AD) with hypertension. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether AD and AD severity are associated with hypertension. METHODS: A systematic review was performed of published studies in Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and GREAT (Global Resource for EczemA Trials) databases. At least two reviewers conducted title/abstract, full-text review and data extraction. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS: Fifty-one studies met the inclusion criteria and 19

Association of Early Life Exposure to Antibiotics With Risk of Atopic Dermatitis in Sweden.

IMPORTANCE: Atopic dermatitis is associated with substantial morbidity in childhood. Further understanding of the underlying factors contributing to its onset is needed. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of exposure to antibiotics in the prenatal period and early childhood with risk of atopic dermatitis in a nationwide population in Sweden. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This Swedish nationwide, register-based, prospective cohort study used data on mother-child pairs from the Swedish Medical Birth Register linked to other national registers for information on health, socioeconomic, an

A Literature Review of Real-World Effectiveness and Safety of Dupilumab for Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with pruritus, characterized by recurrent eczema with exacerbations and remissions. AD impairs patients' QOL and places a heavy burden on patients. Recently, dupilumab, an anti-IL-4Rα antibody, was approved for the treatment of patients with moderate-to-severe AD who are refractory to topical agents and/or conventional systemic therapy. Clinical trials of dupilumab for AD demonstrated high efficacy and tolerable safety profiles. Furthermore, real-world evidence of dupilumab for AD is accumulating. Most of these data show favorable e

Prostaglandin D2 metabolite is not a useful clinical indicator for assessing atopic dermatitis.

Prostaglandin D2 (PGD2 ) plays an important role in atopic dermatitis (AD), and 11,15-dioxo-9α-hydroxy-2,3,4,5-tetranorprostan-1,20-dioicacid (PGDM) is a major metabolite of PGD2 . We investigated the relationship between urinary PGDM levels and severity of paediatric AD. In total, 31 patients with AD and 21 healthy controls (HCs) without AD were recruited, and urinary PGDM levels were measured. Of the 31 patients with AD, 14 were reassessed for urinary PGDM after topical steroid therapy. There was no difference in urinary PGDM levels between patients with AD and HCs. Although there was a sign

Role of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 in the development of atopic dermatitis.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) are potent anti-inflammatory drugs, the secretion of which is mediated and controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. However, they are also secreted de novo by peripheral tissues for local use. Several tissues express 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 1 (11β-HSD1), including the skin. The inactive GC cortisone is converted by 11β-HSD1 to active GC cortisol, which is responsible for delayed wound healing during a systemic excess of GC. However, the role of 11β-HSD1 in inflammation is unclear. We assessed whether 11β-HSD1 affects the development of atopic dermat

Prevalence and risk factors of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and urticaria in China.

By searching the database of CNKI, Wanfang and PubMed, the prevalence and risk factors of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and urticaria were relatively more investigated, which were the skin diseases of more concern in the current epidemiological study of skin diseases. Three national epidemiologic surveys reported that the prevalence of atopic dermatitis increased from 0.69% in 1998, to 3.07% in 2002, and 12.94% in 2014, respectively. The prevalence of psoriasis increased from 0.123% in 1984 to 0.47% in 2009 according to 2 national surveys. The prevalence of acne was 8.1% in a national in

Effectiveness of dupilumab for the treatment of nummular eczema phenotype of atopic dermatitis in adults.

Nummular eczema (NE) is currently considered as one of the clinical phenotypes of atopic dermatitis (AD) of the adult. In this multicentre study, 30 adult patients (age ≥ 18 years) affected with nummular-like AD were treated with dupilumab, a monoclonal antibody against the receptor for interleukin(IL)-4 and IL-13. The evaluation of the results after 16 weeks of treatment showed a significant improvement of the disease, as demonstrated by reduction in Eczema Area Severity Score (EASI), visual analogue score (VAS) of pruritus, and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores. Conjunctivitis in

IgE sensitivity to Malassezia pachydermatis and mite allergens in dogs with atopic dermatitis.

In this study, dogs with atopic dermatitis were separated into non-food-induced atopic dermatitis (NFIAD) group (n = 15) and food-induced atopic dermatitis (FIAD) group (n = 37) based on an elimination diet test. IgE reactivity for crude Malassezia pachydermatis (M. pachydermatis) and house dust mites (HDM) allergen extracts was investigated in the two groups using fluorometric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and intradermal skin test (IDST). Nine (60%) of the 15 dogs in NFIAD group and 6 (16%) of the 37 dogs in FIAD group showed specific IgE for M. pachydermatis (Mann-Whitney U-test

Association of Adverse Childhood Experiences With Childhood Atopic Dermatitis in the United States.

Traumatic and stressful events of childhood, known as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), have been associated with numerous health outcomes. However, little is known about ACEs in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients. We sought to determine the relationship between ACEs and childhood AD. Data were analyzed from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal birth cohort study that followed 4898 women and their children born in large US cities. Multivariable weighted logistic regression models adjusting for sociodemographics were constructed to determine the associations of ACEs w

Demographics and Baseline Disease Characteristics of Early Responders to Crisaborole for Atopic Dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Crisaborole ointment, 2%, is a nonsteroidal phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor for the treatment of mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis (AD). This post hoc, pooled analysis identified demographic characteristics associated with early response to crisaborole. METHODS: Early response was defined as day 8 Investigator’s Static Global Assessment (ISGA) success (clear [0] or almost clear [1] with ≥2-grade improvement), ISGA clear/almost clear, or Severity of Pruritus Scale (SPS) response (≥1-point improvement). Correlations between early response and day-29 response were calcul
