Contact dermatitis and other skin conditions in instrumental musicians.

BACKGROUND: The skin is important in the positioning and playing of a musical instrument. During practicing and performing there is a permanent more or less intense contact between the instrument and the musician's skin. Apart from aggravation of predisposed skin diseases (e.g., atopic eczema or psoriasis) due to music-making, specific dermatologic conditions may develop that are directly caused by playing a musical instrument. METHODS: To perform a systematic review on instrument-related skin diseases in musicians we searched the PubMed database without time limits. Furthermore we studied th

Allergic contact dermatitis in children: which factors are relevant? (review of the literature).

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in children is increasing. Sensitization to contact allergens can start in early infancy. The epidermal barrier is crucial for the development of sensitization and elicitation of ACD. Factors that may influence the onset of sensitization in children are atopic dermatitis, skin barrier defects and intense or repetitive contact with allergens. Topical treatment of ACD is associated with cutaneous sensitization, although the prevalence is not high. ACD because of haptens in shoes or shin guards should be considered in cases of persistent foot eruptions or sharply

Occupational contact allergy in nurses: results from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology 2003-2012.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers are occupationally exposed to various allergens in protective gloves, surface or instrument disinfectants, drugs, and skin care products. An increased prevalence of sensitization to thiurams, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde and glyoxal in nurses with occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) has been known since the 1990s. OBJECTIVES: To update the range of occupational allergens in healthcare professionals. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed patch test data from the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK), 2003-2012. Patch test results from 2248 nu

The 10-year experience of an academically affiliated occupational and environmental medicine clinic.

Occupational and environmental diseases are underrecognized. Among the barriers to the successful diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of these conditions are inadequate consultative and information resources. We describe the 10-year clinical and training experiences of an academically affiliated referral center that has as its primary goal the identification of work-related and other environmental diseases. The University of Washington Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program has evaluated 6,048 patients in its diagnostic and screening clinics. Among the 2,841 seen in the diagnostic cl

[The effect of antibiotics on the body of those working in their manufacture].

541 workers with long-term history of occupational contact with antibiotics and chemicals were examined by a dermatologist, ENT specialist, neuropathologist, surgeon, ophthalmologist. Many workers complained of occasional skin eruption, rhinitis, skin itching, sneezing, cough, Quincke's edema. Allergic examination revealed the presence of allergic symptoms (allergic dermatitis, itch, vasomotor rhinitis, chronic eczema, obstructive bronchitis, bronchial asthma, Quincke's edema, acute and chronic conjunctivitis) in 98 examinees. Somatic affections are represented by hypertension, chronic hepatit

Skin protection programmes.

Educational programmes, including evidence-based recommendations on skin protection (skin protection programmes), have been proposed for the prevention of irritant contact dermatitis in occupations with a high frequency of this disease. Recent intervention studies directed at wet-work employees showed a positive influence on wet-work behaviour and on clinical skin symptoms. The structure and implementation of skin protection programmes are discussed.

[How do I treat dyshidrosiform eruptions?].

In view of the dermatologic practice, we suggest to differentiate between dry (basic form: dyshidrosis lamellosa sicca) and wet types of dyshidrotic eruptions (with vesicles and erosions). Dry forms are preferably topically treated with urea-preparations without glucocorticoids, therapy of wet forms depends on the etiology and comprises glucocorticoids, antibiotics, and antimycotics topically and systematically applied, as well as skin protection and antiseptic and astringent baths. Artificial inflictions of dyshidrotic skin lesions by the patient himself are of great importance.

Fiberglass vs mineral wool (rockwool) dermatitis.

Fiberglass and rockwool dermatitis is usually due to a mechanical irritant reaction. When several members of a family are affected, scabies is often initially suspected. The irritant dermatitis may be complicated by an urticarial and an eczematous reaction which may mimic an allergic reaction clinically and histologically. Allergic reactions to added epoxy or formaldehyde resins may very rarely occur.

[Manicurists and pedicurists - occupation group at high risk of work-related dermatoses].

In recent years occupational skin and respiratory diseases have been more and more frequently diagnosed in small production and service enterprises. The awareness of occupational exposure and its possible health effects among their workers and employers is not sufficient. Beauty salons, in addition to hairdressers and beauticians, frequently employ manicurists and pedicurists. The workers often happen to perform various activities interchangeably. the health status of beauty salons workers has rarely been assessed. The most numerous reports concern hairdressers. In this occupational group, the
