Malnutrition and clinical outcomes post alloSCT.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition has been linked with higher risk of poor outcomes post-allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT); however, few studies have used a validated nutrition assessment tool such as the Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment (i.e., PG-SGA) to measure nutritional status and investigate associations with long-term clinical outcomes. The present study aimed to assess the incidence of malnutrition prior to alloSCT and determine whether there was an association between nutritional status pre-transplant and post-transplant clinical outcomes including acute kidney injur

A dietitian-led coeliac service helps to identify and reduce involuntary gluten ingestion with subsequent reduction in the frequency of repeat endoscopies.

BACKGROUND: Dietitian-led coeliac clinics have the potential to be a cost-effective way of monitoring patients living with coeliac disease (CD). The aim of this service evaluation was to explore the impact of a dietitian-led coeliac clinic on gluten-free diet (GFD) adherence and the frequency of endoscopies with repeat duodenal biopsies. METHODS: Adults with biopsy-proven CD were transferred to a new dietitian-led coeliac clinic where data were collected from medical records and analysed using SPSS. GFD adherence was assessed by a specialist dietitian, specialist nurse, consultant gastroenter

The affordability and obtainability of gluten-free foods for adults with coeliac disease following their withdrawal on prescription in England: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Changes to prescribing policies in England have restricted or stopped access to gluten-free food on prescription for people with coeliac disease in some geographical areas. The present study aimed to explore the impact of these changes on the affordability and obtainability of gluten-free foods for adults with coeliac disease. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews (n = 24) were conducted with people with coeliac disease living in areas where prescriptions for gluten-free foods were no longer available, were restricted or followed national guidelines. Interviews explored

The effect of phone and video counselling given to participants living with obesity on weight loss and quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although remote dietary counselling practices have increased in the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not known which method is more effective. This study aimed to determine the effect of diet counselling by phone or video on weight loss and to compare it with the traditional follow-up method. METHODS: Forty-six participants living with obesity were randomised into the phone counselling (n = 15), video counselling (n = 15), and traditional follow-up groups (n = 16), and were followed for 10 weeks. The anthropometric measurements, quality-of-life questionnaire (SF-36) scores and total calor

Nudging food choice in a prison setting: an investigation using food choice data.

BACKGROUND: The prison population presents complex health needs and is disproportionately affected by poor health, compared to the general population. Diet has a clear role in prisoner health, and the prison food environment within which food choices are made is relatively under-researched. The aim of this study was to examine whether food choices in a women's prison changed after the introduction of a new menu design by the catering team. METHODS: The adjusted menu design incorporated an emoticon (a smiley face) placed next to designated 'Healthy Choice' foods on the menu sheets, which were

The complementary feeding practices of low-income Black mothers with infants between 6 and 24 months of age: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The period from 6 to 24 months in an infant's life presents a critical window for understanding feeding practices and for designing culturally appropriate interventions. However, little is known about the complementary feeding practices of Black mothers and how this period can be used to optimise the long-term health of their children. The present study aimed to identify factors that influence the complementary feeding practices of low-income Black mothers with children aged 6-24 months. METHODS: Participants were recruited through Research Match, Facebook advertising, flyers, and

Psychological interventions aiming for changing dietary habits in patients with cardiovascular disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diet is a critical component of healthy lifestyle, especially in cardiac rehabilitation. Psychological interventions, as well as mix-treatment interventions, such as psychological components, appear promising approaches in the adoption and maintenance of a healthy diet in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given the variety of clinical intervention programmes available, we aimed to determine whether psychological interventions and interventions that incorporate psychological components provide better lifestyle outcomes than traditional care, specifically targeting dietary

Adding mini meals to a nasogastric refeeding protocol for patients with eating disorders can be achieved on general hospital wards.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of medically compromised patients with eating disorders is difficult in general hospital wards. There is currently no consensus on the best feeding method; however, previous research has demonstrated the safety of using enteral feeding. Because an oral diet has benefits on psychological and behavioural pathways, concurrent feeding requires further investigation. The present study aimed to examine acceptability and safety of implementing mini meals to a previously nil-by-mouth 7-day enteral feeding protocol. METHODS: This was mixed methods research including a retrospecti

Nutritional risk predicts postoperative complications and length of stay, whereas sarcopenia risk predicts need for step-down care in a mixed elective surgery population.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and poor functional reserves place patients at risk for negative surgical outcomes. In this prospective study we aimed to measure preoperative nutritional and sarcopenia risk and evaluate their impact on postoperative outcomes. METHODS: Adults scheduled to undergo elective general and gastrointestinal surgery were screened for nutrition risk using the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool screening tool. Sarcopenia risk was measured using the SARC-F tool and hand-grip strength. Patients were followed postoperatively. Incidence of complications, length of stay (LOS), r

Nutrition impact symptoms and the risk of malnutrition in people with Parkinson's disease: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: People with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience symptoms that affect their ability to eat. This may contribute to weight loss and increased risk of malnutrition. The present study aimed to quantify the extent of nutrition impact symptoms (NIS) in the population and a scoring system of NIS was incorporated in the tool used to identify malnutrition. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, members of the Norwegian Parkinson's Association, with any PD diagnosis and stage of illness, were invited to respond to an online 24-item questionnaire. Questions from two validated question

A Mediterranean and low-fat dietary intervention in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients: Exploring participant experience and perceptions about dietary change.

BACKGROUND: A Mediterranean diet (MD) appears to be beneficial in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients in Mediterranean countries; however, the acceptability of a MD in non-Mediterranean populations has not been thoroughly explored. The present study aimed to explore the acceptability through understanding the barriers and enablers of the MD and low-fat diet (LFD) interventions as perceived by participating Australian adults from multicultural backgrounds with NAFLD. METHODS: Semi-structured telephone interviews were performed with 23 NAFLD trial participants at the end of a 12-

Efficacy and safety of carbohydrate counting versus other forms of dietary advice in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent chronic noncommunicable diseases globally, and the only way to reduce its complications is good glycaemic control. Insulin remains the only approved treatment for type 1 DM (T1DM) and is used by many with type 2 DM (T2DM). Carbohydrate counting is considered the ideal way to calculate meal-related insulin doses as it allows greater flexibility in diet and could, in some people, reduce the burden of the disease. The primary objective of this systematic review was to assess carbohydrate counting efficacy in reducing glycate

Serum vitamin D and cardiometabolic risk factors in the UK population.

We analysed data on 2842 subjects aged ≥40 years enrolled in the National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS 2008-2019). Based on serum 25(OH)D concentrations, study subjects were grouped in three categories: vitamin D deficiency (<25 nmol/L), vitamin D insufficiency (25-49 nmol/L) and vitamin D sufficiency status (≥50 nmol/L). Differences in CVD risk factors between vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency and vitamin D sufficiency status were expressed in standard deviation scores (SDS) and estimated through weighted multiple linear regression models.

Measurement of mid-arm circumference as a starting point for nutritional assessment of patients with decompensated cirrhosis: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The mid-arm circumference (MAC) is an accessible, quick, and inexpensive measurement, which can be performed at the bedside only with a measuring tape. In this sense, the present study aims to suggest MAC cut-off values to assess the nutritional status and its association with mortality of hospitalised patients with decompensated cirrhosis. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed with decompensated cirrhotic patients. Nutritional status was assessed by MAC and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA). Considering the SGA as the reference standard and based on receiver operatin
