Among 462 barium meals performed in rural Tanzanians in 1973-1974 121 pathological lesions were diagnosed. The principal were peptic ulcer in 59 patients, duodenitis in 20, serious gastritis in 10, carcinoma of the stomach in nine and of the oesophagus in seven. Peptic ulcer was most prevalent in young adults. The frequency of duodenitis was associated with invasion by parasitic worms. The social factors in the prevalence of peptic ulcer are discussed. Gastroptosis was a very common finding in patients with stomach complaints.

A series of 27 cases of biliary-digestive fistulae is presented. 26 were due to calculi and 1 to ulcer and calculi. 20 led to the duodenum, 6 to the colon, and 1 to the stomach from the gallbladder. The series constituted 1.4% of bile ducts operations. Females (mostly multiparae) formed 66%. The mean age was 64 yr. Direct fistulae (66%) had the appearance of surgical openings, whereas the indirect forms (34%) included a fistulous connection between the mucosae of the two organs. In chronic experiments (up to 2 years) on dogs on atherogenic diets the motor activity of the gastrointestinal tract, cholesterol, the phospholipid level in the blood and in the intestinal secretion as well as the morphology of the small intestine and the vascular system were examined. At the early stages of atherosclerosis (up to 4 months) the rise of the blood cholesterol level was followed by an increase in the periods of the activity of the gastrointestinal tract, a rise of cholesterol discharge by the small intestine, and the development of the hypertrophic process in the mucous membrane.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of cropectomy on the total amount and calcium content of ingesta in the digestive tract of the laying hen at night, as well as to determine if any abnormal physiological changes had occurred in the cropectomized hens. Of 300 female patients seen in a Venereal Diseases clinic, 84 (28-0 per cent) were found to be harbouring Candida albicans or C. parapsilosis in the genital tract and 33 per cent of these patients had clinical signs of vulvovaginitis. Of the 84 patients, 71-4 per cent harboured yeasts in the ano-rectal tract; of the remaining 216 patients, 25-9 per cent harboured yeasts in the ano-rectal tract. There was no evidence to suggest that the incidence of yeasts in the mouth, ano-rectal or genital tracts changed with age or use of oral contraception.

The paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) is one of the most primitive and unique freshwater fishes of North America. It is adapted as a plankton filter-feeder. The wide mouth and greatly expansible pharyngeal cavity allows it to process a large quantity of water. Numerous setiform gillrakers, which operate against the flattened surfaces of the gill arches and opercula, are capable of filtering out small food particles.
