Psychoanalysis of COVID-19 Patient Narratives: A Descriptive Study.

Background and Objectives: COVID-19 patients are a psychologically vulnerable patient group who suffer from both physical symptoms and psychological problems. The present study is a psychoanalytic investigation of COVID-19 patients utilizing Lacan's desire theory. We aimed to explore the manner in which patients' desire is presented in their lived experience narratives and sought to discover factors which directly impacted on this process. Materials and Methods: In-depth semi-structural interviews were conducted with 36 COVID-19 patients in China. During each interview, participants narrated t

Long-term functional, subjective and psychological results after single digit replantation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyse the long-term functional, subjective, and psychological results after single-digit replantation. METHODS: Thirty cases of digital replantation (14 thumbs, 12 index fingers, 2 middle fingers, 1 ring finger, and 1 little finger) in 30 patients (7 females and 23 males) with a mean age of 44.2 years (20-65 years) were evaluated at the end of a mean follow-up time of 36 months (19-50 months). The active range of motion of joints, grip and pinch strength, cutaneous sensibility, upper-extremity functioning, and subjective satisfaction were determined u

Establishing morphine and U-50,488H as discriminative stimuli in a three-choice assay with pigeons.

Pigeons were trained in a 3-choice assay to discriminate among injections of 5.6 mg/kg U-50,488H, 5.6 mg/kg morphine, and vehicle solution. In dose-response tests, subjects rarely responded on the U-50,488H-appropriate key when morphine was administered or on the morphine-appropriate key when they received U-50,488H. A high dose of naltrexone (1.0 mg/kg) completely blocked the morphine cue but failed to block completely the U-50,488H cue. In generalization tests, d-amphetamine primarily engendered saline-appropriate responding. Ethylketazocine produced mixed results, in that moderate doses pro

Inhibitory effects of SA4503 on the rewarding effects of abused drugs.

Previous findings have shown that sigma-1 receptors (Sig-1Rs) are upregulated by the self-administration of methamphetamine, whereas Sig-1R antisense can attenuate the behavioral effects of psychostimulants in rodents. Sig-1R is an endoplasmic reticulum chaperone protein. However, the effects of Sig-1R agonist on the rewarding effects of abused drugs are not fully understood. Therefore, we examined the effects of selective Sig-1R agonists, such as SA4503 and (+)-pentazocine, on the rewarding effects of abused drugs such as methamphetamine, cocaine and morphine in rats, as measured by the condi

Residual cognitive impairments in remitted depressed patients.

Depressive disorders are associated with various cognitive impairments. Studies on whether or not these impairments persist into the euthymic phase have shown conflicting results, due to differences in test versions and in study samples. In this paper, we aimed to compare the cognitive performance of remitted depressed patients with that of age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers across a wide range of cognitive domains. In two studies, we found few differences on neutral as well as emotional information processing tests. The findings indicate that remitted depressed patients who use antide

"This isn't a fairy tale we're talking about; this is our real lives": Community-orientated responses to address trans and gender diverse homelessness.

Globally, trans and gender diverse people contend with day-to-day exclusion, discrimination, and marginalisation, often culminating in experiences of poverty and homelessness. In this discussion article, we outline a bricolage research orientation rooted in liberation and Indigenous approaches brought into dialogue with the broader cannon of community psychology for meaningful research with homeless trans and gender diverse people. Such an approach transcends rigid disciplinary divides and shapes a framework for collaborative action, advocacy, and social change. We argue that scholar-activism,

Predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms after musculoskeletal trauma.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are common following musculoskeletal trauma and are associated with poorer recovery, disability, and reduced quality of life. Although psychosocial and injury-related factors have been linked to PTSS, limited research has examined longitudinal predictors or the relationship between injury severity and PTSS progression in people hospitalised for musculoskeletal trauma. OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of PTSS at three and six months following musculoskeletal trauma and hospitalisation, and to examine the relationship between injury severity a

Anxiety and depression in irritable bowel syndrome: Exploring the interaction with other symptoms and pathophysiology using multivariate analyses.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety or depression, in other words, psychological distress, are common comorbidities in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but their interaction with pathophysiological factors and other symptoms are unclear. METHODS: Patients with IBS (Rome III criteria), thoroughly characterized regarding pathophysiology (colonic transit time, visceral sensitivity, and autonomic nervous system [ANS] function), symptom profile (IBS severity, somatic symptoms, gastrointestinal [GI]-specific anxiety and fatigue), and quality of life, were explored for differences regarding pathophysio

Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS-SR) in a Norwegian material of patients with functional dyspepsia, duodenal ulcer, and urinary bladder dysfunction. Clinical validation of the instrument.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing interest in the psychosocial impact of a disease, but few instruments available to measure it. METHODS: The internal consistency and construct validity of the Norwegian translation of the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS-SR) was examined in a total of 557 patients. RESULTS: The seven dimensions of the psychosocial adjustment to medical illness from the original test were represented in the Norwegian translation. Psychologic distress, social environment, and vocational environment explained most of the variance. The instrument had high internal

Personality variables involved in chronic prostatitis.

Psychologic factors have been considered to play an important role in the etiology of chronic prostatitis. Earlier studies are often based on a psychoanalytical perspective and seldomly used quantitative approaches. In the present study quantitative tests are used to investigate personality variables which are suggested in the literature as underlying chronic prostatitis. A group of 50 chronic prostatitis patients was compared with a group of 50 patients seen for a vasectomy. Psychologic measures were taken by means of a personality inventory (NVM, Dutch short form of the MMPI), a symptom chec

Patterns of alcohol consumption and related problems in the general population of Greece.

This paper focuses on patterns of alcohol consumption and related problems, based on a nation-wide home survey sample of 4290 respondents aged 12-64 years. The prevalence of lifetime, past year and past month alcohol use, as well as levels of quantity of alcohol consumed and the reported alcohol-related problems, are presented. Frequency and quantity of consumption increases as age increases. Males were found to drink alcohol more frequently and in higher quantities than females. A higher proportion of young adults reported alcohol-related problems, in comparison to the other age groups. Regio

In Patients Undergoing Cochlear Implantation, Psychological Burden Affects Tinnitus and the Overall Outcome of Auditory Rehabilitation.

Cochlear implantation (CI) is increasingly being used in the auditory rehabilitation of deaf patients. Here, we investigated whether the auditory rehabilitation can be influenced by the psychological burden caused by mental conditions. Our sample included 47 patients who underwent implantation. All patients were monitored before and 6 months after CI. Auditory performance was assessed using the Oldenburg Inventory (OI) and Freiburg monosyllable (FB MS) speech discrimination test. The health-related quality of life was measured with Nijmegen Cochlear implantation Questionnaire (NCIQ) whereas ti

Visual trajectory pattern as prognostic factors for neck pain.

BACKGROUND: A novel approach capturing both temporal variation and pain intensity of neck pain is by visual trajectory patterns. Recently, both previous and expected visual trajectory patterns were identified as stronger predictors of outcome than traditional measures of pain history and psychological distress. Our aim was to examine patient characteristics within the various previous and expected patterns, relationship between the two patterns and predictive value of a variable combining the previous and expected patterns. METHODS: Patients with neck pain (n = 932) consulting chiropractors w

[Employment after the first myocardial infarct and rehabilitation].

Which are the determinants of return to work in middle aged myocardial infarction patients? This question was analysed by means of a follow-up study on men between 1986 and 1992 (group 1: n = 64, age = 46.6 (+/- 5.4), 5-6 years follow-up; group 2: n = 36, age = 51.2 (+/- 7.5), 2 years follow up), all of whom underwent a cardiac rehabilitation program in our hospital. Our aim was to determine the predictive power of social and psychological as compared to cardiologic factors. These factors were operating under two relevant conditions: 1. relative social homogeneity of the samples; 2. rehabilita

Predicting the risk of subsequent suicide among multiple myeloma patients in US: A population-based cohort study.

Suicide risk is higher in patients with multiple myeloma (MM) than in the general population. We used LASSO and Cox regression to identify factors associated with suicide in MM and to build a predictive nomogram. Sex, race, marital status, radiotherapy, year of diagnosis, and Rural-Urban Continuum Codes were independent predictors. Female sex, Black race, receipt of radiotherapy, more recent diagnosis (2010-2014, 2015-2020), and living in a metropolitan area were associated with lower suicide risk, whereas being single increased risk. Model performance was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier curves,

Understanding stigma and mental health among the transgender sex workers: A phenomenological inquiry.

The present study employs a qualitative method to explore how stigma and discrimination shape the psychological health of transgender sex workers (m to f) who have faced heightened vulnerability in a heteronormative society. Drawing on 16 in-depth interviews conducted in India through purposive sampling, the study reveals that participants navigate dual forms of stigma which includes stigma attached to gender identity and stigma associated with sex work reflecting a layered form of marginalization. These intersecting stigmas contribute to persistent mental distress, manifesting through self-ha
