Triplication of the gallbladder is a very rare congenital anomaly of the biliary tract; there are only eleven reported cases to date. Gallbladder multiplications are not likely to be discovered unless associated with cholelithiasis, sludge, cholecystitis and carcinoma. Here we report an incidentally diagnosed triplicate gallbladder in a patient with sigmoid diverticulitis; two of the triplicate gallbladder were demonstrated with ultrasound and computed tomography, and an additional galballder was found at surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the sonographic appearance of air in the mesentery of the small bowel.
METHODS: Sonography was performed with convex and linear array transducers in 2 patients with acute abdomen.
RESULTS: In 1 patient, sonography revealed fluid and air in the peritoneal cavity. A thick-walled small-bowel loop with a thick echogenic mesentery was seen. Air was seen in the mesentery as linear bright echoes with acoustic shadowing. An uncomplicated diverticulum was seen. In the second patient, air was seen in the thick and echogenic mesentery of a thick-walled small bowel. An inflamed di

PURPOSE: The feasibility of laparoscopic colectomy for colon surgery has now been well established. Most of the studies on laparoscopic colectomies include all types of colonic pathologies without discrimination. Our goal was to compare laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy open sigmoid colectomy for simple sigmoid diverticular disease, to assess whether it can be done safely and whether the proposed advantages could be realized.
METHODS: We evaluated the differences in outcomes of 66 laparoscopic sigmoid colectomy patients and 88 open sigmoid colectomy patients. We report a five-year outcomes analy

Interventional techniques in treatment of complicated diverticulitis gain more and more importance. In particular abscesses and bleeding are treated successfully. In case of diverticular abscess (Hinchey classification stage I and II) percutaneous drainages are placed sonographically or CT guided. Interventional drainage offers the possibility of elective one-stage surgical treatment of diverticulitis with significant reduce of mortality and morbidity rates. Diverticular bleeding is usually diagnosed and treated endoscopically. Only if endoscopy is not able to manage bleeding, angiography or n

The authors consider some nosographic aspects of diverticular disease, and refer the personal experience on the treatment of 36 patients with diverticulitis. Beside surgery, that is indicated when complications occur (perforation, abscess, fistulae, occlusion), medical therapy (diet + drugs) could reduce the symptomatology and the risk or progression of complications. The authors present data on the clinical use of rifaximin in the treatment of acute diverticulitis.

Diagnosis of perforation of a solitary diverticulum of transverse colon followed the discovery at operation of an abdominal mass, ultrasound and CT scan imaging demonstrating a heterogeneous mass of enhanced density provoking apparent extrinsic compression of colon. A literature review showed the rarity of this complication, only 22 cases being reported but associated almost constantly with a pseudo-tumoral abscess centered on the diverticulum. This was the case in the patient reported but current imaging methods (ultrasound and particularly CT scanning) allowed correct evaluation of the natur

During a 4-year period, eight patients 40 years old or younger had surgically proved diverticulitis at our institution. None of these patients had connective-tissue diseases or were on medication (i.e., steroids) that would predispose them to diverticulosis. The presenting clinical symptoms in this group of patients were often misleading, and in only one of the eight cases was the correct clinical diagnosis made at the time of admission. Of the three diagnostic studies that were performed (barium enema, sonography, and CT), barium enema was the most accurate, yielding evidence for diverticulit

A fatal case of pseudomembranous enterocolitis following oral and parenteral clindamycin therapy is presented. Interesting features in this case are involvement of the small bowel and complete sparing of the large bowel distal to a defunctioning transverse colostomy. The significance of the absence of disease in the defunctioned bowel is discussed in terms of aetiology and diagnosis of pseudomembranous enterocolitis.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: It is still difficult to visualize changes in the small intestine. Wireless capsule enteroscopy is a new method that promises to provide new insights into the small intestine. In a prospective study, the diagnostic yield of wireless enteroscopy was therefore compared with computed tomography (CT) enteroclysis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients with suspected small-bowel pathology underwent CT enteroclysis and wireless capsule enteroscopy examinations, conducted by two independent blinded investigators. The results of the two investigations (diagnoses and the

BACKGROUND: Colovesical fistulas are uncommon but associated with significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. In cases with diverticular etiology, surgical management involves single-stage colonic resection with anastomosis and simple or no bladder repair. No single approach to postoperative bladder management has been widely accepted. Although historically a Foley catheter remained in place for about 2 weeks, elevated risk of the attendant complications has motivated exploring shorter durations. This study examined the feasibility and safety of removing the Foley catheter on postoperat

Diverticular disease is a common clinical condition among Western populations, which increases with age. It can present in a variety of manners and has myriad of potential disease complications. We present a rare case of an adult patient with an extraperitoneal complications of a diverticular perforation presenting with facial swelling due to a colo-urachal fistula associated with a patent urachal remnant. Perforation should be considered in patients presenting with surgical emphysema with background of diverticular disease.

BACKGROUND: Primer epiploic appendagitis (PEA) is an uncommon condition.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records and computed tomography (CT) findings of 45 patients with PEA.
RESULTS: On the basis of physical examination and pain localization, presumptive clinical diagnosis was acute appendicitis (n=13), acute cholecystitis (n=2), acute diverticulitis (n=19), renal colic (n=7) and ovarian pathology (n=4).
CONCLUSION: Although it has no characteristic clinical and laboratory features, CT is the best modality for accurate diagnosis of PEA.

We present a prospective and protocolizeted study of 98 patients over 65 years, underwent emergency surgery for perforated acute abdomen in the Hospital Nacional de Clínicas during the period from April/2007 to April/2013. The purpose was to determine the morbidity and mortality of this entity in the elderly. Mainly affected were women between 65 and 75 years. The leading cause of intervention was the colonic involvement, in its entirety. Septic complications and renal failure are the disorders that prevailed. Practical application of Mannheim peritonitis index. The perforated acute abdomen is

Diverticular disease is a common problem in the western population and sometimes leads to serious complications such as hemorrhage, bowel stenosis, obstruction, abscesses, fistulae, bowel perforation, and peritonitis. The severity of these complications can differ, and it is not always clear which procedure is indicated in each case and what measures should be followed before bringing the patient into the operating room. Certain operations have high rates of morbidity and mortality, especially in compromised patients. Along with advancements in imaging and minimally invasive techniques, the in

PURPOSE: This case report of Tourette syndrome with intellectual disability as a comorbid condition may help us learn more about neuropsychiatric disorders as a comorbid condition. Increased knowledge and a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease may help with the management of it.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report on a 12-year-old male patient with motor and vocal tics that have been present since the age of 1 and have worsened over time - this is typical for patients with comorbid intellectual disability and behavioral impairment. An MRI of the head showed decreased hippocampal
