Saffron, the dried red stigmas of Crocus sativus L., is considered as one of the most expensive spices worldwide, and as such, it is prone to adulteration. This study introduces an NMR-based approach to identify and determine the adulteration of saffron with Sudan I-IV dyes. The characterization of impurities present in vertilmicin by liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) is described. A reversed phase (RP)-LC method using a C18 column resistant to basic pH with an alkaline (pH 11) aqueous mobile phase was developed and coupled to MS with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source in the positive ion mode which provides MS(n) capability. In total, 18 impurities were detected in a commercial sample. Eleven impurities described in this work were newly identified.

In May 2001, The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene was informed of a cluster of 4 patients treated at an outpatient gastroenterology center who developed acute hepatitis C virus infection. An investigation identified a total of 12 clinic-associated hepatitis C virus transmissions and the outbreak and was traced to unsafe handling of multidose anesthetic vials and possible re-use of contaminated needles. This report typifies the types of outbreaks that continue to occur despite safe injection guidelines.

OBJECTIVES: To detect genes conferring resistance to biguanides, quaternary ammonium compounds, beta-lactams and fluoroquinolones in clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and to demonstrate whether reduced susceptibility is spread clonally and if the presence of any of the detected genes links to a specific epidemic MRSA. OBJECTIVE: To determine the contents of the residual solvents, methanol, ethanol, toluene, dichloromethane and dioxane in ranolazine raw material.
METHODS: Headspace gas chromatography was used to analyze the residual solvents quantitatively. Samples were analyzed on an HP-INNOWAX column with column temperature at 45 degrees Celsius; using water as solvent.
RESULTS: Five residual solvents were completely separated. The liner range and recoveries were satisfied. RSD of precision and accuracy was less than 8% with average recoveries between 87.1% and 105.6%.

A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed for the determination of oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) residues in bovine and porcine muscles. The method involved the homogenization of the sample in EDTA-McIlvaine buffer with added n-hexane and dichloromethane, centrifugation, precipitation of the supernatant using trichloroacetic acid and filtration. Methyl mercury was determined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 220 samples of canned tuna collected in 1991. Samples were chosen to represent different styles, colors, and packs as available. Emphasis was placed on water-packed tuna, small can size, and the highest-volume brand names.
