BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that varus alignment of the elbow has been associated with lateral condyle fractures. However, for other pediatric and adolescent elbow pathologies, the influence of upper extremity alignment has not been investigated. This study aimed to compare elbow alignment (quantified using Baumann's angle) among patients with medial epicondyle humeral fractures and capitellum osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and age- and sex-matched control patients.
METHODS: Pediatric and adolescent patients (ages: 5-18 years, inclusive) treated at a tertiary care hospital

INTRODUCTION: The optimal treatment of terrible triad injuries of the elbow (TTI) remains topic of ongoing discussion. The aim of this study was to determine whether different treatment strategies for coronoid tip fractures in terrible triad injuries influences the clinical and radiological results in a mid-term follow-up.
METHODS: A total of 62 patients with surgical treatment of a TTI including a coronoid tip fracture (37 women, 25 men; mean age, 51 years) were available for follow-up assessment after an average of 4.2 years (range 24-110 months). Thirteen patients had O'Driscoll 1.1 and 49

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate a new radiographic view of the elbow joint in dogs that would potentially enhance observation of the medial coronoid process (MCP).
SAMPLE POPULATION: 20 cadaver limbs from 10 dogs and clinical examination of 100 elbow joints of 53 dogs.
PROCEDURE: Twenty elbow joints from 10 cadavers were imaged by use of mediolateral, flexed mediolateral, craniocaudal, craniolateral-caudomedial oblique (Cr15L-CdMO), and distomedial-proximolateral oblique (Di35M-PrLO) radiographic views before and after placement of 3 lead pellets placed on the cranial, medial, and cranio

Fractures in Children need physio-and ergotherapy as much as fractures in adults. Before the seventh year monitoring is of prime importance, because malpositioning of fractures is frequent. In children between 7 and 12 years of age physio- and ergotherapy are essential factors in rehabilitation. Massage and irradiation are noxious. Passive exercise of the elbow joint is not successful but causes new injuries. Fractures of the vertebral column or injuries of the spinal cord should receive only functional treatment. Later consequences cannot be assessed until growth has ceased.

A 20-year-old male presented to our OPD with stiffness in his right elbow. He gave a history of sustaining a fracture around the same elbow when he was 4 years old. He was treated operatively for the same. In the post-operative period, he did not undergo any physiotherapy. On examination, he had a fixed flexion deformity in his right elbow with a range of motion between 90 and 110 degrees. X-ray did not show any bony abnormalities and MRI revealed susceptibility artifacts in posterior aspect. The elbow was approached anteriorly releasing all the soft tissue contractures. The elbow was immobili

Biodegradable pins are increasingly used in the treatment of lateral condylar fractures of the humerus (LCFH) in children, but the strength of the biodegradable pin is weaker than that of K-wire. However, to enhance the stability of LCFH fixed by biodegradable pins, absorbable tension band wiring is often combined with the application, yet high-quality comparative evidence verifying the clinical value of this auxiliary reinforcement remains lacking. This study aimed to compare and analyze whether auxiliary absorbable tension band wiring has clinical significance for Weiss type III LCFH and to

The use of bioabsorbable pins with prolonged degradation periods for fracture fixation has raised concerns about adverse soft tissue reactions, including seromas, discharging sinuses, or osteolytic changes. We asked whether bioabsorbable pins of self-reinforced polylactic acid polymer used in radial head fractures resulted in such reactions. We retrospectively reviewed 21 patients followed a minimum of 36 months (mean, 81 months; range, 36-136 months). There were nine Mason II, 10 Mason III, and two Mason IV fractures, which were evaluated clinically and radiographically. All fractures healed

Between November 1981 and November 1984, eight patients with comminuted radial head fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The recommended treatment for these fractures has been early motion, with or without radial head excision. According to the AO classification all were B3-1 or B3-2 fractures. All fractures were fixed through Kocher incisions using Kirschner wires and AO small fragment screws. All patients began motion 7 to 10 days following surgery. In a retrospective study, clinical results were reviewed in six patients with an average followup of 12 months (ran

In this case report, we want to show how a patient who underwent surgery for a distal humerus fracture developed postoperative ulnar neuropathy symptoms, how nonunion persisted even at the ninth month of follow-up, and whether the nonunion was connected to the ulnar neuropathy that developed. Due to this, we used this case to explore ulnar nerve care and whether ulnar nerve transposition, manipulation, or decompression should be carried out during surgery on patients with distal humerus fractures. INTRODUCTION: Monteggia lesion is a well-known injury that constitutes 0.7% of forearm fractures-dislocations. The combined presentation of Monteggia injury with ipsilateral distal radius fracture is an extremely rare lesion, especially in adults.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old woman fell from a chair, injuring her left forearm and wrist. On admission, plain roentgenograms of the left upper extremity revealed an anterior, Bado type-1 Monteggia fracture-dislocation associated with an ipsilateral distal radius fracture. The patient underwent surgical treatment of both injuries with a 3.5 limited co

Intraosseous median nerve entrapment at the level of the elbow can occur after a traumatic event such as fracture and/or dislocation of the elbow. It is considered a rare and severe entity. We present a rare case of nontraumatic median nerve entrapment inside the distal humerus. No article about atraumatic intraosseous entrapment was encountered in literature.

BACKGROUND: Primary total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) is a challenging procedure for orthopedic surgeons. It is not performed as frequently as compared to hip or knee arthroplasty. The elbow is a nonweight-bearing joint; however, static loading can create forces up to three times the body weight and dynamic loading up to six times. For elderly patients with deformity and ankylosis of the elbow due to posttraumatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis or comminuted fracture distal humerus, arthroplasty is one of the option. The aim of this study is to analyze the role of primary total elbow arthropla

Semiconstrained (linked design) total elbow arthroplasty is indicated in a wide variety of cases. Long-term survival is better than with non-linked prostheses. However, mechanical failure of the hinge mechanism is a complication that may occur during follow-up. We report a case of failure of the axle assembly of a Coonrad-Morrey elbow prosthesis 8 years after implantation for nonunion of a supracondylar distal humerus fracture. Initial revision surgery included changing the axle and the polyethylene bushings. Revision surgery was necessary 1 year later when the axle failed again. A custom-desi

AIMS: The ulna is an extremely rare location for primary bone tumours of the elbow in paediatrics. Although several reconstruction options are available, the optimal reconstruction method is still unknown due to the rarity of proximal ulna tumours. In this study, we report the outcomes of osteoarticular ulna allograft for the reconstruction of proximal ulna tumours.
METHODS: Medical profiles of 13 patients, who between March 2004 and November 2021 underwent osteoarticular ulna allograft reconstruction after the resection of the proximal ulna tumour, were retrospectively reviewed. The outcomes

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and clinical outcome of using an oblique AO (Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) metaphyseal locking compression plate (MLCP) in the treatment of adult extra-articular distal humeral diaphyseal fractures via a posterior approach.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A series of 19 cases of adult extra-articular distal humeral diaphyseal fractures were surgically treated using an MLCP and lag screws, if necessary, via a posterior approach. All patients were followed for a mean time of 16.6 months (range from 12 to 20 months). Th

An 11-year-old girl sustained an irreducible anterior radial head dislocation associated with a Salter-Harris type II proximal radial physeal injury and a volar annular ligament avulsion fracture after falling on an outstretched hand. Closed reduction was unsuccessful. During open reduction, the annular ligament was found interposed within the radiocapitellar joint, avulsed with a small bony fragment from the volar aspect of the radial notch. After ligament release, the radial head remained unstable, requiring anatomical repair using a pullout suture technique. At 1-year follow-up, the patient

In conclusion, radial head fractures with 3 or more fragments have a high incidence of complications when treated with ORIF including hardware failure, malunion, nonunion, and the need for re-operation. Radial head arthroplasty has demonstrated good success in the treatment of complex, comminuted radial head fractures which are not amenable to non-opeative treatment or ORIF. Success can be optimized by diligent surgical dissection, avoiding inadvertent nerve injury, placement of an appropriately sized implant, repair of associated injuries, and early protected motion.

Supracondylar humerus fractures are the most common elbow fractures in children. Displaced supracondylar humerus fractures that are associated with neurologic and/or vascular injuries should be treated with timely reduction via closed techniques. If closed reduction fails, reduction via open techniques is indicated. There is controversy about which surgical approach yields the best cosmetic and functional outcomes while minimizing postoperative complications. Open reduction, if indicated, has been reported to yield good outcomes in patients in whom closed reduction fails.

During the period from 1 January 1973 to 31 December 1978, 71 fractures of the carpal scaphoid were treated, 52 conservatively and 19 by primary surgery. For fractures treated conservatively, 12 weeks' immobilization is ample; in our opinion it may be reduced to 8-9 weeks for intracapsular and to 4 weeks for extracapsular fractures. The investigation by Alho et al. proves that immobilization of the elbow joint does not improve results, so that a short circular cast suffices.

Radial head fractures are the most common type of elbow fractures. Although a consensus has emerged that favors the nonsurgical treatment of undisplaced fractures, controversy surrounds the treatment of displaced radial head fractures. Further research is necessary to provide a better scientific rationale for making treatment recommendations. Options for the treatment of displaced fractures include nonoperative management, fragment excision, whole head excision, open reduction and internal fixation, and radial head arthroplasty. The purpose of this article is to review the mechanisms that resu…
