Excited state dynamics and activation parameters of remarkably slow photoinduced CO loss from (η⁶-benzene)Cr(CO)₃ in n-heptane solution: a DFT and picosecond-time-resolved infrared study.

The electronic structure of (η⁶-benzene)Cr(CO)₃ has been calculated using density functional theory and a molecular orbital interaction diagram constructed based on the Cr(CO)₃ and benzene fragments. The highest occupied molecular orbitals are mainly metal based. The nature of the lowest energy excited states were determined by time-dependent density functional theory, and the lowest energy excited state was found to have significant metal to carbonyl charge transfer character. The photochemistry of (η⁶-benzene)Cr(CO)₃ was investigated by time-resolved infrared spectroscopy with picosecond tim

Quinone extraction drives atmospheric carbon monoxide oxidation in bacteria.

Diverse bacteria and archaea use atmospheric CO as an energy source for long-term survival. Bacteria use [MoCu]-CO dehydrogenases (Mo-CODH) to convert atmospheric CO to carbon dioxide, transferring the obtained electrons to the aerobic respiratory chain. However, it is unknown how these enzymes oxidize CO at low concentrations and interact with the respiratory chain. Here, we use cryo-electron microscopy and structural modeling to show how Mo-CODHMs (CoxSML) from Mycobacterium smegmatis interacts with its partner, the membrane-bound menaquinone-binding protein CoxG. We provide electrochemical,

Systematic modulation of quantum (electron) tunneling behavior by atomic layer deposition on nanoparticulate SnO2 and TiO2 photoanodes.

Ultrathin films of TiO2, ZrO2, and Al2O3 were conformally created on SnO2 and TiO2 photoelectrodes via atomic layer deposition (ALD) to examine their influence upon electron transfer (ET) from the electrodes to a representative molecular receptor, I3(-). Films thicker than 2 Å engender an exponential decrease in ET time with increasing film thickness, consistent with tunneling theory. Increasing the height of the barrier, as measured by the energy difference between the transferring electron and the bottom of the conduction band of the barrier material, results in steeper exponential drops in

Transport Cross Sections and Collisional Energy Relaxation of Superthermal O(3P) Atoms in N2 for Planetary Aeronomy.

Superthermal ("hot") oxygen atoms deposit their energy in planetary upper atmospheres and in hypersonic shock layers through collisions with N2, but the rate at which they do so is set not by the magnitude of the collision cross section, which is dominated by forward diffraction, but by transport-weighted moments of the differential cross section (DCS). We derive momentum-transfer and viscosity cross sections, mean collisional deflections, and energy-relaxation rates for O(3P) + N2 from our previously reported quantum coupled-channel DCSs, for 16O, 17O, and 18O over collision energies 0.31-4.0

Substituent and Heteroatom Electronegativity Effects on ESIPT, Fluorescence Properties, and Antioxidant Activity of 5,3'-Dihydroxy-7,4'-Dimethoxyflavone Derivatives.

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) plays an important role in regulating the fluorescence behavior and photophysical properties of flavonoids. In this work, 5,3'-dihydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyflavone and its derivatives were systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations to clarify the effects of substituents (-CN/-NH2) and heteroatom electronegativity variation (O→S substitution) on ESIPT behavior, fluorescence properties, and antioxidant activity. The calculated excited-state potential energy cu

Exertion-induced fatigue and thermoregulation in the cold.

Cold exposure facilitates body heat loss which can reduce body temperature, unless mitigated by enhanced heat conservation or increased heat production. When behavioral strategies inadequately defend body temperature, vasomotor and thermogenic responses are elicited, both of which are modulated if not mediated by sympathetic nervous activation. Both exercise and shivering increase metabolic heat production which helps offset body heat losses in the cold. However, exercise also increases peripheral blood flow, in turn facilitating heat loss, an effect that can persist for some time after exerci

The photomutagenicity of fluoroquinolones and other drugs.

Induction of DNA damage as a consequence of exposure to UV light has been established as the major and still increasing cause of skin cancer. Absorption of the photon energy may be either directly by the DNA molecules (for wavelengths < 320 nm) or may be by endogenous or exogenous chemicals (sensitizers) with the potential of energy or electron transfer to DNA. Oxygen-mediated reactions (often called type II reactions) appear to be the most important mechanism since molecular oxygen is a good and abundant substrate for triplet excited sensitizers. Energy transfer to molecular oxygen is possibl…

Computational Study of Aryl Transfer Mechanism from Oxygen toward Nitrogen Catalyzed by Acridinium Ion.

Benzene is an organic compound that exhibits uniqueness due to its aromaticity. The uniqueness of benzene results in the ubiquity of its derivatives, for example, Trp-Cage and a self-healing polymer. The reaction regarding of the aryl functional group tends to be difficult to occur because of the high energy requirement in the dearomatization process. In the presence of a photocatalyst, aryl migration is possible under relatively mild conditions. In this research, the mechanism of aryl transfer reaction from oxygen toward nitrogen of 2-phenoxyethane-1-amine to 2-(phenylamino)ethane-1-ol has be

Interaction of Metamitron and Fenhexamid with Ca2+ -Montmorillonite Clay Surfaces: A Density Functional Theory Molecular Dynamics Study.

Metamitron (Meta), an herbicide, and fenhexamid (Fen), a fungicide, are authorized by the European Union to be used in agriculture. This article reports theoretical calculations about Meta and Fen in interaction with a clay surface: a Ca-montmorillonite (Mont). Conformational searches have been performed thanks to Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations from which geometries have been extracted. Interaction and adsorption energies have been calculated for isomers of Meta or Fen in interaction with Mont to understand the relative stability of various kinds of complexation. Substantial ads

Unveiling Volcano-Type Trends in SOCT-ISC Photosensitization: Energy Gap Law-Guided Strategy for Efficient Photodynamic Therapy.

The development of high-performance heavy-atom-free photosensitizers requires deep insight into their excited-state dynamics. We report a series of cyanine-based compounds functionalized at the C2 position that operate through spin-orbit charge transfer intersystem crossing (SOCT-ISC). A pronounced "volcano-type" relationship between photo-induced electron transfer (PeT) efficiency and singlet oxygen quantum yield was uncovered. Femtosecond transient spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations reveal that this trend stems from a dynamic competition between S1 and T2 intersystem crossing fro

Gigantol disrupts AR and iNOS conformation and promotes aggregation through direct molecular interaction to suppress diabetic cataract.

Diabetic cataract (DC) is a major cause of vision impairment, partly driven by the pathological roles of aldose reductase (AR) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Gigantol, a bibenzyl compound derived from Dendrobium, has shown potential in preventing DC, yet its molecular mechanism remains incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the modulation of conformational integrity and aggregation propensity of AR/iNOS by gigantol using fluorescent labeling, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), single-molecule imaging in living cells, fluorescence spectroscopy, confocal…

Functional genes with their expression and horizontal gene transfer drive microbial interactions in anammox systems: Critical review and potential applications.

The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process, a low-carbon and energy-efficient biological nitrogen removal technology, is crucial for sustainable wastewater treatment and energy self-sufficiency. However, its performance stability is influenced by complex microbial interactions, and the gene-level mechanisms, particularly horizontal gene transfer (HGT), remain underexplored. This review comprehensively examines the interactions between anammox bacteria and their syntrophic partners, focusing on the functional genes involved in substrate degradation, electron transfer, cofactor biosynthe

A universal photo-assisted kinetic enhancement strategy for high-rate batteries via non-planar dye sensitization.

Integrated photo-assisted rechargeable batteries have emerged as a highly promising strategy for solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, the rapid recombination of photocarriers under intense ion flux fails to provide an additional driving force to promote both interfacial charge transfer and lithium-ion (Li+) diffusion, thereby severely constraining their high-rate capability due to sluggish overall kinetics. Herein, we propose a universal photo-assisted strategy utilizing non-planar titanium oxo phthalocyanine (TiOPc) as a stable photosensitizer. The out-of-plane asymmetry and electron

Engineering synergistic VO-Co3+ pairs in CoOOH nanosheets for highly efficient and selective catalytic ozonation of CVOCs.

The catalytic activation of O3 on solid surfaces generates a spectrum of reactive oxygen species (ROS) with vastly different oxidative power. A central challenge lies in identifying surface sites that selectively produce highly oxidizing radicals over less reactive species, and in harnessing these potent ROS for efficient pollutant destruction. Here, we uncover a surface site dichotomy in cobalt oxides that governs O3 activation selectivity in the photo-enhanced catalytic ozonation of dichloromethane (DCM). Using CoOOH, Co3O4, and CoO as a model system, we demonstrate that O3 preferentially ad
