Motor function in young and aged hemiplegic rats: effects of a Ginkgo biloba extract.

We have previously shown beneficial effects of a Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb761-IPSEN) in accelerating functional recovery from hemiplegia induced by unilateral motor cortex ablation. Here, we report the behavioral and histological effects of various dose regimes of EGb761. In young rats (3 months), 10 mg/kg/day for 7 days produced an improvement in motor performance, relative to untreated controls, on the last day of treatment. Applying a priming (P)-maintenance (M) dose regime (P-7 = 7 days, M-21 = 21 days), a P-7 of 50 (all doses expressed in mg/kg/day) and a M-21 of 10 promoted recovery fro

Perioperative Indications for Gabapentinoids in Pediatrics: A Narrative Review.

In recent years, there has been increased interest in using gabapentinoids (gabapentin and pregabalin) as part of multimodal medication plans or enhanced recovery after surgery protocols to mitigate several perioperative clinical challenges. Outcomes explored in the context of using gabapentinoids perioperatively in children are variable and include acute complications of pain, anxiety, nausea and vomiting, and emergence agitation, as well as the long-term postoperative outcome of chronic postsurgical pain. This narrative review describes the current literature regarding perioperative use of g…

Perioperative nutrition therapy in high-risk patients: A narrative review.

Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), as the plan A and standard for perioperative management, has shifted the focus from routine nutritional support toward the early identification and targeted management of high-risk patients. The new ICD-11 code for undernutrition offers an opportunity to better identify and characterize surgical patients at nutritional risk, while also potentially improving clinical recognition, acceptance of nutritional risk as a relevant perioperative condition, and reimbursement for targeted nutritional interventions. Early preoperative interventions should be conside…

[Perioperative care about a patient with multimorbidity].

The assumption of accelerated postoperative recovery according to the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) method is good condition of the patient prepared for surgery and gently operated on. Application of ERAS in postoperative care in the situation of patient with multimorbidity requires an individual approach and greater pre-operative preparation. During the healing process, the operation causes a systemic inflammatory reaction in the body, which is proportional to the size of the surgery trauma. There is fluid movement between the intravascular and interstitial spaces, increased protein …
