Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) detection of antiamoebic antibodies in the patients' sera, has been carried out and correlated with the routine diagnostic microscopic examination of stool and pus samples. The faeces of twenty scouts working at Borgu games were examined for the presence of parasites and bacteria. Cysts of Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas hominis were found. Helminth ova encountered included those of Ancylostoma duodenale, Ascaris lumbricoides, Stronglyloides stercoralis and Trichuris trichiura. Escherichia coli and Shigella flexneri were isolated from one faecal sample each. In all, parasites were found in the faeces of only 9 scouts. Amebic hepatic abscess can mimic other hepatic disorders and is a commonly missed diagnosis. It occurs when Entamoeba histolytica infection of the cecum remains untreated and there is embolic spread to the liver. Symptoms include acute or insidious onset of fever, with or without chills, pain in the right hypochondrium or epigastrium with evidence of hepatomegaly, and intercostal or subcostal tenderness. Diagnosis is established by a combination of radiologic and nuclear scanning procedures, serologic tests and aspiration of the abscess.

Acute necrotising colitis and perforation of the colon due to amebic infection is usually fatal. Only three patients in the present series of nine survived surgery. Preoperative diagnosis was not possible and because of an extremely friable, blotting paper like colon, this condition was only suspected at laparotomy. Examination of ulcer scrapings for the presence of Entamoeba histolytica or histopathology is confirmatory. Resection anastomosis is mandatory as less extensive local procedures or bypass surgery are not always feasible.

Diseases contracted in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and observed in Western Australia (WA) have comprised malaria, amoebiasis, ancylostomiasis, filariasis and leprosy. This small series of cases demonstrates the prolongation of incubation periods of malaria following chemoprophylaxis, the spread of chloroquine-resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum (both to Western and Eastern regions of PNG), the ineffectiveness of chloroquine against Entamoeba histolytica in the intestine and the value of oral penicillin as a prophylactic for filarial lymphangitis.

The authors carried out an epidemiological survey for the evaluation of the incidence of the parasitoses in a Somali village localized in proximity to a watercourse. They found parasites in the 72,53% of the examined population: Schistosoma haematobium 42.5%, Ascaris lumbricoides 32%, Ancylostoma duodenale 14%, Entamoeba histolytica 7,5%. The immunofluorescence, nevertheless, showed the presence of antiparasite antibodies in a much higher percentages of cases; it could meant that the real incidence of the various parasitoses is greater than it appears with direct examination.

We herein report a case of ulcerative colitis (UC) exacerbated by strongyloidiasis. Parasites including Strongyloides stercoralis and Entamoeba histolytica can cause chronic gastrointestinal inflammation and long-lasting symptoms resembling UC. On the other hand, it is not well-known that such organisms can trigger the exacerbation of pre-existing UC. We would like to highlight the importance of recognition of strongyloidiasis in the management of UC patients who have lived in or migrated from endemic regions, such as Asia, Africa, and South America.

Perianal cutaneous amebiasis is a rare entity, with 0.03% to 0.07% reported incidence. We present two cases of perianal cutaneous amebiasis, both in male patients. Diagnosis was established by biopsy, with demonstration of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites. Treatment with metronidazol was performed with good outcome. Although incidence of perianal cutaneous amebiasis is low, this entity must be kept in mind when painful atypical ulcers appear in this region. Diagnosis must be confirmed by identification of the parasite and treatment must be established with antiamebic extra-luminal drugs.

Thirty three patients with hepatopulmonary amoebiasis were studied. Pulmonary involvement was observed in 55%, pleuro-pulmonary lesions in 30%. Typical chocolate coloured sputum was obtained in 24% and pleural fluid in 21% of patients. Entamoeba histolytica were demonstrable in the sputum in only 6% and in the pleural fluid in 15%. The best therapeutic results were obtained with a combination of dehydroemetine and metronidazole. However, metronidazole was found to be nearly as effective as dehydroemetine, and metronidazole 400 mg and 800 mg were equally effective.
