UNLABELLED: Hip pain during infancy is frequently harmless by nature and hardly demands any therapeutic intervention. A careful differential diagnosis is of great importance.
AIM: In our study we attempted to evaluate the significance of sonography as a non-radiant and economical aid in the differential diagnosis of hip diseases during infancy.
METHODS: The study population consisted of children aged from 2 to 14 years, who visited our clinic with hip complaints and evident capsular distension (more than 2 mm compared to the contralateral hip joint) and without preceeding diagnosis. The stud

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common disorder of the growing hip; however, its etiology remains unknown. Vitamin D (25-OH) is a major regulator of bone homeostasis and calcium metabolism. Vitamin D deficiency is one of the major causes of rickets, and rickets has been associated with SCFE. Increased body mass index (BMI) has been linked to SCFE and obese children are known to have lower vitamin D levels. Therefore, we hypothesize that children who develop SCFE may have subclinical rickets predisposing them to the development of physeal disease.
METHODS: This was a

Pediatric overuse injury is a common complaint presenting to pediatricians. Overuse injury can affect the soft tissues or bone, and results from an imbalance between training and load to the tissues and recovery time. In the skeletally immature athlete, physeal and apophyseal tissue is particularly vulnerable to overuse resulting in different patterns of injury compared to adults. Awareness of age-dependent patterns of overuse is necessary for proper recognition, treatment, and prevention of injury. This article reviews the most common pediatric overuse injuries with emphasis on risk factors,

We present our experience of the modified Dunn procedure in combination with a Ganz surgical dislocation of the hip to treat patients with severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). The aim was to prospectively investigate whether this technique is safe and reproducible. We assessed the degree of reduction, functional outcome, rate of complications, radiological changes and range of movement in the hip. There were 28 patients with a mean follow-up of 38.6 months (24 to 84). The lateral slip angle was corrected by a mean of 50.9° (95% confidence interval 44.3 to 57.5). The mean modified H

Pediatric hip pathology varies depending on patient age. Newborns are often screened for developmental dysplasia of the hip, whereas toddlers and older children can present later with pain, leg length discrepancy, or limp. Young children may have hip pain related to transient synovitis, septic arthritis, or Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. Older children are more likely to suffer from slipped capital femoral epiphysis or apophyseal avulsion fractures. Knowledge about how the growing skeleton differs from adults as well as the classic imaging findings in many of these diagnoses is paramount when tak

Down Syndrome can result in musculoskeletal abnormalities of the hip at an early age. Avascular necrosis of the femoral head can occur as a result of slipped capital femoral epiphysis causing the patient a great deal of pain, limiting the ability to ambulate. Despite the benefits that this patient group can receive from the surgery, surgeons may be apprehensive to operate. It is our experience that these patients benefit greatly from arthroplasty without complication. In this report, we present a total hip replacement to treat avascular necrosis in an adolescent and address the concerns that s

BACKGROUND: The most important objective of clinical classifications of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is to identify hips associated with a high risk of avascular necrosis (AVN)--so-called unstable or acute slips; however, closed surgery makes confirmation of physeal stability difficult. Performing the capital realignment procedure in SCFE treatment we observed that clinical estimation of physeal stability did not always correlate with intraoperative findings at open surgery. This motivated us to perform a systematic comparison of the clinical classification systems with the intraop

AIM: It was the aim of this study to reveal whether and to what extent femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI) was present 10 to 20 years after transfixation of the gliding epiphysis in patients treated for unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE).
METHOD: Clinical and radiological evaluations were undertaken of 20 patients who were treated with a bilateral transfixation of the epiphysis with screws or Kirschner wires because of mild unilateral SCFE. The Harris hip score, the activity level according to Tegner and Lysholm and the range of motion of both hip joints were noted. An imping

Nine patients with chondrolysis secondary to slipped capital femoral epiphysis of the hip were followed up from a minimum of 7 to a maximum of 19 years (average, 13.7 years) after the onset of the disease. The degree of slipping of the proximal epiphysis of the femur was severe in five patients and moderately severe in four patients. The nine patients were treated with non-weight bearing, antiinflammatory drugs, and physical therapy. The disease had a good resolution, with gradual regression of pain, and radiographs showed restoration of the joint space in an average of 10 months. At follow-up

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is the most common adolescent hip disorder and remains a significant cause of pain, gait disturbance, proximal femoral deformity, and early degenerative hip disease. Accurate classification of SCFE is essential for diagnosis, prognostication, treatment planning, and communication among orthopedic surgeons. Over the past several decades, multiple classification systems have been proposed based on symptom duration, physeal stability, radiographic severity, and deformity morphology. However, substantial variability exists regarding their reliability, progn

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a common hip problem in children. The resulting deformity can cause impingement similar to cam-type idiopathic femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Although there are similarities between FAI and SCFE, deformity patterns, severity, and time of onset of symptoms varies, which may impact management. The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of articular cartilage damage in patients undergoing surgical hip dislocation for sequelae of SCFE in comparison to patients undergoing arthroscopic surgery for primary FAI.

BACKGROUND: Unstable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has a relatively high risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Standard treatment for unstable SCFE is still controversial. We reviewed unstable SCFE case series treated with the standardized protocol, which consisted of percutaneous pinning after prolonged skeletal traction.
METHODS: Our treatment regimen for unstable SCFE patients included 1 week or more of skeletal traction with the hip in a flexed position of 45 degrees, and subsequent percutaneous pinning after unintentional reduction. Eleven patients were treated in ou

BACKGROUND: With recent changing approaches to the management of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), the accurate radiographic assessment of maximum extent of displacement is crucial for planning surgical treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To determine what plane best represents the maximum SCFE displacement as quantified by the head-neck angle difference (HNAD), whether HNAD can quantitatively differentiate the SCFE cohort from the normal cohort, based on CT, and how Southwick slip angle (SSA) compares to HNAD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed 19 children with SCFE (23 affected hips) with preope

BACKGROUND: The treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has produced in its complexity a great deal of discussion. One well-established method of operative treatment is the corrective intertrochanteric osteotomy according to Imhäuser. This study presents the clinical and radiological long-term results and the biomechanical impacts of this invasive intervention.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 28 patients with chronic SCFE with slip angles between 30° and 60° were treated by Imhäuser osteotomy at an average age of 13.7 years (SD± 2.2 years, range 9-19 years) and were reexamined

BACKGROUND: The results of primary total hip arthroplasties (THAs) after pediatric hip diseases such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), or Perthes' disease have been reported to be inferior to the results after primary osteoarthritis of the hip (OA).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared the survival of primary THAs performed during the period 1995-2009 due to previous DDH, SCFE, Perthes' disease, or primary OA, using merged individual-based data from the Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish arthroplasty registers, called the Nordic Arthroplasty Regi

We reviewed prospectively, after skeletal maturity, a series of 24 patients (25 hips) with severe acute-on-chronic slipped capital femoral epiphysis which had been treated by subcapital cuneiform osteotomy. Patients were followed up for a mean of 8 years, 3 months (2 years, 5 months to 16 years, 4 months). Bedrest with 'slings and springs' had been used for a mean of 22 days (19 to 35) in 22 patients, and bedrest alone in two, before definitive surgery. The Iowa hip score, the Harris hip score and Boyer's radiological classification for degenerative disease were used. The mean Iowa hip score a

When not diagnosed early and managed appropriately, common musculoskeletal injuries may result in long-term disabling conditions. Anterior cruciate ligament tears are some of the most common knee ligament injuries. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis may present with little or no hip pain, and subtle or absent physical and radiographic findings. Femoral neck stress fractures, if left untreated, may result in avascular necrosis, refractures and pseudoarthrosis. A delay in diagnosis of scaphoid fractures may cause early wrist arthrosis if nonunion results. Ulnar collateral ligament tears are a fre
