[Somatosensory evoked potentials: morphology and interareal S1-M1 relationships in the baboon (Papio papio)].

Primary somatosensory potentials (SEPs) were elicited by electrical stimulation of the medial sciatic (proprioceptive) or sural (cutaneous) nerves. They were detected by contacts on SI and MI dura on both cortical sides against a cephalic reference. SEPs were averaged (n = 20). Primary SI SEP consisted of positive, then negative, PI6/N30 waves. N30 was absent from MI records. Local electrocoagulation of the SI cortex on one side has entailed some reduction, but not suppression of together the homolateral MI and contralateral SI and MI SEP. The residual SEPs have increased in latencies by a few

Clinical interest of brainstem auditory evoked potentials in 72 children with inadequate language development.

The present study is of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in 72 children, of 2 to 13 years of age, showing inadequate language development. The age of the children was mainly below the age of 4 (39 cases = 54%), peaking between 3 and 4 years of age (33 cases = 46%). Even so, 82% of our patients were 3 years old or over: 64% were boys, 36% girls, the proportion of boys falling off with age 26% (19 cases) of BAEPs recorded were normal, 74% (53 cases) pathological. High prevalence of undiagnosed hearing loss was found. Physiopathological BAEP classification showed endocochlear impairmen…

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in Parkinson's disease: correlation of pattern VEPs abnormality with dementia.

There has been some debate about abnormalities in visual evoked potentials (VEP) in Parkinson's disease (PD). To elucidate the mechanism underlying abnormal VEPs, we investigated the relationship between pattern-reversal VEPs elicited by large checks and mental functions in PD patients (n = 32), as compared with VEPs of age-matched control subjects (n = 22). The PD patients were divided into two groups: PD without dementia (nD-PD; n = 21) and PD with dementia (D-PD; n = 11). All patients but five of the nD-PD patients were being treated with anti-parkinsonian drugs. The D-PD patients showed si…

A case of neonatal spinal cord injury: magnetic resonance imaging and somatosensory evoked potentials.

This is the first case report on the diagnosis of spinal cord injury due to hemorrhage during the neonatal period using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Somatosensory evoked potentials are also helpful in the functional demonstration of this lesion. When discrepant signs, alert consciousness and intact cranial nerves are observed in newborn babies with flaccid extremities and respiratory disturbance, the immediate carrying out of MRI is mandatory in order to differentiate spinal cord injury from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, cerebral hemorrhage, and neuromuscular disease.

[Evaluation of visual evoked potentials and static perimetry in chiasmal tumors and retrobulbar neuritis].

The author presented results of visual evoked potentials and static perimetry examinations performed in 17 patients with chiasmal tumors and in 27 with retrobulbar neuritis. A comparative analysis of the gathered parameters was done, using computer programs. The results suggest that the applied non-invasive methods of examination could be useful in differential diagnosis of these diseases.

[The use of short-latency auditory evoked potentials in the diagnosis of acoustic neurinomas].

The short-latent acoustic evoked potentials in patients with unilateral neurosensory hypoacusis due to the tumor of the acoustic nerve or other etiology were recorded. It was found that the patients had no potential in the diseased area in monaural sound stimulation, but binaural sound stimulation enabled these potentials to be recorded. With this, the short-latent acoustic evoked potentials in patients with verified neurinoma showed a reduction in the third wave to the point of its disappearance. Those in patients whose neurosensory hypoacusis were unassociated with the development of neoplas…

The role of motor evoked potentials in the management of hysterical paraplegia: case report.

The role of motor evoked potentials in the management of a case of presumed hysterical paraplegia precipitated by spinal injury in a man with a previous history of surgery for scoliosis is presented. Motor evoked potentials were elicited with magnetic stimulation 12 days after injury and were within normal limits. The presence of normal motor electrophysiology and observation by the patient of involuntary movement of the lower limbs during stimulation greatly facilitated the patient's management. These findings are discussed with reference to current diagnostic investigations in the presence o…

Correlation between sensory loss, functional disability and short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials in strokes.

Short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were reviewed for their correlation with the clinical features and functional deficit of 64 patients with supratentorial deep or superficial ischemic strokes. Abnormal SEPs correlated with lesions of proprioceptive pathways and with clinical sensory impairment. 87% of patients with abnormal SEPs had sensory loss and 88% of those with normal SEPs had normal sensation. The reliability of the SEPs made them useful in an objective demonstration of an abnormality in sensory system function. However, they are not sensitive enough to be used as a m…

[Somatosensory evoked potentials in the sleep-wakefulness cycle in healthy subjects and narcolepsy patients].

Studies of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) were conducted in various functional states of sleep-alertness cycle (relaxed alertness, 2-nd and delta-stages of slow sleep, rapid sleep) in 7 healthy subjects and 8 patients with polysymptom narcolepsy. Integrated amplitude (IA) was calculated in poststimulus intervals, accordingly to SSEPs division into groups of early (20-80 ms), mean (80-200 ms) and late (200-400 ms) components. It has been shown that in patients with polysymptom narcolepsy IA of all SSEPs components in alertness was lower than in healthy subjects; during sleep higher IA …

Effect of decreased retinal illumination on simultaneously recorded pattern electroretinograms and visual-evoked potentials.

Sixteen normal subjects and three patients with optic neuritis were studied to determine the effect of decreased retinal illumination on simultaneously recorded pattern electroretinograms (PERG) and visual-evoked potentials (VEP). Using neutral-density filters (NDF), it was found that linear modeling is an excellent fit for VEP/PERG amplitudes and latencies as log functions of retinal illumination, both for individual eyes and averages of pooled data. Within narrow statistical limits, regression slopes show that mean PERG B-wave and VEP P100 latencies are affected almost identically by decreas…

Cortical evoked potentials by stimulation of the vesicourethral junction: clinical value and neurophysiological considerations.

In 21 healthy volunteers and 42 patients with either neurogenic bladder dysfunction (24), partial peripheral denervation of the bladder (12) or nonneurogenic bladder dysfunction (6) scalp-derived evoked potentials after stimulation of the vesicourethral junction (cortical evoked potentials) were recorded. In addition, evoked potentials from the posterior tibial nerve (tibial somatosensory evoked potentials) and from the pudendal nerve (pudendal somatosensory evoked potentials) were evaluated. The results obtained in normal subjects were reproducible and comparable to those reported in previous…

[Diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss by ipsilateral masking of brain stem auditory evoked potentials].

The Authors show their original technique for the differential diagnosis of cochlear and retrocochlear hearing loss which employs ipsilateral masking of the A.B.R. in order to define the difference in V wave latency between a standard technique (clicks at 21 pps without noise) and a sensitized technique (clicks at 21 pps with noise at S/N of +40). This difference in latency has been named Sensitizing Latency Difference (SLD). Sixty normal subjects, 85 patients with cochlear hearing loss and 6 with retrocochlear hearing loss, were studied. The obtained data showed a SLD value: in normal hearing

[Changes in the early auditory evoked potentials during premature infancy, infancy and early childhood].

We report on the derivation of the early acoustic evoked potentials (EAEP) in 498 healthy normotrophic infants between the 32nd post-conceptional week and the end of the 3rd year of life. The changes of the wave latencies and interpeak intervals in different age periods until they reached the constant values found in adults are followed by 1528 potential derivations. The varying rate of maturation of the auditory pathway in the brain stem can be followed up well by the potential patterns. The time around the 34th post-conceptional week is characterized by a maturation episode of central and pe…

Somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with selective impairment of position sense versus vibration sense.

Ten patients with selective impairment of either position sense or vibration sense were studied with somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). Five patients with spinal cord lesion (three with MS, one with spinal cord tumor and one with spinal cord injury) lost the vibration sense below the iliac crests without impairment of the position sense. However, five patients with cerebral vascular lesions involving thalamus unilaterally showed severe impairment of position sense, though there was no asymmetry as to the vibration sense. In all these cases with spinal and cerebral lesions, SEPs showed abnor

[Involvement of central nervous system in patients with diabetes mellitus detected by evoked potentials].

Somatosensory (SSEPs) and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded for 44 patients with diabetes mellitus (age, 63.0 +/- 9.3 years, mean +/- SD) and 20 age-matched healthy controls (age, 67.3 +/- 9.1 years) to elucidate the involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, relationships between SSEP or BAEP and clinical variables such as autonomic nervous function, peripheral nerve conduction velocity, duration of diabetes, metabolic control (fasting blood sugar level, HbA1 and HbA1c levels) and therapeutic method, were studied. The central co…

Central fiber contribution to W-shaped visual evoked potentials in patients with optic neuritis.

We studied W-shaped waveforms that occurred in full-field responses to pattern large-field stimulation in patients who had optic neuritis. Affected eyes showed no absolute scotomata; visual acuity was normal at the time of recording. To evaluate the contribution of macular- and paramacular-derived components to the development of the W-shaped waveforms in the patients, half-field and central full-field stimulation was used. The responses were compared with those obtained with the use of experimental scotomata in healthy subjects. The W-shaped waveforms recorded in the patients closely resemble

Visually evoked potentials and simple reaction times to visual stimuli in chronic disulphide intoxication.

The relationship between parameters of visually evoked potentials (VEPs) and the results of a psychological test assessing the speed of motor reaction to visual stimuli was examined in 21 patients with chronic carbon disulphide intoxication. Correlations obtained suggest cerebral disfunction of the visual pathway and diminished ability to transform visual information to motor reaction at the level of the cortical association centre.

[Short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials and magnetic resonance imaging in the medial medullary syndrome].

A 57-year-old woman was admitted to Kakeyu Hospital complaining of paresis of the left upper and lower extremities which suddenly developed … in the anterior medial portion of the medulla just below the pontomedullary junction. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) after median nerve stimulation with a non-cephalic reference were recorded. After stimulation of the left side, the scalp-recorded P13 was recognized at the normal latency, but the later components, N16 and N18, were apparently absent. On the …
