Sports-related maxillofacial fractures in a hospital material.

Sports-related maxillofacial fractures were analysed in 80 patients, accounting for 5.6% of all patients with facial bone fractures, treated during the 5-year period 1981-1985. 55% of the patients had 1 or more mandibular fractures and 45% had midface fractures. 6% of the patients had multiple injuries. The most common causes of injury were collision and fall. Soccer and ice hockey turned out to be the most hazardous sports, although sports-related maxillofacial fractures were less severe than those related to other causes. The need for oral and facial protection among athletes involved in con

Fracture patterns in the maxillofacial region: a four-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: The facial bones are the most noticeable area in the human body, and facial injuries can cause significant functional, aesthetic, and psychological complications. Continuous study of the patterns of facial bone fractures and changes in trends is helpful in the prevention and treatment of maxillofacial fractures. The purpose of the current clinico-statistical study is to investigate the pattern of facial fractures over a 4-year period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1,824 fracture sites was carried out in 1,284 patients admitted to SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center…

Spared nerve injury model to study orofacial pain.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: There are many difficulties in generating and testing orofacial pain in animal models. Thus, only a few and limited models that mimic the human condition are available. The aim of the present research was to develop a new model of trigeminal pain by using a spared nerve injury (SNI) surgical approach in the rat face (SNI-face). METHODS: Under anaesthesia, a small incision was made in the infraorbital region of adult male Wistar rats. Three of the main infraorbital nerve branches were tightly ligated and a 2 mm segment distal to the ligation was resected. Control rats

Facial transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Twenty-one face transplants have been performed to date. This review provides an overview of the clinical outcomes and the lessons learned from these initial cases. RECENT FINDINGS: Facial transplantation has progressed over the past 10 years from an experimental possibility to a clinical reality. The most recent transplants performed in the USA, Spain and Turkey involve the full face. Good sensory recovery of the allograft has been consistently reported, even in the absence of nerve repair. As predicted, motor recovery has been slower than re-innervation of sensation. Dram

An unusual case of orbito-frontal rod fence stab injury with a good outcome.

BACKGROUND: High-energy non-missile penetrating injuries (stab injuries) account for a small percentage of penetrating head injuries and they present a series of special features. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old man suffered orbito-frontal? and trans-cranial injuries after falling five meters from a terrace onto a rod iron fence. The removal of the metal rod was performed outside the operating room. The orbital roof was exposed and repaired through a bifrontal craniotomy and the frontal sinuses were cranialised. The orbital floor and zygoma were plated with micro-screws. CONCLUSION: The pat

Severe laryngeal injuries masked by fractured mandible.

UNLABELLED: A 17-year-old male was referred to the maxillofacial department regarding a fractured mandible. Airway compromise was suspected as a result of neck swelling, stridor, haemoptysis and surgical emphysema. Severe laryngeal injuries were diagnosed, including a fractured hyoid. His treatment and outcomes are summarized, with discussion of aetiology, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of laryngeal injuries, including urgent airway management, if necessary. The risks and complications of delayed diagnosis and treatment are discussed, particularly if symptoms are delayed or the injury is ma

Peripheral seventh nerve palsy due to transorbital intracranial penetrating pontine injury.

The case of a child injured by a knitting needle penetrating transorbitally and intracranially, resulting in carotid cavernous fistula and pontine injury, is reported. After receiving medical and endovascular treatment, the only remaining abnormal neurological manifestation was right peripheral facial nerve palsy. The clinical sequences of events and the demonstration of a pontine lesion leading to peripheral facial palsy are presented. Facial nuclear injury with a penetrating trauma is an extremely rare condition. It is important to identify the anatomical regions injured in penetrating traum

Maxillofacial Bony Considerations in Facial Transplantation.

Alloplastic facial transplantation has become a new rung on the proverbial reconstructive ladder for severe facial wounds in the past couple of decades. Since the first transfer including bony components in 2006, numerous facial allotransplantations across many countries have been successfully performed, many incorporating multiple bony elements of the face. There are many unique considerations to facial transplantation of bone, however, beyond the considerations of simple soft tissue transfer. Herein, we review the current literature and considerations specific to bony facial transplantation

Facial palsy from temporal bone lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve palsy results in the loss of facial expression and is most commonly caused by a benign self-limiting inflammatory condition, known as Bell's palsy. However, there are other conditions which may result in injury of the seventh cranial nerve and the radiologist should be familiar with their imaging appearances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The relevant anatomy of the facial nerve and pathology which may affect the intratemporal portion of the nerve is described. The role of imaging and choice of imaging modality is also reviewed. RESULTS: High-resolution computer tomograph

[Cranial nerve injuries in children].

Eleven children with injuries to the cranial nerves were examined. It has been revealed that as a result of surgical interventions, the facial nerve gets affected more frequently. The results of the treatment often appear unsatisfactory because of the late referral of the victims to hospitals for operative treatment.

[Isolated paralysis of the ramus marginalis mandibulae nervi facialis: clinical aspects, etiology, diagnosis and therapy. An overview].

BACKGROUND: Disorders of lower lip in facial expression are mostly caused by functional impairment of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. In a typical case, active exposure of the incisors of the mandible is not possible and the lip appears distorted towards the healthy side. The most frequent cause of a lesion of the marginal mandibular branch is iatrogenic injury during operations in the mandibular or parotid region. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS: Functional disorders of the platysma, congenital hypoplasia or aplasia of the lower lip muscles, and defective healing following facial

Endoscopic-assisted midface lift utilizing retrograde dissection.

Endoscopic facial surgery is gaining wide acceptance, as results are providing comparable if not superior to the standard, superficial musculoaponeurotic system rhytidectomy, with minimal scarring. Frontal branch facial nerve injury remains a troublesome complication. The purpose of our study was to determine if a subciliary retrograde dissection would decrease facial nerve injury and allow for more accurate midfacial suspension. Fresh cadaver dissections were performed using endoscopic equipment. Anterograde temporal incisions in the scalp and retrograde subciliary incisions were studied. The

Deep Temporal Nerve Transfer for Facial Reanimation: Anatomic Dissections and Surgical Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Facial nerve palsy is a disabling condition that may arise from a variety of injuries or insults and may occur at any point along the nerve or its intracerebral origin. OBJECTIVE: To examine the use of the deep temporal branches of the motor division of the trigeminal nerve for neural reconstruction of the temporal branches of the facial nerve for restoration of active blink and periorbital facial expression. METHODS: Formalin-fixed human cadaver hemifaces were dissected to identify landmarks for the deep temporal branches and the tension-free coaptation lengths. This technique w
