Anti-tumor efficacy of a transcriptional replication-competent adenovirus, Ad-OC-E1a, for osteosarcoma pulmonary metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma (OSA) is the most frequent type of primary malignant bone tumor and is apt to occur in children and young adults. Pulmonary metastasis (OSPM) is the major reason for its fatal outcome. Osteocalcin (OC) is a major noncollagenous bone protein whose expression is limited almost exclusively to bone marrow and osteotropic tumors. OC is also known to express in cell lines with bone metastasis feathers. Gene therapy strategies with the OC promoter directing the replication of adenovirus in a tumor-specific manner are a potential modality for OSPM therapy. METHODS: We detecte…

Research note: Serum and glucocorticoid-induced kinase 1 is associated with inflammatory responses to Eimeria tenella and modulates cytokine expression, sporozoite-positive cell proportion, and apoptosis in chicken cells.

Avian coccidiosis, caused by several species of the genus Eimeria, remains a major constraint on poultry production, with Eimeria tenella (E. tenella) representing an important pathogenic species that primarily infects the chicken cecum. Host genes associated with the inflammatory response may provide useful candidates for resistance evaluation. In our previous transcriptome analysis, serum and glucocorticoid-induced kinase 1 (SGK1), fatty acid binding protein 1 (FABP1), and bone morphogenetic protein 3 (BMP3) were identified as candidate genes in yellow-feathered broilers. Here, these genes w

Astaxanthin Alleviates Ochratoxin A (OTA)-Induced Spleen Dysfunction and Apoptosis in Broiler Chickens by Modulating the PTEN/PI3K/AKT Signaling Pathway.

Ochratoxin A (OTA), a common mycotoxin contaminant, poses significant health risks through its multi-organ toxicity. While OTA is known to cause immune organ dysfunction leading to immunotoxicity, its precise mechanistic pathways remain unclear. The spleen is an important immune organ of the body and plays a key role in immune defense and homeostasis maintenance. Astaxanthin (AST), a potent antioxidant with demonstrated immunomodulatory properties, exhibits a broad therapeutic potential including anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, anti-aging, and hepatoprotective effects. Therefore, this study

Organic medium-growing chickens fed live black soldier fly larvae: A welfare improvement study.

The overall beneficial effect of live black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) on the welfare of broiler chickens, turkeys, and laying hens has already been discussed in the literature. However, scant information is available regarding the benefits of feeding live BSFL to medium-growing chicken hybrids reared under organic/free-range conditions, and whose welfare is frequently cited as being inadequate. The aim of this research was to advance our knowledge of this topic. To this end, 240 label naked neck birds (Hubbard JA57 hybrid) were assigned, at 21 days of age, to four experimental groups (6 replic
