Vagal oxytocin receptors are necessary for esophageal motility and function.

Oxytocin plays a key role in reproductive physiology but has recently garnered interest for its involvement in modulating feeding behavior. The vagus nerve contributes to feeding behavior control, as well as other gastrointestinal functions. Oxytocin receptors (OTR) are expressed on the vagus, but their role is poorly understood. Herein, we evaluated the contribution of the vagal OTR to food intake and body weight control in male and female rats. Virogenetic knockdown of vagal OTR resulted in reduced body weight and food intake in male rats. Loss of OTR in the vagus also resulted in suppressed…

Genetic parameters of behavior traits of beef cattle classified using wearable devices.

With the development of wearable devices, it is now possible to monitor livestock behavior 24 h a day. In this study, we estimated the genetic parameters of the daily duration of six behaviors (feeding, moving, lying, standing, ruminating while lying, and ruminating while standing) in beef cattle, automatically classified using wearable devices. The devices were attached to 332 Japanese beef cattle at two stations for approximately 5 months. We compared repeatability, Poisson regression, and random regression models using the deviance information criterion. Poisson regression models were selec

Centrifugal projections to the main olfactory bulb revealed by transsynaptic retrograde tracing in mice.

A wide range of evidence indicates that olfactory perception is strongly involved in food intake. However, the polysynaptic circuitry linking the brain areas involved in feeding behavior to the olfactory regions is not well known. The aim of this article was to examine such circuits. Thus, we described, using hodological tools such as transsynaptic viruses (PRV152) transported in a retrograde manner, the long-distance indirect projections (two to three synapses) onto the main olfactory bulb (MOB). The ß-subunit of the cholera toxin which is a monosynaptic retrograde tracer was used as a contro…

Mass spectrometry based proteomic analysis of salivary glands of urban malaria vector Anopheles stephensi.

Salivary gland proteins of Anopheles mosquitoes offer attractive targets to understand interactions with sporozoites, blood feeding behavior, homeostasis, and immunological evaluation of malaria vectors and parasite interactions. To date limited studies have been carried out to elucidate salivary proteins of An. stephensi salivary glands. The aim of the present study was to provide detailed analytical attributives of functional salivary gland proteins of urban malaria vector An. stephensi. A proteomic approach combining one-dimensional electrophoresis (1DE), ion trap liquid chromatography mass…

Molecular cloning, characterization and functional analysis of QRFP in orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides).

The peptide QRFP plays an important role in the regulation of vertebrate feeding behavior. In this study, we cloned the full length cDNA of a QRFP precursor in a teleost fish, the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Sequence analysis has shown that the functional regions of QRFP in other vertebrates (QRFP-25 and QRFP-7) are conserved in orange-spotted grouper. RT-PCR demonstrated that the pre-processed mRNA of QRFP is widely expressed in orange-spotted grouper. Three days of food deprivation did not change the hypothalamic pre-processed QRFP expression. However, QRFP expression sign…

Eating styles with some feeling: Latent profiles of appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits.

INTRODUCTION: Research focused on adult eating styles would benefit from investigating whether latent profiles of appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits differ in eating disorder (ED) and general psychopathology. OBJECTIVE: This study identified and validated latent eating profiles based on appetitive and emotion-related impulsivity traits. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional study in a non-clinical sample of 232 adults who completed an online battery of questionnaires assessing appetitive traits, emotion-related impulsivity, ED symptomatology, anxiety, depression, stress, and

A Novel Automated System Yields Reproducible Temporal Feeding Patterns in Laboratory Rodents.

BACKGROUND: The impact of temporal feeding patterns remains a major unanswered question in nutritional science. Progress has been hampered by the absence of a reliable method to impose temporal feeding in laboratory rodents, without the confounding influence of food-hoarding behavior. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a reliable method for supplying crushed diets to laboratory rodents in consistent, relevant feeding patterns for prolonged periods. METHODS: We programmed our experimental feeding station to deliver a standard diet [StD; Atwater Fuel Energy (AFE) 13.9

Brief report: breast-fed one-week-olds demonstrate superior neurobehavioral organization.

OBJECTIVES: Following studies conducted during the immediate newborn stage, we investigated whether one-week-olds' neurobehavioral functioning was differentiated by feeding method. We also examined whether feeding-method effects differed among infants of adolescent mothers. METHOD: Participants were infants (N = 83) of breast-feeding (N = 41) and formula-feeding (N = 42) mothers. Approximately half of each group's participants had adolescent mothers and half were infants of adult mothers. Assessments on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (BNBAS) were conducted on the infants w

Transitioning the child fed by gastrostomy into school.

Young children dependent on gastrostomy feeding are examples of special-needs children now eligible for expanded nutrition services in schools through Public Law 99-457. With the implementation of this law, nutritionists have an opportunity to expand their roles as consultants to special education teachers. A team approach involving nutrition, nursing, and special education was used to prepare a gastrostomy-fed preschool child and his family for school. The family of the multihandicapped child had been isolated by the child's feeding problems and viewed the problems as barriers to his entering

Going beyond appearance: Embodiment throughout adolescence and its associations with identity functioning and eating behaviors.

The complex relationship between body (dis)satisfaction, identity, and disordered eating in adolescence has been highlighted in previous studies. However, longitudinal research on this interplay using a holistic approach in assessing embodiment is lacking. The current study used three-wave longitudinal data (T1: N = 923; 59.6 % female; Mage = 16.19, SD = 1.31, range = 13-21 years) to examine the development of embodiment during adolescence and to explore its (temporal) associations with identity, eating disorder symptoms, and eating competence. First, cross-lagged analyses revealed that embodi

Are trans diagnostic models of eating disorders fit for purpose? A consideration of the evidence for food addiction.

Explanatory models for eating disorders have changed over time to account for changing clinical presentations. The transdiagnostic model evolved from the maintenance model, which provided the framework for cognitive behavioural therapy for bulimia nervosa. However, for many individuals (especially those at the extreme ends of the weight spectrum), this account does not fully fit. New evidence generated from research framed within the food addiction hypothesis is synthesized here into a model that can explain recurrent binge eating behaviour. New interventions that target core maintenance eleme

The role of parenting in the relationship between childhood eating problems and broader behaviour problems.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has established that childhood feeding and eating problems are often related to other behavioural difficulties. Parenting practices have been implicated in both eating behaviour and broader behaviour problems. The aim of this study was to examine whether the relationship between eating and behaviour problems could be explained in part by parenting style and practices. METHODS: Seventy-seven mothers of 3- to 8-year-old children completed measures of children's eating behaviours, behaviour problems, parenting style and feeding practices. RESULTS: Eating behaviours

[Eating disorders in men].

Despite of being perceived as 'woman's diseases', eating disorders were described among boys and adult men. This article presents epidemiological data on anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder in men. The clinical presentation of eating disorders in men was described and compared with similar data from the female population. Moreover, a significance of selected risk factors, specifically those referring to men, was discussed. These are: the disturbance of body perception, personality traits and potential association of eating disorders with sexual orientation. Efficacy of

Factors that may influence future approaches to the eating disorders.

The past thirty years have seen dramatic changes in our approach to the eating disorders. These include marked improvements in the recognition and understanding of the disorders, and the reduction of the morbidity and mortality of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Bulimia nervosa itself, now the focus of so much attention, was described less than twenty years ago. While these gains, including those in the level of knowledge and appreciation by the public, have been transmitted to the benefit of patients, there remain significant difficulties in treating people with eating disorders. Critical resea

Bulimia nervosa: treatment and short-term outcome.

Fifty-six bulimia nervosa patients were treated by means of a behavioural approach and followed for at least one year after completion or dropping out of treatment. Outcome was encouraging in about half of the patients and several psychiatric indicators, such as duration of illness and response to treatment, were identified. The significance of the findings and unresolved methodological issues are discussed.

Male contributions during mating increase female survival in the disease vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti is a vector of medically important viruses including those causing Zika, dengue, and chikungunya. During mating, males transfer a number of proteins and other molecules to the female and these components of the male ejaculate are essential in shifting female post-mating behaviors in a number of insect species. Because these molecules are highly variable by species, and female post-mating behavior by species is also varied, behavioral assays testing the function of the ejaculate are necessary before we can develop control strategies targeting the mating system to reduce mosquito p

Stereotypy, flexibility and coordination: key concepts in behavioral functional morphology.

Animal movement and its muscular control are central topics in functional morphology. As experimentalists we often manipulate stimuli in a controlled setting or compare species to observe the degree of variation in movement and motor control of particular behaviors. Understanding and communicating the biological significance of these sources of variability requires a universal terminology that is presently lacking in the functional morphology literature. We suggest that 'stereotypy' be used to refer to the degree of variability observed in a behavior across trials under a given set of conditio
