BACKGROUND: In patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), metabolic demand varies dynamically across the disease course, while conventional indirect calorimetry in ECMO patients underestimates measured energy expenditure (measured EE) because a substantial proportion of gas exchange occurs across the membrane lung. Specialised protocols can overcome this limitation and measure EE directly during ECMO. However, no adult study has yet compared serial measured EE measurements with concurrent energy intake to assess feeding equipoise or to quantify the temporal variability that

BACKGROUND: Adequate nutritional intake is necessary for optimal growth and development of high-risk newborns, specifically preterm infants and newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). They face challenges initiating and advancing enteral and oral feeding, originating from mechanical dysfunction of gastrointestinal motility, which probably results from delayed or deviant maturation of the autonomous nervous system (ANS). This often leads to long-term feeding difficulties and failure to thrive. Antenatally, ANS development is influenced by various forms of sensorimotor stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Enteral nutrition is necessary when nutritional status is poor and oral intake is insufficient or impossible. Although it has been suspected to reduce spontaneous oral feeding, no study has formally assessed the influence of enteral nutrition on pediatric oral intake. The present study aimed to evaluate variation in oral feeding intake after enteral nutrition initiation, and to identify factors influencing oral feeding.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 149 pediatric patients from two French tertiary care hospitals, who received home enteral nutrition from 2009 to

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Gut immaturity leads to feeding difficulties in very preterm infants (<32 weeks gestation at birth). Maternal milk (MM) is the optimal diet but often absent or insufficient. We hypothesized that bovine colostrum (BC), rich in protein and bioactive components, improves enteral feeding progression, relative to preterm formula (PF), when supplemented to MM. Aim of the study is to determine whether BC supplementation to MM during the first 14 days of life shortens the time to full enteral feeding (120 mL/kg/d, TFF120).

OBJECTIVE: The main objective was to describe the impact of full oral feeding achievement in very low birth weight infants on weight, length, and head circumference, measured as the change in z-score from 32 weeks to discharge, the time at which full oral feeding occurs.
METHODS: This was a longitudinal retrospective observational study on infants younger than 30 weeks of gestational age, admitted to the Neonatology Unit of La Paz University Hospital, Madrid (Spain), from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. The infant's anthropometric characteristics (weight, height, and head circumference)

PURPOSE: Administering drugs and food to patients with swallowing disabilities via enteral tubes requires special skills. This task is a nursing duty and vital to ensure that they do this safely. An integrated program training nurses by a clinical pharmacist is likely to result in improved quality of oral drug administration via enteral feeding tubes. This quantitative study was undertaken to determine the efficacy of a clinical pharmacist educational program for improving nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) concerning administrating medication via feeding tubes.

BACKGROUND: Children from low socioeconomic households are at greater risk of obesity. As breastfeeding can protect against child obesity, disadvantaged infants are less likely to breastfeed relative to more advantaged children. Whether infant feeding patterns, as well as other maternal characteristics mediate the association between social class and obesity has not been established in available research.
OBJECTIVES: Examine the impact of infant feeding practices on child obesity and identify the mechanisms that link socioeconomic status (SES) with child obesity.
METHODS: Based on a national

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the influence of type and duration of infant feeding on adiposity rebound and the tracking of body mass index (BMI) from birth to 14 years of age.
METHODS: A sample of 1330 individuals over eight follows-ups was drawn from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study. Trajectories of BMI from birth to adolescence using linear mixed model analysis investigated the influence of age at which breastfeeding was stopped and the age at which other milk was introduced (binomial 4-month cutoff point). A subsample of linear mixed model-predicted BMI was used to d

BACKGROUND: Enteral feeding tubes for preterm or low birth weight infants may be placed via either the nose or mouth. Nasal placement may compromise respiration. However, orally placed tubes may be more prone to displacement, local irritation, and vagal stimulation.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the available evidence from randomised controlled trials concerning the effects of nasally placed compared with orally placed feeding tubes on growth and development, and the incidence of adverse consequences in preterm or low birth weight infants.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We used the standard search strategy of the

Malnutrition commonly occurs in cancer and adversely affects the quality of life and survival of patients. It is caused by a variety of factors, including decreased food intake, adverse effects from anticancer treatment, and wasteful metabolic processes. Over the past 2 decades, there have been major advances in methods and techniques of feeding patients with cancer and other disease. Special diets can be helpful in the treatment of a variety of conditions, some of which are outlined in Table 1. Enteral feeding is developing rapidly because endoscopic techniques have made it simpler to place f

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have explored the relationship between early feeding practices and early childhood caries (ECC), with a focus on oral hygiene, fluoride exposure, and sugary food consumption. However, the risk factors for ECC are diverse, and limited prospective studies have comprehensively examined the impact of various early feeding behaviors on ECC risk in preschoolers, including breastfeeding patterns, timing of complementary feeding, dietary diversity, sugary food intake, and micronutrient supplementation. Further research is needed to provide evidence for effective early interv

PURPOSE: Nasoenteric, gastrojejunostomy, and jejunostomy tubes are methods of enteral nutrition in patients with functioning gastrointestinal tracts who cannot maintain adequate oral intake. Current placements; however, may be complicated by redundant wire and catheter loops within the stomach preventing operators from optimal feeding tube placement and predisposing patients to feeding tube prolapse. This report describes the occlusion balloon reduction technique for salvage of malpositioned tubes and placement of new enteric tubes in the setting of redundant loops.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of the most important parasitic zoonotic diseases in the world. Domestic dogs are the main domestic reservoirs of VL in endemic foci of Iran. Various methods, including vaccination, treatment of dogs, detection and removal of infected dogs have different results around the world. General policy on control of canine visceral leishmaniasis is protection of them from sand fly bites. The aim of this study was evaluation of pour-on application of flumethrin on dogs against blood-feeding and mortality of field-caught sand flies.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia is common in infants born with critical CHD. Thickened liquids are often used to treat dysphagia, but associated risks limit widespread use among feeding specialists. This survey aims to assess dysphagia treatment patterns and thickened liquid use across paediatric cardiac surgical centres.
METHODS: A 24-question, cross-sectional survey. Convenience and snowball sampling methods were used to engage 52 paediatric cardiac surgical centres affiliated with the Cardiac Newborn Neuroprotective Network. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse and compare responses.

Feeding is a critical behavior that animals depend on for survival, and pathological alterations in food intake underlie disorders such as obesity and anorexia nervosa. To understand these disorders and their development in animal models, researchers must quantify food intake. Although conceptually straightforward, it remains a challenge to obtain accurate records of food intake in rodents. Several approaches have been used to accomplish this, each with benefits and drawbacks. In this article, we survey the four most common methods for measuring food intake in rodents: manual weighing of food,
