Two hundred thirty-nine patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were treated using interstitial laser coagulation (ILC or LITT; laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy), and the long-term results were determined. BACKGROUND: Obstruction of a major airway by tumour causes serious morbidity. There is still scope for a widely applicable, simple and effective treatment to provide rapid palliation.
METHODS: A fibreoptic bronchoscope prototype with an insulated inner sheath was used under local anaesthesia in 17 patients with locally advanced tracheobronchial malignancies. In this prospective study, fiberoptic examinations of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx were performed in 162 children with snoring and compared with similar examinations performed in 211 children without snoring. Our study aimed to determine a correlation between snoring and measured parameters of nasal and nasopharyngeal anatomy including the size of the adenoid tissue. From October 1984 to March 1992, 21 patients of Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen-IPSS, Lima, Perú, with esophageal achalasia were treated with pneumatic dilatation using a 3.5 cm diameter Rider-Moeller balloon. During a 25-year period 168 adults and 111 children in Copenhagen County were treated for acute epiglottitis. Four patients, two children and two adults died, of these the two children and one adult had a cardiac arrest on arriving at the hospital. Fifty patients with chemical burns of the esophagus were examined fibroesophagoscopically. All of them underwent local endoscopic irradiation by a copper vapour laser. Laser treatment promoted more rapid healing of the esophageal wall. No cicatrization-induced strictures were noted. Adjuvant local laser therapy is believed valid in management of esophageal chemical trauma.

The feasibility and efficacy of a fiberoptic blanket (Wallaby Phototherapy System) for the treatment of physiologic jaundice was compared with conventional phototherapy.
