Pre-treatment tumour lysis syndrome and acute renal failure in adult Nigerians with Burkitt's lymphoma: report of three cases and literature review.

Pre-treatment tumour lysis syndrome (pre-TTLS) is not an unusual clinical entity in high-grade lymphomas and lymphoblastic leukaemias. The overall incidence and frequency is unknown and to the best of our knowledge none has been published in Nigeria involving adult females with advanced stage Burkitt's lymphoma (ASBL). Three of the reported cases had pre-TTLS complicated by acute renal failure (ARF). The first two cases had a complete reversal of the ARF with aggressive supportive management and slow introduction of cytotoxic chemotherapy whereas the third case died of ARF due to delay in comm

Assets and health across the lifecourse: a framework for supporting migrant populations.

Migration is a defining feature of the 21st century. With >304 million people having left their country of birth and the number growing daily, understanding the needs of migrant populations will be a primary global concern in coming decades. We propose a framework for understanding the health needs of migrant populations across life stages that builds on asset-building and lifecourse perspectives. We highlight examples from the literature for three types of assets (financial, physical, and social) and across three life stages (childhood and adolescence, adulthood, and older age). This framewor

Research Progress on Financial Toxicity in Bladder Cancer Patients.

Bladder cancer, the most prevalent urinary system malignancy, is characterized by high recurrence rates and prolonged treatment. While therapeutic advances have substantially improved survival, they have also heightened the prominence of financial toxicity (FT)-a treatment-related economic burden that severely impairs the quality of life of patients and their families. This review synthesizes evidence on the prevalence, influencing factors, impact on health outcomes, and management strategies of FT in bladder cancer, offering insights for individualized clinical support and health policy refin

Barriers to Help-Seeking for Sexual Violence Among Married or Cohabiting Women in Ghana.

While sexual violence against women has gained attention in sub-Saharan Africa, research examining help-seeking remains limited. Scholarship on barriers to help-seeking among sexually abused married or cohabiting women is particularly lacking. We used the barriers model and held 15 in-depth interviews with sexually abused Ghanaian married or cohabiting women to examine help-seeking behaviors. Participants identified multiple barriers to help-seeking, including financial difficulties, lack of social support, and stigma. The results corroborate the barriers model's formulation of the challenges

Headache: a 'suitable case' for behavioural treatment in primary care?

Headache is a health problem with considerable impact at personal, social, and financial levels in terms of distress, disability, and cost. In the past, many studies have investigated the use of various behavioural treatment modalities for headache. Literature reviews consistently support the effectiveness of behavioural therapeutic approaches for the treatment of the most common primary headaches, namely migraine and tension-type headache. This article recommends that behavioural headache therapies should be developed, tested, and integrated into primary care practice, where most patients wit

The Effects of Social Support on Physical Functioning in Older African Americans: Longitudinal Results from the Baltimore Study of Black Aging.

INTRODUCTION: Compared with other racial/ethnic groups, African Americans have higher rates of chronic conditions and suffer a disproportionate burden of disability. We aimed to examine the effects of social support on physical functioning among older African Americans. METHODS: We analyzed a sample of 448 urban, community-dwelling, older African Americans (aged 48-98 years) from the Baltimore Study of Black Aging. Baseline physical functioning was collected between 2006 and 2008 (wave 1), and change in physical functioning was collected between 2009 and 2011 (wave 2), physical functioning wa

Recipients' views on payment of sperm donors.

The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how recipients viewed payment of sperm donors. The study was conducted in Belgium, where, as in many countries, sperm donors receive recompense for their time and expenses. Face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 34 heterosexual and lesbian couples who, at the time of data collection, had at least one donor-conceived child aged 7-10 years or who were undergoing donor conception treatment. Although participants commonly described the issue of financial compensation as something that did not really concern them, all supported t

Penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) had been performed for keratoconus in the right eye without complications until steroid drops were discontinued after 10 years because of persistent elevated intraocular pressure. The right eye experienced immunologic rejection and failure of 3 PKPs, 1 Descemet-stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), and a trabeculectomy with an eventual anatomically successf

Illness Experiences and Supportive Care Needs of Patients With Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

AIMS: To synthesise the holistic illness experiences and supportive care needs of patients with early-onset colorectal cancer across the entire disease trajectory. BACKGROUND: The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC), defined as colorectal cancer diagnosed in individuals younger than 50 years, has been steadily increasing. Patients are often diagnosed during critical periods of intimate relationship formation, family building and career development, when financial stability is also being established. This timing can create substantial challenges across multiple domains of qualit

Implementing a balanced scorecard-driven performance dashboard for governance in a public oncology centre in Morocco.

BACKGROUND: Cancer care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including Morocco, is constrained by fragmented information systems, non-standardised indicators and limited integration of clinical, financial and administrative data. These weaknesses undermine governance capacity, impair care coordination and delay evidence-informed decision-making. AIM: To co-design and implement a balanced scorecard (BSC)-based digital performance governance model in a public university oncology centre in northern Morocco. SETTING: The study was conducted at a public tertiary oncology centre integrated

Transforming faith-based food pantries in the South Bronx into multiservice health centers.

Could faith-based food pantries evolve into vital multiservice health centers? In the United States, the South Bronx is the poorest urban congressional district in New York State and experiences significant food insecurity alongside pronounced public health disparities. While food pantries provide nutritional support temporarily, they rarely address the complex social determinants of health that contribute to chronic disease. This paper examines the feasibility, opportunities, and systemic barriers associated with transforming faith-based food operations into integrated, culturally sensitive h

Service Engagement Among People Experiencing Homelessness and Mental Disorders: A Call for Person-centred Innovations.

In recent years, there has been increased support for the use of coercive policies to address the seemingly intractable problem of homelessness among people with mental disorders in North America. Although these policy approaches respond to a critical issue, rising rates of unsheltered homelessness, low service engagement and concerns about disruptive behaviors in public settings, they are unlikely on their own to be successful. To avoid coercive practices, there is an urgent need to consider alternative, person-centred approaches to promote service engagement among people experiencing homeles

The Unique Challenges of Older Informal Caregivers Living With HIV in the U.S. Deep South: A Qualitative Study.

As people with HIV live longer and healthier, it has become more likely that they will assume a caregiver role for their families and/or friends. Yet, there is a significant gap in the literature that older caregivers with HIV (OCWH) have not received attention from practitioners and researchers. To fill the gap, our qualitative study was conducted with OCWH ( N = 19) to explore various themes such as adjustment to caregiving, caregiving responsibilities, HIV and other health issues, support systems, caregiving outcomes, needs assessment, cognitive health, and the impact of COVID-19. Results i
