Thermally Stable Collagen from Black Carp (Mylopharyngodon piceus) Swim Bladder: Preparation, Structure, Rheological, and Functional Properties.

Fish-derived collagen can reduce the risk of disease transmission and has no religious or cultural restrictions. However, it has limited applications due to its poor thermal stability. In this study, black carp swim bladder collagen (BBC), classified as a type I collagen, was extracted. Amino acid composition analysis revealed that BBC had a higher proline hydroxylation rate of 39.57%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that BBC exhibited a complete triple-helix structure. The fractional viscosity curve and differential scanning calorimetry curves revealed that the thermal denatu

Evolving concepts in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis: from endothelial dysfunction to thrombus formation through multiple shades of inflammation.

Atherosclerosis is the anatomo-pathological substrate of most cardio, cerebro and vascular diseases such as acute and chronic coronary syndr … henotype. From this point, lipid accumulation with an imbalance from cholesterol influx and efflux, foam cells formation, T-cell activation, cytokines release and matrix-degrading enzymes production occur. Lesions with high inflammatory rate become vulnerable and prone to rupture. Once complicated, the intraplaque thrombogenic material, such as the tissue fa …

Scaffolds in the microbial resistant era: Fabrication, materials, properties and tissue engineering applications.

Due to microbial infections dramatically affect cell survival and increase the risk of implant failure, scaffolds produced with antimicrobial materials are now much more likely to be successful. Multidrug-resistant infections without suitable prevention strategies are increasing at an alarming rate. The ability of cells to organize, develop, differentiate, produce a functioning extracellular matrix (ECM) and create new functional tissue can all be controlled by careful control of the extracellular microenvironment. This review covers the present state of advanced strategies to develop scaffold

The interleukin-33-mediated inhibition of expression of two key genes implicated in atherosclerosis in human macrophages requires MAP kinase, phosphoinositide 3-kinase and nuclear factor-κB signaling pathways.

Atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disorder of the walls of arteries, causes more deaths worldwide than any other disease. Cytokines, which are present at high levels in atherosclerotic plaques, play important roles in regulating the initiation and the progression of the disease. Previous studies using animal and cell culture model systems revealed protective, anti-atherogenic effects of the cytokine interleukin-33 (IL-33). The action of this cytokine involves both the induction and suppression of expression of many genes. Unfortunately, the signaling pathways that are responsible for the

Nephrotic syndrome associated with ramucirumab therapy: A single-center case series and literature review.

Ramucirumab is a human immunoglobulin G1 monoclonal antibody that binds to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and is used for the treatment of metastatic or inoperable gastric, colorectal, and non-small cell lung cancers. However, ramucirumab can result in renal adverse events, including nephrotic syndrome, and the clinical course of this event is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the clinical course and pathological findings of patients with nephrotic syndrome after ramucirumab treatment. We evaluated 5 patients with malignancies (2 cases of gastric cancer and 3 cases of colo

Arterial Resident But Not Monocyte-Derived Macrophages Require Endothelial CSF1.

BACKGROUND: Tissue-resident macrophages (T-RMøs) accumulate at sites predisposed to atherosclerosis in the healthy aortic intima. T-RMøs require local cues for their maintenance, but the niche signals governing their persistence in arterial tissue remain poorly defined. Here, we identify distinct, spatially compartmentalized sources of CSF1 (colony-stimulating factor 1) that regulate T-RMø populations in the healthy aorta and during atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease. METHODS: Conditional Csf1 gene deletion (global, endothelial, arterial endothelial, and mesenchymal cell) or syst

The Emerging Roles of Chromogranins and Derived Polypeptides in Atherosclerosis, Diabetes, and Coronary Heart Disease.

Chromogranin A (CgA), B (CgB), and C (CgC), the family members of the granin glycoproteins, are associated with diabetes. These proteins are abundantly expressed in neurons, endocrine, and neuroendocrine cells. They are also present in other areas of the body. Patients with diabetic retinopathy have higher levels of CgA, CgB, and CgC in the vitreous humor. In addition, type 1 diabetic patients have high CgA and low CgB levels in the circulating blood. Plasma CgA levels are increased in patients with hypertension, coronary heart disease, and heart failure. CgA is the precursor to several functi

Acute Atherosis Lesions at the Fetal-Maternal Border: Current Knowledge and Implications for Maternal Cardiovascular Health.

Decidua basalis, the endometrium of pregnancy, is an important interface between maternal and fetal tissues, made up of both maternal and fetal cells. Acute atherosis is a uteroplacental spiral artery lesion. These patchy arterial wall lesions containing foam cells are predominantly found in the decidua basalis, at the tips of the maternal arteries, where they feed into the placental intervillous space. Acute atherosis is prevalent in preeclampsia and other obstetric syndromes such as fetal growth restriction. Causal factors and effects of acute atherosis remain uncertain. This is in part beca…

Prophylactic use of colchicine in preventing radiation induced coronary artery disease.

Radiation therapy is one of the primary treatments in fighting breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in the US. One of the dose limi … s, particularly neutrophils and monocytes. Neutrophils are fibrotic mediators, and macrophages form foam cells in the intimal layer of the vessel wall, leading to the build-up of atherosclerotic plaques. Platelet aggregation, both initially and upon plaque rupture, is also a culprit in exacerbating radiation damage. Colchicine is known to inhibit microtubule …

Pim-1L Protects Cell Surface-Resident ABCA1 From Lysosomal Degradation in Hepatocytes and Thereby Regulates Plasma High-Density Lipoprotein Level.

OBJECTIVE: ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) exerts an atheroprotective action through the biogenesis of high-density lipoprotein in hepatocytes and prevents the formation of foam cells from macrophages. Controlling ABCA1 is a rational approach to improving atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Although much is known about the regulatory mechanism of ABCA1 synthesis, the molecular mechanism underpinning its degradation remains to be clearly described. APPROACH AND RESULTS: ABCA1 possesses potential sites of phosphorylation by serine/threonine-protein kinase Pim-1 (Pim-1). Pim-1 de…

Redistribution of intracellular calcium and its effect on apoptosis in macrophages: Induction by oxidized LDL.

Calcium signaling, as a key to early step of the elementary intracellular events, has been implicated in controlling the development of atherosclerosis. We have shown previously that oxidized low density lipoprotein OxLDL-induced spatiotemporal increases of intracellular free calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) in the early formation of macrophage foam cells. Here, we evaluated how spatiotemporal redistribution of intracellular calcium occurs and would affect OxLDL-induced apoptosis. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and flow cytometry showed the time-dependent increase of mitochondrial Ca(2+) ([Ca(2+)](m)…

Uptake of type IV hypertriglyceridemic VLDL by cultured macrophages is enhanced by interferon-gamma.

Hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) from subjects with type IV hyperlipoproteinemia induce both cholesteryl ester (CE) and triglyceride (TG) accumulation in cultured J774 macrophages. We examined whether the cytokine interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), which is expressed by lymphocytes in atherosclerotic lesions, would modulate macrophage uptake of HTG -VLDL. Incubation of cells with HTG -VLDL alone significantly increased cellular CE and TG mass 17- and 4.3-fold, respectively, while cellular free cholesterol (FC) was unaffected. Pre-incubation of cells with IFN-gamma (50

A lung squamous cell carcinoma-associated membranous nephropathy patient free of tumor and membranous nephropathy after the treatment of surgery and radiochemotherapy following pembrolizumab: A rare case report.

RATIONALE: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is an autoimmune disease, which is classified into primary and secondary MN. Malignancy-associated MN (M-MN) accounts for about 10% of secondary MN cases. Lung cancer is the most common type of malignancy among M-MN patients. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) targeting programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) or programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) have showed promising efficacy and good safety in many types of solid tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer. To date, whether ICIs could be a treatment option for M-MN patients with PD-L1 expression and or hig
