Stakeholder perspectives on brain tumour care across rural-urban boundaries: a reflexive thematic analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To explore stakeholder perspectives on care coordination barriers and facilitators in regionalised neuro-oncology delivery, using brain tumours as a model for examining complex care pathways serving mixed rural-urban populations. DESIGN: Reflexive thematic analysis of semistructured interviews from stakeholders across the neuro-oncology care pathway was used to identify themes of care system strengths, barriers to effective service delivery and priorities for system improvement. SETTING: Regionalised Canadian health system serving one of Ontario's largest catchment areas, charact

Spatial distribution of HIV, HCV, and co-infections among drug users in the southwestern border areas of China (2004-2014): a cohort study of a national methadone maintenance treatment program.

BACKGROUND: A methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) program to curb the dual epidemics of HIV/AIDS and drug use has been administered by China since 2004. Little is known regarding the geographic heterogeneity of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among MMT clients in the resource-constrained context of Chinese provinces, such as Guangxi. This study aimed to characterize the geographic distribution patterns and co-clustered epidemic factors of HIV, HCV and co-infections at the county level among drug users receiving MMT in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, located in the southwestern b

Lung cancer across borders: From molecular epidemiology to precision treatment strategies.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, accounting for approximately 1.8 million deaths annually. Beyond this universal burden, lung cancer is profoundly heterogeneous, shaped by geography, environmental exposures, genetic ancestry, and unequal access to molecular diagnostics and modern therapies. Compelling evidence indicates that non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is not a single entity but a constellation of molecularly distinct subtypes whose distribution reflects regional carcinogens and population-specific susceptibilities. This Special Collection of

A comparative study of the proximity to nomadic travel routes and environmental factors on the occurrence of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, southwestern Iran.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most important health challenges in hyperendemic countries like Iran. Geospatial information systems-based studies have shown that factors, including land cover, altitude, slope temperature, rainfall and animal livestock, affect CL distribution in Kohgyloyeh and Boyerahmad province, southwestern Iran. However, the question of the influence of nomadic tribes, who travel with their goats and sheep, on CL is unanswered. We, therefore, investigated their role in CL epidemiology from 2008 to 2017 and compare them with geoclimatic factors. CL patient demogr

Ethnic-Racial and Spatial Inequalities of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Brazil: A Nationwide Analysis of Cumulative Notification and Mortality.

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) recognizes ethnicity as a structural determinant of health, yet ethnic-racial analyses of neglected tropical diseases remain scarce. This study investigated cumulative notification and mortality rates of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in Brazil from 2016 to 2025 according to the official Brazilian race/color categories. Data were obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN/DATASUS), and temporal and spatial patterns were analyzed. ACL showed marked geographic heterogeneity, with the highest cumulative notification rates co

Mountains, valleys, and rivers: The transmission of raccoon rabies over a heterogeneous landscape.

Landscape features may serve as either barriers or gateways to the spread of certain infectious diseases, and understanding the way geographic structure impacts disease spread could lead to improved containment strategies. Here, we focus on modeling the space-time diffusion process of a raccoon rabies outbreak across several states in the Eastern United States. Specifically, we measure the impact that landscape features, such as mountains and rivers, have on the speed of infectious disease diffusion. This work combines statistical modeling with spatial operations in a geographic information sy

Using the Hungarian Birth Defects Registry for surveillance, research and intervention.

The Hungarian Congenital Abnormality Registry (HCAR) was established in 1962 due to the growing public health importance of congenital abnormalities (CAs). The HCAR is a population-based registry; it collects and keeps permanent records of medical and personal information about malformed newborns and infants (notification of CAs Is mandatory for physicians) in order to develop baseline data for different types of CAs, to search for increases in the incidence of specific CAs, to provide rates, and identify geographic areas of concern for cluster investigation. In the last 25 years numerous stud

Leishmania/HIV co-infections: epidemiology in Europe.

As the AIDS pandemic spreads to rural areas and human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) becomes more common in suburban areas, there is an ever greater degree of overlap between the geographical distributions of the two diseases and, in consequence, an increasing incidence of Leishmania/HIV co-infection. Cases of the co-infection have been reported from 35 countries around the world but most have been recorded in south-western Europe. There has been a total of 1911 cases detected in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. The incidence of Leishmania/HIV co-infection is expected to continue increasing in

A tiered assessment framework for interregional flows of ecosystem services from migratory species.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has called for assessments explicitly accounting for interregional flows of ecosystem services (ESs) across geographic scales. An important type of interregional ES flow is generated by the long-distance movements of migratory species. Many migratory species provide important benefits to people, and due to migration dynamics, ESs provided in one location may be affected by habitat conservation, or lack thereof, in other locations. The state of the science on interregional flows of ESs from migratory species, h
