Stability of Individual Differences in Social and Nonsocial Visual Attention From Newborn to 14 Months.

Given the foundational nature of infant visual attention and potential cascading effects on later development, studies of individual variability in developmental trajectories in a normative sample are needed. We longitudinally tested newborns (N = 77) at 1-2 and 3-4 weeks, then again at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 14 months of age, assessing individual differences in their attention. Newborns viewed live stimuli (facial gesturing, rotating disk), one at a time, for 3 min each. Older infants viewed a 10-s side-by-side social-nonsocial video (people talking, rotating disk). We found short-term developmental

CLCN4 -Related Neurodevelopmental Condition: Characterization of Speech and Language Abilities.

Speech and language difficulties are a core feature of the CLCN4-related neurodevelopmental condition, but these have not been well described. Here we systematically phenotype speech and language in 13 participants (10 female, aged 1 year 10 months-41 years 10 months) with pathogenic CLCN4 variants (12 missense de novo, 1 premature stop codon maternal inheritance). Speech, language, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) methods were examined. Expressive and receptive language conditions were highly penetrant (12/13, 92%). Eight participants were minimally verbal but used a range

Sketches of chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) hoo's: vowels by any other name?

In human speech, the close back rounded vowel /u/ (the vowel in "boot") is articulated with the tongue arched toward the dorsal boundary of … panzees, while achieving comparable vowel-like qualities to the human /u/, may involve articulatory gestures that are beyond the range of the human articulators. The purpose of this study was to (1) stimulate further simulation research on great ape articulation, and (2) show that apparently vowel-like phenomena in nature are not necessarily indicative of …

LSTM-AE for Domain Shift Quantification in Cross-Day Upper-Limb Motion Estimation Using Surface Electromyography.

Although deep learning (DL) techniques have been extensively researched in upper-limb myoelectric control, system robustness in cross-day applications is still very limited. This is largely caused by non-stable and time-varying properties of surface electromyography (sEMG) signals, resulting in domain shift impacts on DL models. To this end, a reconstruction-based method is proposed for domain shift quantification. Herein, a prevalent hybrid framework that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a long short-term memory network (LSTM), i.e. CNN-LSTM, is selected as the backbone. The

Utilizing Electromyographic Video Games Controllers to Improve Outcomes for Prosthesis Users.

A study was developed for a limb-different accessible video game controller that utilizes an electromyographic sensor to control gameplay actions. Data was collected from 50 college-aged student participants. This biofeedback-based serious game trains users in a virtual capacity, through the visualization of muscle contraction, via the movement of the video game character. The training platform has been developed to accompany the corresponding electromyographic actuated prosthetic arm device, leveraging the same control scheme to enable the translation of hand gesture states. This study evalua

Customizable, reconfigurable, and anatomically coordinated large-area, high-density electromyography from drawn-on-skin electrode arrays.

Accurate anatomical matching for patient-specific electromyographic (EMG) mapping is crucial yet technically challenging in various medical disciplines. The fixed electrode construction of multielectrode arrays (MEAs) makes it nearly impossible to match an individual's unique muscle anatomy. This mismatch between the MEAs and target muscles leads to missing relevant muscle activity, highly redundant data, complicated electrode placement optimization, and inaccuracies in classification algorithms. Here, we present customizable and reconfigurable drawn-on-skin (DoS) MEAs as the first demonstrati

Collodion baby: A rare case report.

INTRODUCTION: Collodion baby "CB" is an extremely rare dermatological condition. Approximately 1 in 100,000 births are identified as infants with CB syndrome, including stillbirths (Dyer et al., 2013). A cornified substance replaces the newborn's skin, giving the body a varnished or parchment-like appearance. CASE PRESENTATION: Patient aged 30 years, third gesture, third pare, admitted for premature delivery of 8 months. After labor management, she gave birth 2 h after admission to the maternity ward of a living newborn female weighing 2400 g. The initial physical examination revealed large,

Virtual Reality-Based Intervention for Enhancing Upper Extremity Function in Children With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy: A Literature Review.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of motor disability in the pediatric population, with hemiplegia as one of the most widely seen subtypes of spastic CP. Although most of the children with hemiplegic CP are independent ambulators, deficits in hand function of the affected side remain a major concern of caregivers and children themselves. Children use the unaffected upper extremity to compensate for the weakness in the affected one, which consequently leads to the disuse of the hemiparetic upper extremity. Interactive virtual environments can enhance the activation of brain areas dur

Efficacy of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of hepatic abscess: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Liver abscess is a common cause of intra-abdominal infection and its treatment depends on the presentation. Laparoscopy, in addition to its classic benefits, has particular advantages in the management of liver abscess but its role is not well defined and studies done in that field are heterogenous. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the efficacy of laparoscopic surgery in the management of liver abscess. METHODS: We realized a systematic review and meta-analysis including studies published in the 20 last years. The primary outcome was the pooled prevalence of

Skeletal muscle atrophy: From mechanisms to treatments.

Skeletal muscle is a crucial tissue for movement, gestural assistance, metabolic homeostasis, and thermogenesis. It makes up approximately 40% of the total body weight and 50% of total protein. However, several pathological abnormalities (e.g., chronic diseases, cancer, long-term infection, aging) can induce an imbalance in skeletal muscle protein synthesis and degradation, which triggers muscle wasting and even leads to atrophy. Skeletal muscle atrophy is characterized by weakening, shrinking, and decreasing muscle mass and fiber cross-sectional area at the histological level. It manifests as

Dopaminergic modulation of the praxis network in Parkinson's disease.

Apraxia is a deficit in central motor planning impairing praxis functions such as gesture production or tool use that affects a substantial number of patients with advanced Parkinson's disease. We investigated the functional connectivity of the praxis network in patients in early stages of Parkinson's disease having an increased risk for apraxia and evaluated the influence of dopaminergic therapy on praxis abilities and related networks. 13 patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease (ON and OFF dopaminergic therapy) and 13 healthy controls completed a praxis sensitive functional MRI ta

Faciobrachial dystonic seizures expressed as epileptic spasms, followed by focal seizures in anti-LGI1 encephalitis: a video-polygraphic study.

The origin of faciobrachial dystonic seizures in anti-LGI1 encephalitis is controversial due to a lack of neurophysiological characterization. We report a 68-year-old man with subacute anterograde memory loss and involuntary faciobrachial movements. Video-polygraphic recordings disclosed repetitive events characterized by sudden, short contraction of the upper limbs and ipsilateral hemiface. A focal contralateral EEG slow wave from frontal or central electrodes was accompanied by increased muscle activity, often with a diamond-shaped configuration, on the orbicularis oris muscle, deltoid muscl

Perception drives production across sensory modalities: A network for sensorimotor integration of visual speech.

Sensory information is critical for movement control, both for defining the targets of actions and providing feedback during planning or ongoing movements. This holds for speech motor control as well, where both auditory and somatosensory information have been shown to play a key role. Recent clinical research demonstrates that individuals with severe speech production deficits can show a dramatic improvement in fluency during online mimicking of an audiovisual speech signal suggesting the existence of a visuomotor pathway for speech motor control. Here we used fMRI in healthy individuals to i

Measuring Early Communication in Spanish Speaking Children: The Communication Complexity Scale in Peru.

BACKGROUND: There is a great need in the United States to develop presymbolic evaluation tools that are widely available and accurate for individuals that come from a bilingual and/or multicultural setting. The Communication Complexity Scale (CCS) is a measure that evaluates expressive presymbolic communication including gestures, vocalizations and eye gaze. Studying the effectiveness of this tool in a Spanish speaking environment was undertaken to determine the applicability of the CCS with Spanish speaking children. Methods & Procedures: In 2011-2012, researchers from the University of Kansa…

Isometric evaluation of rotator cuff muscles in volleyball athletes.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in a group of semi-professional volleyball players, the function of the rotator cuff muscles with a new specific device. METHODS: We have studied 30 asymptomatic volleyball players, 15 females and 15 males, all right handed central or lateral spikers, with some specific functional tests. Every subject was evaluated by some common clinical tests to detect shoulder range of motion (ROM) and rotator cuff muscles strength in both sides. Athletes were also submitted to an isometric bilateral shoulder strength test, with a specific upper limb dynam

Clinical classification of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures based on video-EEG analysis and automatic clustering.

BACKGROUND: Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) or attacks consist of paroxysmal behavioural changes that resemble an epileptic seizure but are not associated with electrophysiological epileptic changes. They are caused by a psychopathological process and are primarily diagnosed on history and video-EEG. Clinical presentation comprises a wide range of symptoms and signs, which are individually neither totally specific nor sensitive, making positive diagnosis of PNES difficult. Consequently, PNES are often misdiagnosed as epilepsy. The aim of this study was to identify homogeneous groups

Dizziness in discus throwers is related to motion sickness generated while spinning.

While both discus and hammer throwing involve rotating movements resulting in the throw of an object, discus throwers sometimes report dizziness, a condition never experienced by hammer throwers. We investigated whether this susceptibility was related to the sensitivity of the thrower or to the type of throwing achieved. For the latter, we compared the determining features of gesture, gaze stabilization and projectile trajectory in both sports. A total of 22 high-level sportsmen in these 2 disciplines, half of them practising both sports, were interviewed. Slow motion video recordings of discu

Adult-onset tics associated with peripheral injury.

We report the cases of two patients with adult-onset, simple, nonvarying tic disorder that commenced after a peripheral (non-CNS) injury. The first patient is a 38-year-old man who suffered a right facial injury when his car fell off its jack while he was working underneath. Bilateral facial twitching began hours after the trauma and was characterized as a sniffinglike gesture. The movements waxed and waned, were suppressible, and were associated with a premonitory sensation. The tics remitted after 9 months but still recur occasionally under stressful situations. The second patient is a 34-ye

[Current surgical methods for the etiological diagnosis of mediastinal adenopathies].

The aim of this work was to determine the role of video-thoracoscopy and mediastinoscopy for the diagnosis of lymph node enlargement in the mediastinum of unknown aetiology. From January 1992 to December 1993, 26 patients were seen for surgical biopsy of mediastinal lymph nodes. Relative localization and the requirement for an associated gesture determined the choice between axial mediastinoscopy, parasternal scopy and videothoracoscopy. Mediastinoscopy was performed for peritracheal or right hilar (Baréty) nodes and parasternal scopy for anterior mediastinal masses. Videothroacoscopy was perf
