Dynamic stabilization for L4-5 spondylolisthesis: comparison with minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion with more than 2 years of follow-up.

OBJECTIVE In the past decade, dynamic stabilization has been an emerging option of surgical treatment for lumbar spondylosis. However, the application of this dynamic construct for mild spondylolisthesis and its clinical outcomes remain uncertain. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of Dynesys dynamic stabilization (DDS) with minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) for the management of single-level spondylolisthesis at L4-5. METHODS This study retrospectively reviewed 91 consecutive patients with Meyerding Grade I spondylolisthesis at L4-5 who were managed wit

Anterior segment, static and dynamic pupillography changes in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma using different types of topical antiglaucomatous agents.

INTRODUCTION: Glaucoma is a major cause of avoidable blindness and the most common type is primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Topical antiglaucomatous agents are the mainstay of treatment. There are many studies on the ocular effects of antiglaucomatous agents and these results may contradict each other. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of topical antiglaucomatous agents on the anterior segment and pupil in patients with POAG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The right eye of the patients using dorzolamide+timolol, brimonidine, latanoprost and the right eye of the control group were

Is Bridge Plating of Comminuted Humeral Shaft Fractures Advantageous When Using Compression Plates with Three versus Two Screws per Fragment? A Biomechanical Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) is one of the generally accepted surgical techniques for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures. However, despite the high bone union rate, a variety of complications are still prevailing. Moreover, the current literature lacks data comparing the anterolateral MIPO approach using dynamic compression plates accommodating different numbers of screws. The aim of this study was to analyze the biomechanical performance of comminuted humeral shaft fractures fixed with dynamic compression plates using either two or three screws per fragment

A comparative study of the neuromuscular response during a dynamic activity after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) not only causes mechanical instability but also produces proprioceptive deficit with an altered neuromuscular response. After ACL reconstruction, patients in general continue to complain of a feeling of knee instability. The objective of our study was to assess patient proprioception and its evolution over time by measuring the muscle latency time during a dynamic activity. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with an ACL tear following sports injuries were included in a prospective, comparative, matched controlled study. The study group con

Tibialis anterior tendon transfer after clubfoot surgery.

UNLABELLED: Recurrent dynamic and structural deformities following clubfoot surgery are commonly due to residual muscle imbalance from a strong tibialis anterior muscle and weak antagonists. We asked whether subcutaneous tibialis anterior tendon transfer effectively treated recurrent deformities following clubfoot surgery and whether the presence of structural deformities influenced the outcome. The patients were divided into two groups: Group I, dynamic supination deformity only (51 patients, 76 feet); and Group II, dynamic supination with other structural deformities (44 patients, 61 feet).

Hyaluronic Acid-Based Dynamic Hydrogels for Cartilage Repair and Regeneration.

Hyaluronic acid (HA), an important natural polysaccharide and meanwhile, an essential component of extracellular matrix (ECM), has been widely used in tissue repair and regeneration due to its high biocompatibility, biodegradation, and bioactivity, and the versatile chemical groups for modification. Specially, HA-based dynamic hydrogels, compared with the conventional hydrogels, offer an adaptable network and biomimetic microenvironment to optimize tissue repair and the regeneration process with a striking resemblance to ECM. Herein, this review comprehensively summarizes the recent advances o

fNIRS-Based characterization of adolescent depression using dynamic functional connectivity biomarkers in a verbal fluency task.

BACKGROUND: The human brain is a dynamic neural system with time-varying functional connectivity (FC) strengths between brain regions. Evidence indicates that adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit decreased average FC strength in cognitive tasks. Nevertheless, research focused on dynamic FC analysis in this population remains limited. This study aims to identify cognitive task-related dynamic FC features as valuable biomarkers to characterize clinical symptoms in adolescents with MDD. METHODS: A total of 83 adolescents with MDD and 78 age/sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) w

Oscillatory Bursts in Parietal Cortex Reflect Dynamic Attention between Multiple Objects and Ensembles.

The visual system uses two complimentary strategies to process multiple objects simultaneously within a scene and update their spatial positions in real time. It either uses selective attention to individuate a complex, dynamic scene into a few focal objects (i.e., object individuation), or it represents multiple objects as an ensemble by distributing attention more globally across the scene (i.e., ensemble grouping). Neural oscillations may be a key signature for focal object individuation versus distributed ensemble grouping, because they are thought to regulate neural excitability over visu

An imbalance between functional segregation and integration in patients with pontine stroke: A dynamic functional network connectivity study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on brain functional connectivity have revealed the neural physiopathology in patients with pontine stroke (PS). However, those studies focused only on the static features of intrinsic fluctuations, rather than on the time-varying effects throughout the entire scan. In the present study, we sought to explore the underlying mechanism of PS using the dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) method. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 58 patients with PS and 52 healthy controls (HC). Independent component

[The influence of cumulative dexamethasone, promethazine and dextran 70 used as protection against intraperitoneal adhesions on selected parameters of humoral immunity in women operated on for infertility].

One of the most frequent reasons of the intraperitoneal adhesions formation in young women is pelvic inflammatory disease and surgical operations of pelvic organs. The element of more complex activities against adhesion creation is to limit an inflammatory reaction in the area of operation by intraperitoneal and systemic pharmacotherapy. The system of activities put into practice in the Clinic of Gynaecology includes in the field of pharmacological prophylaxis a systemic and intraperitoneal use of dexamethasone and promethazine before, during and after the operation, in total doses respectivel

Molecular insights into the effect of graphene surface functionalization on the properties of PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes.

The effects of graphene nanofillers and their surface functional groups on the structural, dynamic, and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Graphene nanofillers, regardless of surface functionalization, had minimal influence on polymer chain conformation, packing, and Li+-PEO coordination. However, Li+ mobility strongly depended on both the presence of graphene and the nature of the surface functional groups. Graphenes bearing highly polar groups (e.g., -COOH and -OH) exhibited strong adsor

Decoding injury risk: Exploring the impact of asymptomatic hypermobility on lower limb injury risk factors in young female volleyball players.

Generalized hypermobility is associated with higher rates of musculoskeletal injuries, a trend also observed in volleyball. We aimed to investigate how asymptomatic hypermobility affects other suggested lower limb injury risk factors. Fifty female volleyball players (22 hypermobile, 28 non-hypermobile) were assessed using Beighton scores (BS) and lower limb injury risk factors based on the Landing Error Scoring System, single-leg dynamic balance, and Limb Symmetry Index (LSI) for single-leg hop and triple hop for distance. Spearman's correlations assessed relationships between BS and the risk
