Mixed-methods evaluation of an educational intervention to change mental health nurses' attitudes to people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and explore mental health nurses' responses to and experience of an educational intervention to improve attitudes towards people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Report findings are concordant with relevant EQUATOR guidelines (STROBE and COREQ). BACKGROUND: Attitudes towards people with a diagnosis of BPD are poorer than for people with other diagnoses. There is limited evidence about what might improve this situation. One intervention with reportedly good effect uses an underlying biosocial model of BPD. No previous intervention has

[Socio-epidemiological and cultural aspects of cutaneous leishmaniasis: conceptions, attitudes and practices in the populations of Tierralta and Valencia (Cordoba, Colombia)].

This article focuses on the conceptions, attitudes and practices of the inhabitants from four villages (veredas) in Tierralta and Valencia (Cordoba, Colombia), who have suffered from or are aware of the existence of cutaneous leishmaniasis. A mixed methodology was implemented based in a qualitative design using interviews and focus groups (n=45) and an epidemiological design which included applying the Montenegro test (n=251), uncovering suspected cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in humans, (n=5) and applying epidemiological surveys (n=409). Among the results, a lack of knowledge regarding the

Women's Experiences With Mammography Screening Through 6 Years of Participation--A Longitudinal Qualitative Study.

In this article we explore women's experiences with 6 years of mammography screening. Regular and repeated mammography screening is promoted as an important tool for disease prevention among women worldwide. The purpose of the present study was to explore how continued participation in screening influences how women perceive screening and breast cancer. We carried out focus groups with 24 screening participants in 2003 and 2009. Our analysis highlights that while women were excited about the examination in 2003, it was perceived as routine in 2009. Waiting for the results became easier over th

Access and Attitudes to HPV Vaccination amongst Hard-To-Reach Populations in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden of cervical cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programmes to prevent the disease will need to reach vulnerable girls who may not be able access health and screening services in the future. We conducted formative research on facilitators and barriers to HPV vaccination and potential acceptability of a future HPV vaccination programme amongst girls living in hard-to-reach populations in Kenya. METHODS: Stakeholder interviews with Ministry of Health staff explored barriers to and support for the uptake of HPV vaccination. A sit

Motives of Dutch persons aged 50 years and older to accept vaccination: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Elderly in several European countries are currently being vaccinated against influenza and pneumococcal disease, and various reasons have been put forward to expand these programs. To successfully immunize the older adult population, however, it is crucial for the target group to accept such interventions. This study aims to elucidate the motives of Dutch persons aged ≥ 50 years for accepting vaccination. METHODS: Thirteen focus groups were composed with persons aged 50 years and older. A semi-structured topic list with open-ended questions was used to guide the focus groups. The

[Current status of the treatment strategy for life-threatening hemorrhage in hospitals accredited by the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists (JSA), and practical use of "Guidelines for Action Against Intraoperative Critical Hemorrhage"].

The JSA and the Japanese Society of Blood Transfusion and Cell Therapy established "Guidelines for Action Against Intraoperative Critical Hemorrhage" in 2007. This guideline shows practical strategies for managing life-threatening hemorrhage. From 2007 to 2009, we conducted the annual survey with transfusion services of 384 hospitals accredited by the JSA. From the results of these surveys, we proposed some new strategies for managing life-threatening hemorrhage as follows: 1) It is necessary to establish a documentation of institutional procedures for urgent transfusion practices including an

Parents' beliefs about appropriate infant size, growth and feeding behaviour: implications for the prevention of childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: A number of risk factors are associated with the development of childhood obesity which can be identified during infancy. These include infant feeding practices, parental response to infant temperament and parental perception of infant growth and appetite. Parental beliefs and understanding are crucial determinants of infant feeding behaviour; therefore any intervention would need to take account of their views. This study aimed to explore UK parents' beliefs concerning their infant's size, growth and feeding behaviour and parental receptiveness to early intervention aimed at reduc

Life stories of depressed adult women in peri-urban Namibia.

The problems women in peri-urban Namibia are faced with are multi-dimensional. Like women in other communities they face the pressure of having a number of responsibilities, namely working, being a wife and mother, taking care of their families and perhaps caring for aging parents. Sometimes the pressure can be too overwhelming to manage. As a result, many women become depressed. Studies on depression among black African women in Namibia could not be traced. It was therefore considered to find out how women suffering from depression from this part of the world tell their life stories. The purp

Treatment-seeking practices for malaria in pregnancy among rural women in Mukono district, Uganda.

Understanding treatment-seeking practices for malaria in pregnancy is necessary in designing effective programmes to address the high malaria morbidity in pregnancy. This study assessed women's perceptions on malaria in pregnancy, recognition of early signs of pregnancy and of malaria, and the cultural context in which treatment seeking takes place in Mukono District. Focus group discussions (FGD) and key informant interviews were conducted among pregnant women, non-pregnant women, adolescents and men. The results showed that malaria, locally known as omusujja, was perceived as the most common

Matching strategies in cognitive research with individuals with high-functioning autism: current practices, instrument biases, and recommendations.

A meta-analysis was performed on the 133 cognitive and behavioral papers in autism using comparison groups in the 1999-2002 period. High-functioning (average IQ: 84.7), adolescents (average, 14.4 years) are largely dominant. IQ is the most frequent matching variable in use (51.2%). The instruments that are most frequently used to determine IQ or general level are Wechsler scales (46.9%), British Picture Vocabulary Scale (BPVS; 22.3%), and Raven Progressive Matrices (RPM; 16.9%). In order to determine if these instruments were equivalent when applied to individuals with pervasive developmental

HIV and serious mental illness: reducing the risk.

Persons with SMI residing in community mental health center group homes received an educational intervention program on HIV/AIDS. As with virtually all such approaches provided for this population, the intervention was generalized from programs used with other populations, for example, users of intravenous drugs, gay men, and adolescents. Assessment of pre- and postintervention knowledge indicated no increase in accurate information. Further, consumers were initially uncertain regarding their risk for HIV infection; this attitude, too, remained unchanged. The research design employed did not c

Using consensus methods to develop clinical practice guidelines for intensive care: the intensive care collaborative project.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practices or procedures based on the best available evidence are an essential resource within an intensive care unit (ICU). Maintaining the currency of a local clinical practice manual is challenging however, particularly in relation to the time required, other workload pressures and the availability of staff with relevant skills to interrogate the literature. The aim of the Intensive Care Collaborative (ICC) project was to use the synergism of group processes to develop state-based clinical guidelines for six common intensive care practices - eye care, oral care, endotrac
