Barriers and facilitators to condom use among People Who Inject Drugs in Georgia: A qualitative study guided by the COM-B model.

People who inject drugs (PWID) are at a heightened risk of contracting and transmitting HIV due to shared needles and unsafe sexual practices. Evidence on what shapes condom use among PWID in Georgia is limited. We conducted qualitative study among PWID recruited from two harm-reduction organizations in Tbilisi and Samegrelo between June-August 2025. Interviews were guided by the COM-B framework and analyzed thematically. Reduced sexual pleasure emerged as a dominant capability-related barrier to condom use. Knowledge of risks, benefits, and where to obtain condoms supported condom use, althou

Does transitional housing matter? The contributions of a housing program on homeless youth's outcomes.

Transitional Living Programs are popular interventions in Canada and the United States, for youth who are homeless or emerging from the foster care system. Some researchers have emphasized that an increased effectiveness of Transitional Living Programs is possible with an underlying philosophy such as Housing First or harm reduction. However, literature on the impact of these types of programs on homeless youth is limited. Given the lack of knowledge in this area, the aim of our longitudinal qualitative study was to understand the impact of a long-term transitional housing program, operating f…

Using Surveillance With Near-Real-Time Alerts During a Cluster of Overdoses From Fentanyl-Contaminated Crack Cocaine, Connecticut, June 2019.

In 2019, Connecticut launched an opioid overdose-monitoring program to provide rapid intervention and limit opioid overdose-related harms. The Connecticut Statewide Opioid Response Directive (SWORD)-a collaboration among the Connecticut State Department of Public Health, Connecticut Poison Control Center (CPCC), emergency medical services (EMS), New England High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), and local harm reduction groups-required EMS providers to call in all suspected opioid overdoses to the CPCC. A centralized data collection system and the HIDTA overdose mapping tool were used t…

Network Location and Risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission among Injecting Drug Users: Results of Multiple Membership Multilevel Modeling of Social Networks.

BACKGROUND: Despite the implementation of harm reduction program, some injecting drug users (IDU) continue to engage in high-risk behaviors. It seems that there are some social factors that contribute to risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission in IDUs. The aim of this study was to analysis the social network of IDUs and examines the effect of network location on HIV transmission risk using the multiple membership multilevel models. METHODS: From October 2013 to March 2014 we conducted face-to-face interviews on 147 IDUs. We asked participants to nominate up to 20 people whom t…

A call for compassionate opioid overdose response.

High dose and long-acting opioid overdose reversal drugs can precipitate withdrawal in people who are opioid dependent. Products recently brought to market for community use in the United States (US) have drawn international concern because of their increased risk of withdrawal. At the March 18-19, 2024, Compassionate Overdose Response Summit & Naloxone Dosing Meeting, a panel of harm reduction experts issued the following call to action: 1) people who use drugs should be directly involved in decisions regarding the research, development, selection, and distribution of opioid overdose reversal…

Barriers to calling emergency services amongst people who use substances in the event of overdose: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: North America is grappling with an ongoing drug overdose crisis. While harm reduction measures like take-home naloxone kits, and supervised consumption sites, have helped reduce mortality, other strategies to address this public health emergency are required. Good Samaritan Laws (GSLs) offer legal protection for individuals who report overdoses, yet people who use substances (PWUS) may still hesitate to seek help due to concerns about existing legislation. This scoping review explores barriers preventing PWUS from calling emergency services for overdoses, along with potential solut…
