Bicycle helmets are highly protective against traumatic brain injury within a dense urban setting.

BACKGROUND: New York City (NYC) has made significant roadway infrastructure improvements, initiated a bicycle share program, and enacted Vision Zero, an action plan to reduce traffic deaths and serious injuries. The objective of this study was to examine whether bicycle helmets offer a protective advantage against traumatic brain injury (TBI) within a contemporary dense urban setting with a commitment to road safety. METHODS: A prospective observational study of injured bicyclists presenting to a Level I trauma centre was performed. All bicyclists arriving within 24 h of injury were included.

Delayed synostoses of uninvolved sutures after surgical treatment of nonsyndromic craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis causes significant cranial deformity in the pediatric population. Open and endoscopic-assisted surgeries have led to increasingly successful management of this condition. Following surgical reconstruction, subsequent development of postnatal synostosis of previously patent sutures have been described and noted to be most frequently associated with multisuture synostosis patients with syndromic diagnoses. Very rarely, postsurgical new sutural fusion has been identified in nonsyndromic patients who initially present with isolated single-suture synostosis. The purpose

Evidence-based care of the child with deformational plagiocephaly, part II: management.

Non-synostotic deformational plagiocephaly (DP) is a common condition that affects as many as one in five infants in the first 2 months of life. The purpose of this article, the second in a two-part series, is to present a synthesis of the evidence related to management of deformational plagiocephaly and an evidence-based clinical decision tool for multidisciplinary management of DP. We systematically reviewed and graded the literature on management of DP from 2000 to 2011 based on level of evidence and quality. The evidence suggests that although many cases of DP will improve over time, conse

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during pregnancy: quantifying and assessing the electric field strength inside the foetal brain.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment option for severe mental illness during pregnancy. However, there is little knowledge about the amount of electric field produced inside the foetus, which is important to understand the effects of ECT on the foetal excitable tissues. Thus, in this paper, the electric field strength inside the foetus was computed and compared to the basic restriction of the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). A computational human phantom representing a 30-weeks pregnant female, four types of electrode placements and

Mucocutaneous blood contact: blood release behavior of safety peripheral intravenous catheters.

BACKGROUND: Protection against needlestick injuries has significantly improved in recent years thanks to so-called "safety devices." However, a potential drawback occasionally reported by users is a risk of blood splashing. If this blood comes in contact with the mucous membranes, it could lead to an infection. METHODS: Five safety peripheral intravenous catheter brands were examined in a laboratory test. To simulate the extreme situations, which may arise through human use, the introducer needle was withdrawn from the catheter at 2 different angles whereby an industrial robot was used to sim

Age-based risk factors for pediatric ATV-related fatalities.

OBJECTIVES: To compare and contrast characteristics and determinants of fatal all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes among pediatric age groups. METHODS: Retrospective descriptive and multivariable analyses of Consumer Product Safety Commission fatality data (1985-2009) were performed. RESULTS: Relative to 1985-1989 (baseline), pediatric deaths over the subsequent 4-year periods were lower until 2001-2004, when they markedly increased. Also, the proportion of vehicles involved in fatalities with engine sizes >350 cubic centimeter increased, reaching ∼50% of crashes in 2007-2009. Ninety-five perce

Incidence of otitis media in children with deformational plagiocephaly.

In the past decade, deformational plagiocephaly has seen a staggering increase attributed to the Back to Sleep Campaign of April 1992. With this increase, the possible clinical associations need to be fully understood. The anatomic changes seen include ipsilateral occipital flattening, ipsilateral frontal bossing, ipsilateral anterior ear displacement, contralateral occipital bossing, and contralateral frontal flattening [J Craniofac Surg 2004;15:368-372, erratum in J Craniofac Surg 2004;15:705; Fig. l]. Children with deformational plagiocephaly can have malpositioned ears affecting normal dra

Endoscopic treatment of craniosynostosis.

We are entering a new era of craniosynostosis repair. When detected early, endoscopic skull remodeling, combined with a postoperative external skull-molding device, gives an excellent long-standing reconstruction of the cranial skeleton. This technique diminishes the morbidity of the operation and decreases the overall cost. It does not replace classic plate and screw cranial vault reconstruction in the older patient but is a useful weapon in the armamentarium of the craniofacial surgeon for the treatment of craniosynostosis in the neonatal period.

Effectiveness of "Resuscitation Cover All" in Minimizing COVID-19 Transmission to Health-Care Workers during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious disease transmitted by contact, droplets, and aerosols. Front line health-care workers (HCWs), particularly emergency physicians and acute care providers, are vulnerable to being exposed while treating their sick patients. Despite appropriate personal protective equipment use, HCW gets infected, suggesting the need for multiple layers of protection such as barrier devices. METHODS: We aimed to determine the effectiveness of our novel "Resuscitation Cover All"(RCA) in reducing the exposure of HCW to simulated respiratory

Inequalities in the use of helmets by race and payer status among pediatric cyclists.

BACKGROUND: Despite nationwide campaigns to increase the use of helmets among pediatric cyclists, many children continue to be injured while riding without a helmet. To determine where programs and policies intended to promote helmet use should be directed, we surveyed a large national dataset to identify variables associated with helmet use. METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank was queried during the years 2007, 2010, and 2011 for children younger than the age of 16 years who were involved in a bicycle accident. Children were grouped based on whether they had a helmet on during the acciden

The effectiveness of helmets in bicycle collisions with motor vehicles: a case-control study.

There has been an ongoing debate in Australia and internationally regarding the effectiveness of bicycle helmets in preventing head injury. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of bicycle helmets in preventing head injury amongst cyclists in crashes involving motor vehicles, and to assess the impact of 'risky cycling behaviour' among helmeted and unhelmeted cyclists. This analysis involved a retrospective, case-control study using linked police-reported road crash, hospital admission and mortality data in New South Wales (NSW), Australia during 2001-2009. The study population was cycli
