Trigeminal nerve stimulation modulates brainstem more than cortical excitability in healthy humans.

Multiple sites in the central nervous system (CNS) have been hypothesized to explain the beneficial effects of transcutaneous trigeminal nerve stimulation (TNS) on several disorders. This work investigated the acute effects of TNS on the excitability of brainstem and intracortical circuits, as well as on sensorimotor integration processes at cortical level in physiological conditions. Brainstem excitability was evaluated in seventeen healthy subjects measuring the R1 and R2 areas of the blink reflex (BR) and its recovery cycle, with cortical excitability and sensorimotor integration assessed b

Anxiety-like, novelty-seeking and memory/learning behavioral traits in male Wistar rats submitted to early weaning.

The most frequently used animal models of early weaning (EW) in rodents, maternal deprivation and pharmacological inhibition of lactation, present confounding factors, such as high stress or drug side effects, that can mask or interact with the effects of milk deprivation per se. Given these limitations, the development of new models of EW may provide useful information regarding the impact of a shortened period of breastfeeding on the endocrine and nervous systems, both during development and at adulthood. Using a model of EW in which lactating Wistar rat dams are wrapped with a bandage to bl

Insulin resistance and autonomic function in traumatic lower limb amputees.

This study examined plasma insulin response to oral glucose load and autonomic nervous system activity in male lower limb amputees (n = 52) aged 50-65 years, compared to matched controls (n = 53). The groups had similar body mass index, blood pressure and plasma lipid levels. The amputees had higher mean fasting plasma insulin levels (18.4 +/- 9.7 (SD) versus 13.7 +/- 5.1 mU/l, p = 0.005) and during an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) (1 h levels 88.1 +/- 45.3 versus 62.1 +/- 42.7, p = 0.016) with similar plasma glucose levels, indicating insulin resistance. At baseline with the subjects sup

Effects of some antipsychotic drugs on cardiovascular catecholamine receptors in the rat.

1. Experiments were performed to determine the activity of four antipsychotic drugs on several catecholamine receptors that control the sympathetic cardiovascular responses in rats. 2. Chlorpromazine, thioridazine (0.03 and 0.1 mg kg-1) and haloperidol (0.3 and 1 mg kg-1) inhibited methoxamine-induced diastolic blood pressure increases in the pithed rat, whereas sulpiride (1 and 3 mg kg-1) was without effect. 3. Only sulpiride (3 mg kg-1) antagonized the pressor responses induced by xylazine. 4. Xylazine inhibited the heart rate increase induced by electrical stimulation of the spinal cord (C7

The gut-brain axis and inflammatory mediators in suicide and mental disorders with high suicide rates: a review of current evidence.

The interplay between gastrointestinal microbiota and mental disorders has recently been spotlighted. This review investigated discrete evidence suggesting associations between the gastrointestinal microbiome and inflammation with suicide. Fusicatenibavter, Hungatella, Veillonella, and Megasphaera have positive associations, but Clostridium, Butyricicoccus, Desulfovibrio piger, and Parabacteroides merdae have negative associations with suicidality. Additionally, lower species uniformity index, higher intestinal fatty acid binding protein secretion, lower zonulin secretion, higher interleukin-6

Therapeutic potential of nicotine in modulating oxidative and mitochondrial pathways in a C. elegans Parkinson's disease model.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most widespread neurodegenerative diseases that affect the central nervous system (CNS) in elderly individuals. As of right now, there is no recognized cure for this illness. Bioactive phytochemicals are a natural alternative that can help older persons postpone age-related cognitive diseases. This study attempts to establish whether nicotine, may diminish Parkinsonism in a model of Caenorhabditis elegans disease. This study analyzes the antioxidant and restorative mitochondrial dysfunction potential of nicotine and its related neuroprotective benefits by

Measuring Heart Rate Variability in Patients Admitted with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction for the Prediction of Subsequent Cardiovascular Events: A Systematic Review.

Background and objectives: Ischemic heart disease represents the leading cause of death, emphasizing risk stratification and early therapeutic intervention. Heart rate variability (HRV), an indirect marker of autonomic nervous system activity, was investigated extensively as a risk factor for adverse cardiovascular events following acute myocardial infarction. Thus, we systematically reviewed the literature to investigate the association of HRV parameters with mortality and adverse cardiovascular events in patients presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Suppressed prefrontal cortex oscillations associate with clinical pain in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a highly prevalent symptom experienced by patients across numerous rare musculoskeletal conditions. Much remains unknown regarding the central, neurobiological processes associated with clinical pain in musculoskeletal disease states. Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an inherited condition characterized by substantial physical disability and pain. FOP arises from mutations of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) receptor Activin A receptor type 1 (ACVR1) causing patients to undergo painful flare-ups as well as heterotopic ossification (HO) of skeletal muscles,

Asymptomatic versus symptomatic episodes in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation via long-term monitoring with implantable loop recorders.

BACKGROUND: The presentation of atrial fibrillation (AF) varies remarkably, from totally asymptomatic to symptomatic patients, while the same individual may present symptomatic and asymptomatic episodes. We aimed to identify electrocardiographic differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic episodes and to find parameters related to the appearance of symptoms. METHODS: Thirty consecutive patients (age 66.9±10years) with paroxysmal AF received an implantable loop recorder. Three types of episodes were defined: asymptomatic (ASx), symptomatic (Sx), and mixed asymptomatic-symptomatic (AS-Sx).

Hypertension and obesity after the menopause.

It is well known that in pre-menopausal women the incidence of cardiovascular events is lower than in men of the same age and that after the menopause cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in women become similar, if not higher, than that in men indicating that female sex hormones play a relevant protective role upon the vasculature. Among the cardiovascular risk factors, hypertension appears to be more prevalent in postmenopausal women than in men but the precise mechanism through which menopause favours the development of hypertension is still a matter of debate. The prevalence of obesity a
