"Sit like a lady": Gender-related sociocultural constructs and implications for anterior cruciate ligament injury risk in active women.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between sociocultural factors and three-dimensional (3D) hip and knee kinematics during low- and high-impact tasks (LIT, HIT). METHODS: Eighteen active cis-gender females/women between 18 and 30 years completed three trials of bilateral and single-leg LIT and HIT. Hip and knee kinematic data were recorded and analysed. Gender Role Socialization (GRSS) and Trait Self-Objectification Scales (TSOS) assessed sociocultural factors. The association between 3D kinematics and sociocultural factors was explored during LIT and HIT. RESULTS: Scores on the TSOS dem

Nerve palsy following total hip arthroplasty using trochanteric osteotomy and proximal femoral shortening in Crowe Type 4 developmental dysplasia of the hip: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a cornerstone intervention for Crowe Type 4 developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a severe form characterized by complete hip dislocation and acetabular deficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of nerve injury in patients undergoing THA via trochanteric osteotomy and proximal femoral shortening, with a secondary focus on the impact of prosthesis type (cemented vs. cementless). MATERIAL AND METHOD: A prospective cohort study was conducted in Iran on 62 patients (81 hips) with Crowe Type 4 developmental dysplasia of the hip between

Targeted hip abductor fatigue alters trunk and lower limb biomechanics during Single-Leg landing.

Fatigue of the hip abductor muscles may influence lower limb biomechanics and potentially contribute to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk. However, the effects of targeted hip abductor fatigue on trunk, pelvis and lower limb coordination during landing tasks remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate how targeted hip abductor fatigue alters the biomechanics of the trunk, pelvis, and lower extremity during single-leg landing (SLL). Twenty healthy male recreational athletes performed SLL before and after a targeted hip abductor fatigue protocol. Kinematic and kinetic data

Hip strength and range of motion: Normal values from a professional football league.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the normal profiles for hip strength and range of motion (ROM) in a professional football league in Qatar, and examine the effect of leg dominance, age, past history of injury, and ethnicity on these profiles. DESIGN: Cross-sectional cohort study. METHODS: Participants included 394 asymptomatic, male professional football players, aged 18-40 years. Strength was measured using a hand held dynamometer with an eccentric test in side-lying for hip adduction and abduction, and the squeeze test in supine with 45° hip flexion. Range of motion measures included: hip internal

Concurrent avulsion of posterior cruciate ligament and semimembranosus: a case-based discussion and literature review.

A 30-year-old male sustained a road traffic accident and presented to our trauma centre with injuries to his pelvis and right knee. Radiology showed closed fractures of the right posterior wall and posterior column of the acetabulum and PCL bony avulsion with posteromedial tibial plateau osteochondral fracture, without any distal neurovascular deficit. He was managed with surgical intervention for both injuries. His hip and knee healed well with a good functional range of motion at 12 months of follow-up. The aim of highlighting this case is that it underscores the rarity of concurrent PCL and

Preoperative arterial embolization of heterotopic ossification around the hip joint.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) around the hip joint is not uncommon following neurological injury. Often, surgical treatment is performed in patients with restricted motion and/or refractory pain due to grade III or IV HO according to Brooker classification. The major complication that occurs as a result of surgical HO removal is perioperative bleeding due to hyper-vascularization of the lesion. Here, we report a case of preoperative embolization in a 51-year-old male patient presenting with restricted bilateral hip range of motion (ROM) due to HO following a spinal cord injury. In the right hi

Simultaneous anterior and posterior traumatic dislocation of the hip. A case report with review of the literature.

The presence of anterior dislocation of the hip along with contralateral posterior dislocation of the hip in the absence of other major trauma is a distinctly rare injury pattern. We report such a case resulting from a motor vehicle striking a pedestrian, along with a review of previous cases. The patient was managed nonoperatively within 6 hours of trauma with an excellent final outcome and no posttraumatic complications over a 3-year follow-up. The possible mechanism of this injury is discussed.

Iatrogenic injury to the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery during intertrochanteric fracture fixation: a case report of guide pin-related vascular complication.

Vascular injuries associated with femoral intertrochanteric fractures are rare but can result in serious complications. A case of iatrogenic injury to the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery in a patient who underwent surgical fixation of an intertro-chanteric femoral fracture is presented. The injury possibly occurred during the creation of the entry point for nail insertion using a guide pin. Clinical symptoms emerged 10 days postoperatively and were successfully managed with percutaneous embolization, without major complications. This case highlights that pseudoaneury

Redislocation after treatment of traumatic dislocation of hip in children: a report of two cases and literature review.

From August 1998 to June 2005, we treated five children (age range 2-9 years) with traumatic dislocation of hip. The mean follow-up period was 4.1 years (range 1-8 years). There was acceptable reduction in all cases by single attempt at closed reduction. Two patients aged 2 and 3 years, respectively, had redislocation. Other complications like nerve injuries, avascular necrosis, growth disturbance, ectopic ossification and post-traumatic arthritis were not seen till the last follow-up (mean 4.1; range 1-8 years). Closed reduction is an effective treatment method for traumatic dislocation of hi

Hip Dislocation: Current Treatment Regimens.

Dislocation of the hip occurs only with high-energy trauma, and concomitant injuries are common. Early diagnosis and institution of treatment are necessary to obtain the best possible results. Treatment protocols include emergent reduction of the femoral head to reestablish perfusion, postreduction radiography and computed tomography to look for associated fractures and to judge the concentricity of the reduction, stability testing, and early mobilization. Open reduction may be required if a concentric reduction cannot be obtained in a closed manner. Despite appropriate management, posttraumat

Tips and tricks for ORIF of displaced femoral neck fractures in the young adult patient.

Femoral neck fractures in the young adult are a less common, but potentially functionally significant injury commonly occurring after high-energy trauma. The management goals of these injuries are the maintenance of a native hip joint absent avascular necrosis and nonunion. The primary determinant to this end is an anatomic reduction in displaced fractures with stable fixation. In this paper, the authors provide a set of technical tips and tricks to aid orthopedic surgeons in the surgical management of these injuries while reviewing the most recent literature available to inform clinical decis

[Electrophysiological mechanisms of spinal systems plasticity in people with dysfunctions of the locomotor system].

The reflex motor responses of some bilateral muscles of hip, shin and foot were evoked by percutaneous surface electrical spinal cord stimulation at the lumbosacral levels (T11-L3) in the patients with marked lumbosacral radiculopathy caused by spinal osteochondrosis and in neurologically healthy physically inactive individuals, as well as in healthy qualified athletes and athletes with knee joint injuries. There was used the technique of registration of posterior root-muscle reflexes. In the subjects with neurologic pathology and in the group of athletes with knee joint injuries the data demo

Complete femoral artery and vein avulsion from a hyperextension injury: a case report and literature review.

Blunt peripheral extremity vascular injuries are much less frequent than those of penetrating injuries, especially in the absence of significant musculoskeletal trauma. We present an unusual case of complete femoral artery and vein avulsion that resulted from a forced hip hyperextension and thigh abduction after slipping when a patient's foot became entrapped in a ladder. The patient presented with an acutely ischemic right lower extremity 8 hr postinjury, which necessitated immediate surgical exploration, temporary intravascular shunting, interposition grafting, and prophylactic fasciotomy. Midterm outcome and strength assessment after proximal rectus femoris refixation in athletes.

PURPOSE: Proximal rectus femoris avulsions (PRFA) are relatively rare injuries that occur predominantly among young soccer players. The aim of this study was to evaluate midterm postoperative results including strength potential via standardized strength measurements after proximal rectus femoris tendon refixation. It was hypothesized that the majority of competitive athletes return to competition (RTC) after refixation of the rectus femoris tendon without significant strength or functional deficits compared to the contralateral side. METHODS: Patients with an acute (< 6 weeks) PRFA who under

Closed reduction of the traumatic posterior-dislocation of hip joint using a novel sitting technique: A case series.

RATIONALE: Traumatic hip dislocation is a common joint dislocation. Delayed reduction has been shown to increase the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Most of the traditional methods must be performed under general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia to relax hip muscles. Anesthesia will prolong the interval between the injury and the reduction. PATIENT CONCERNS: 16 patients presented with hip pain and a leg shortened, flexed, internally rotated and adducted. DIAGNOSES: X-ray and CT-scan showed acute closed posterior dislocation of hip. INTERVENTIONS: Closed reduction of the traum

Multi-stage treatment for malunion and avascular necrosis of the femoral head following reverse oblique pertrochanteric fracture: A case report and literature review.

Femoral reverse oblique intertrochanteric fractures are successfully treated using intramedullary devices. Poor fracture reduction and the use of the inaproppriate implant can lead to implant failure and subsequent malunion or non-union. We present the case of a 21-year-old polytrauma female who, among other injuries, sustained a reverse oblique intertrochanteric fracture that was primarily operated on with the dynamic hip screw. After implant failure the patient developed malunion with bone defect and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Successful salvage of the bone stock in the inter- a

Traumatic bilateral knee dislocations, unilateral hip dislocation, and contralateral humeral amputation: a case report.

Bilateral traumatic knee dislocations are a rarity. We report a case of bilateral traumatic knee dislocations with concomitant right hip dislocation and complete traumatic amputation of the left, nondominant upper extremity at the level of the proximal one-third of the humerus. Angiograms revealed no evidence of popliteal artery injury. Orthopedic treatment consisted of immediate reduction of the dislocations and urgent revision amputation of the upper extremity. Staged, bilateral knee ligamentous reconstructions were performed on hospital days 24 and 29, respectively. Despite this constellati

Pyogenic arthritis of the hip following an occult open fracture of the pubic rami--a case report.

Most of the open pelvic fractures are associated with skin wounds of varying anatomy. Injuries of the pelvis, which only momentarily communicate with the exterior or into a hollow organ are often difficult to diagnose. We managed a patient with an occult open displaced fracture of the public rami that had probably torn the hip capsule and was not recognised on admission as the open wound was in the vaginal wall. It subsequently resulted in septic arthritis of the ipsilateral hip joint. Vaginal and rectal examination in grossly displaced pelvic fractures should be done to diagnose at an early s

Factors related to occurrence of hip fracture during a fall on the hip.

Recently, it has been shown that hip fractures can be effectively prevented by use of hip protectors. To determine who would gain most benefit from use of hip protectors, we conducted a study with the aim to clarify factors that contribute to the occurrence of fracture in individuals who fall on their hip. Hip fracture patients were compared with individuals who had fallen on their hip without sustaining a fracture. The study group consisted of 123 consecutive hip fracture patients aged 70 years or over (mean age 82 years, female 82 years and male 80 years). The control group comprised 132 ind

Effects of stimulated hip extension moment and position on upper-limb support forces during FNS-induced standing--a technical note.

This study explores the effects of active hip extension moment produced by electrical stimulation on the support forces the arms must exert through an assistive device during quiet erect standing with functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) in individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI). A static sagittal plane biomechanical model of human standing was developed to predict the effects of stimulated hip extension moment and sagittal plane hip angle on the arm support necessary to maintain an upright posture. Two individuals with complete thoracic SCI were then tested while they stood with co
