Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogels in Food Sector: Multi-Component Design, Stimulus-Response Mechanisms, and Broad Applications.

Hydrogels are endowed with exceptional hydrophilicity and biocompatibility by their network structure, while also exhibiting soft physical properties similar to living tissues, which renders them ideal biomaterials. Responsive hydrogels-particularly those constructed from multicomponent systems including proteins, polysaccharides, peptides, and polyphenols-have emerged as a frontier research focus owing to their tunable responsiveness and controllable functional properties. In this review, hydrogel response mechanisms were categorized according to pH, ionic strength, temperature, light, enzyme…

Iron-Responsive Deferasirox Release from Covalently Grafted Hydrogels on Microwires Extends Iron Chelation Time Scales.

Implantation of intracortical microelectrodes generates free iron species that exacerbate pro-inflammatory responses by producing reactive oxygen species through the Fenton reaction. This work reports a covalently grafted, two-layer poly(ethylene glycol)dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) hydrogel on polyimide-insulated Pt/Ir microwires for local delivery of the iron chelator deferasirox (DFO). The polyimide insulating layer was methacrylated to enable covalent anchoring of a PEGDMA550 interlayer, followed by a DFO-loaded PEGDMA3400 outer layer. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy of the h

Cell-body curvature reduces stall frequency to enhance Vibrio cholerae swimming and chemotaxis through hydrogels.

The swimming motility of the bacterial pathogen Vibrio cholerae is a virulence factor that aids in breaching the mucus layer. V. cholerae has a curved cell shape, and previous work demonstrated that loss of curvature decreases infectivity. Here, we investigate the mechanism by which curvature affects single-cell motility. We compared the chemotactic performance of wild-type curved cells and straight mutants. The two exhibit similar swimming properties in liquid and viscous solutions but differ significantly in mucus-mimicking hydrogels, where curved cells demonstrate an 86% increase in chemota…

Structurally optimized photo-crosslinkable casein-PEG hydrogels for enhanced encapsulation and functional stability of resveratrol.

Casein-based gel delivery systems often exhibit limited loading efficiency and functional performance under conventional formulation approaches. We present a novel UV-induced photo-crosslinking strategy for generating porous casein-polyethylene glycol gels, enhancing resveratrol stabilization and enabling controlled delivery during processing and storage. Structural characterization by FTIR and 13C NMR supported the formation of an enhanced covalent network via ester and amide linkages. Formulation optimization showed that 10% casein achieved a crosslinking degree of 93.32 ± 0.43% (p < 0.05),

Structurally preserved TEMPO-oxidized succinoglycan enables dual pH/temperature-responsive hydrogels with intrinsic antioxidant function.

A multifunctional hydrogel system with dual responsiveness to temperature and pH was developed by incorporating TEMPO-oxidized succinoglycan … analyses. TEMPO-SG was copolymerized with pNIPAM at various concentrations (0-2.0 wt%) to fabricate hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties. Rheological and swelling analyses showed that increasing TEMPO-SG content improved storage modulus, swelling behavior, and overall gel strength. The hydrogels maintained the thermo-responsive properties of pNIPAM …

Polysarcosine as a PEG Alternative Feedstock for 3D Digital Light Processing of Tunable Biocompatible Hydrogels.

In this contribution, a series of 4-arm and 8-arm star-shaped polysarcosine methacrylates (4-PSar-MA and 8-PSar-MA) macromers were developed through controlled ring-opening polymerization of sarcosine N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) followed by terminal methacrylation. Photorheological analysis of these well-defined macromers demonstrated rapid light-induced gelation and tunable viscoelastic behavior, with controllable swelling and compression properties, revealing topology-dependent mechanical tunability. The 4-PSar-MA resin could readily produce high-fidelity 3D hydrogel constructs via digital ligh

Hyaluronic acid-based in situ injectable crosslinked hydrogels as next-generation vitreous substitutes: A review.

Replacement of the vitreous body remains a major unmet need in vitreoretinal surgery. Currently used tamponade agents, such as gases and silicone oils, provide mechanical support but fail to replicate the optical, viscoelastic, and biological functions of the native vitreous and are associated with significant clinical limitations. Injectable hydrogels have therefore emerged as promising alternatives, particularly systems that undergo network formation directly within the vitreous cavity. This review provides a focused, concept-driven analysis of in situ forming hydrogel vitreous substitutes, …

Fabrication of Mechanically Adjustable Silk Fibroin-Based Hydrogels with Excellent Biocompatibility for Skin Wound Repair.

Silk fibroin (SF) hydrogels have attracted widespread attention as promising wound dressings owing to their excellent biocompatibility and tunable structure. However, constructing SF hydrogels with easily adjustable mechanical properties and clarified structure-function relationships remains challenging. Herein, we fabricated a series of mechanically tunable SF hydrogels using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a biocompatible crosslinker. The epoxy groups of EGDE readily react with the nucleophilic amino and hydroxyl groups on SF chains via ring-opening reactions, forming stable coval…

Macrophages Intracellularly Gelated With Bioactive Hydrogels for Synergistic Neutralization, Eradication, and Osteopromotion in Periodontitis Treatment.

Conventional periodontitis therapy is limited by the lack of an all-in-one material with the desired functions of toxin neutralization, pathogen eradication, and osteopromotion. Exploiting the innate capacity of macrophages to recognize and neutralize pathological stimuli, this study develops novel engineered macrophage-based materials: phytate/Zn2 +-loaded gelated macrophages (PZ-GMs). These materials are fabricated at room temperature by polymerizing polycationic hydrogels and loading phytate/Zn2 + into live macrophages, innovatively integrating the natural immune neutralization function of …

Thermally Triggered Self-Reinforcing Double-Network Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Fracture Sealing Under Cyclic Steam Exposure.

Hydrogels used for fracture sealing during heavy-oil thermal recovery are repeatedly exposed to high-temperature steam, dehydration, pressure disturbance, and cooling, conditions that often lead to progressive network deterioration and loss of sealing efficiency. To address this limitation, a thermally triggered self-reinforcing covalent-physical double-network nanocomposite hydrogel was developed by combining a sparse MBAA-crosslinked P(NaAMPS-co-NVP-co-AM) covalent scaffold with a reversible Laponite-mediated physical network. The material response was systematically evaluated through cyclic…

Highly Selective and Visual Detection of Co2+ Using CDs/MOF-Eu Dual-Wavelength Fluorescent Hydrogels.

Contamination by the heavy metal cobalt ion (Co2+) poses a serious threat to the ecological environment and human safety. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop a new method for detecting Co2+ that combines rapid response, high sensitivity and high selectivity. In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were prepared using urea and citric acid as raw materials. These were mixed with MOF-Eu and incorporated into a PA hydrogel constructed from sodium alginate (SA) and acrylamide (PAM), resulting in the successful preparation of a PA-CDs@MOF-Eu composite hydrogel with dual-wavelength independent

Bioadhesive Alginate/Chitosan Hydrogels for Sustained Probiotic Delivery and Enhanced Antibacterial Treatment of Oral Ulcers.

Recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) are highly prevalent oral mucosal lesions, while current therapies are limited by short residence time and poor efficacy in the dynamic oral environment. Probiotics such as Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) exhibit antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and tissue-repair functions; however, their direct application is restricted by low stability and retention in the oral cavity. In this study, L. reuteri-loaded sodium alginate/chitosan composite hydrogels were developed via ionic crosslinking as a bioadhesive platform for local delivery. The hydrogels exhibited well-…

Low-solid content cellulose nanofiber/mixed-linkage glucan hydrogels for drug delivery and nanoparticle encapsulation.

It is well established that polymer concentration significantly influences drug diffusion. However, achieving mechanically stable networks at low solid content while maintaining sustained and controlled release remains challenging. In this work, we prepared hydrogels composed of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TCNF) and mixed-linkage β-glucan (MLG) at total solid contents of 0.4% (w/w). Rheological characterization confirmed solid-like viscoelastic behavior, while FTIR, WAXS, and SEM analyses supported the formation of a physically crosslinked nanofibrillar network with a highly porous st…

Multifunctional Catechol-Functionalized Cellulose Hydrogels for the Minimally Invasive Treatment of Acute Optic Nerve Injuries.

Oxidative stress-induced retinal ganglion cell degeneration is a major pathological feature of acute optic nerve injury, yet current posterior-segment therapies are limited by poor local retention and repeated invasive administration. Here, we developed an injectable catechol-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel, CMCDA, as a bioadhesive and antioxidative intravitreal platform. Through dopamine grafting and oxidative crosslinking, CMCDA exhibited shear-thinning injectability, self-healing behavior, wet-tissue adhesion, controlled biodegradability, and good biocompatibility. Mussel Adhesive Protein/Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogels for EGF Delivery and MRSA-Infected Diabetic Wound Repair.

Diabetic foot ulceration is a severe and common chronic complication of diabetes, accompanied by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, persistent bacterial infection, prolonged inflammation, and insufficient angiogenesis. Traditional single-function wound dressings fail to simultaneously resolve these pathological barriers, leading to unsatisfactory healing outcomes. In this study, we developed a multifunctional composite hydrogel (E/MGel) by introducing mussel adhesive protein (MAP) into methacrylated hyaluronic acid (mHA) to construct an antibacterial and antioxidant delivery
