The evaluation of tumours located in the posterior part of the third ventricle or pineal region is achieved best by magnet resonance imaging … cell tumour must be suspected. We recommend initial chemotherapy with a combination of Vinblastine, Ifosfamide and Cis-platin without biopsy to avoid tumour seeding. After the "markers" are normalized operative removal of the residual tumour and radiotherapy should be carried out. In a series of 13 children operated on for pineal region tumours a rigid neuro …

BACKGROUND: Outcomes for patients with high-risk diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated with R-CHOP chemotherapy are suboptimal but, … osphamide, vincristine, doxorubicin and high-dose methotrexate) alternating with IVAC chemotherapy (ifosfamide, etoposide and high-dose cytarabine) plus eight doses of rituximab. Response was assessed by computed tomography after completing all four cycles of chemotherapy. The primary end point was 2-year progression-free survival (PFS).

BACKGROUND Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma that usually arises in the abdomen or pelvis in young boys and adolescents. Presenting symptoms include abdominal pain and ascites. However, DSRCT is often disseminated throughout the peritoneal cavity at diagnosis, and the prognosis is poor. This report is of a case of DSRCT in a 23-year-old Jordanian woman who presented with abdominal pain. CASE REPORT An unmarried 23-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain. On examination, she was found to have ascites. A computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen an

Although childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemias are of good prognosis than leukemias of adulthood, some chromosomal abnormalities may have negative effects on their prognosis. Inverted duplication (1q) is a chromosomal abnormality with negative effect on outcome of Burkitt leukemia and lymphomas. We report a case of CD20 Burkitt leukemia with inverted duplication (1q) mutation, who had an early relapse during NHL-BFM 95 treatment. Two courses of ICE-rituximab treatment were administered after relapse and a successful HLA-full match bone marrow transplantation was carried out. He is in follow-

Thymic hyperplasia occurs in a small proportion of patients receiving chemotherapy for various malignancies. It likely results from an immunologic rebound phenomenon. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography is an important tool for staging malignant neoplasms. We report a case of rebound thymic hyperplasia manifesting as a hypermetabolic mass on fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography after pneumonectomy and chemotherapy for primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma. We highlight the importance of recognizing the phenomenon of rebound thymic hyp

Limited data are available regarding radiation therapy in pediatric pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB). We report the case of a 3-year-old girl with type II PPB successfully treated with trimodality therapy including multiagent chemotherapy, resection, and whole pleura radiation therapy. While longer follow-up is required to confirm ultimate local tumor control and long-term post-treatment sequelae, currently 3.5 years following therapy, she is well, without recurrent disease or observable toxicity. The goal of this report is to add our experience to the literature regarding PPB, its management, a

Non-weight-bearing, pre- and postsurgical immobilization, neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy are known to act on bone turnover, causing osteoporosis over short and long time periods. Treatment of fracture insurgence is very difficult because it really depends on being able to choose the right time (i.e., when immunodeficiency is less important). We report a case of spontaneous neck femur fracture during adjuvant chemotherapy in a young girl treated with resection and prosthesis reconstruction for distal femur osteosarcoma. Possible prevention and the correct approach and surgical timing are

A 44-year-old man suspected of having transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the prostate was referred to our hospital. He had a painful semi-erect penis at his first visit. Then needle biopsy of the corpus cavernosum histologically revealed metastatic TCC. CT of the pelvis showed bilateral ureteral obstruction caused by the advanced tumor but no lymph node swelling was found. Under the diagnosis of prostatic TCC with penile metastasis, bilateral percutaneous nephrostomy followed by two courses of combination chemotherapy (IFEP regimen) was carried out, which resulted in the disappearance of pri

BACKGROUND Extranodal lymphoma of the paranasal sinuses is a rare clinical entity seen in only 5-8% of extranodal lymphomas of the head and neck. Nasal natural killer/T cell lymphoma (Nasal NKTCL), which is a subtype of peripheral T cell lymphoma, constitutes about 1.4% of all lymphomas. NKTCL is usually diagnosed at a late stage because it presents with nonspecific symptoms in the early stages. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 25-year-old male patient who presented with periorbital swelling treated as fungal sinusitis but proven to have NKTCL. We review the literature and discuss the clini

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced osteosarcomas are a recognized complication of radiation therapy. Owing to the fact that it is rare, publications on radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the skull base are limited to a small series and some case reports.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a rare case of a patient with a skull base radiation-induced osteosarcoma treated 11 years before with ionizing radiation for an undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx. The patient was treated with chemotherapy alone, but he died after the third cycle.
CONCLUSIONS: Radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the skull b

Objectives To investigate the clinical characteristics, survival and prognosis of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) and head extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP). Methods Forty MM patients were enrolled in the study (18 men, 22 women; median age, 55 years). Results Median overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were 24 (5-78) months and 17 (2-36) months, respectively. The 2-, 3- and 5-year OS rates were 51%, 20% and 7%, respectively. The 2-year PFS was 15%. Median OS and PFS in patients administered velcade were 26 (18-50) and 22.5 (5-78) months, compared with 20 (10-30) and 1

A decision-theoretic framework is proposed for designing sequential dose-finding trials with multiple outcomes. The optimal strategy is solvable theoretically via backward induction. However, for dose-finding studies involving k doses, the computational complexity is the same as the bandit problem with k-dependent arms, which is computationally prohibitive. We therefore provide two computationally compromised strategies, which is of practical interest as the computational complexity is greatly reduced: one is closely related to the continual reassessment method (CRM), and the other improves CR

Ewing sarcoma is a relatively uncommon malignant bone neoplasm that usually occurs in children and young adults and involves the major long bones, pelvis, and ribs. Primary diaphragmatic Ewing sarcoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only three cases of primary Ewing sarcoma of the diaphragm have been reported. A 12-year-old girl presented spontaneous occurrences of the right hemothorax. After drainage, a roentgenogram film, computed tomography, ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance image showed a giant mass on the right diaphragm. Primary diaphragmatic tumor was resected tot

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL) account for about 10% of all lymphomas in Western countries, respond poorly to therapy, and have short survival with no sustained remission. Furthermore, the complication of hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) sometimes makes the prognosis of this disease extremely worse. We report here a case of PTCL with an angiocentric growth pattern complicated with HPS successfully treated by high-dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. Our case suggests this approach is an excellent candidate for the treatment of this disease.
