Dynamic cerebral autoregulation in postpartum individuals with and without preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Changes in dynamic cerebral autoregulation (DCA) may contribute to postpartum maternal cerebrovascular complications after preeclampsia. We hypothesized that DCA is impaired in the first week postpartum after diagnosis of preeclampsia with severe features (PSF), compared with normotensive postpartum individuals and healthy non-pregnant female volunteers. METHODS: We measured DCA within seven days after delivery in individuals with and without PSF, using transcranial Doppler and continuous arterial blood pressure monitoring with finger plethysmography. Historical data from 28 healt

The Timing of the Maternal Recognition of Pregnancy Is Specific to Individual Mares.

The present experiment aimed at determining whether the timing of the maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) was specific to individual mar … between the mares but was repeatable in each individual. The factors and mechanisms underlying the individuality in the timing of MRP were not determined and warrant further study.

Long-Term Outcomes for Individuals With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The study's primary aims were to describe the long-term speech outcomes for adolescents and young adults with a history of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) and to examine the association of persistent speech sound errors with measures of literacy skills, phonological processing, motor speech production, and parent report of early motor difficulty. METHOD: Data from a large longitudinal 25-year study were used to explore outcomes for 32 individuals with a history of CAS, ages 12;6 (years;months) to 25 years (M = 17.4, SD = 4.7). Persistent and nonpersistent groups were compared on de

The effect of manual movements on stuttering in individuals with down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Stuttering may disrupt the speech of individuals with Down syndrome (DS), but standard stuttering therapies may be less adapted to these clients' needs. This study examined if their strength in gesture use can lead to the development of a new stuttering therapy. METHOD: Eighteen individuals with DS who stutter participated in an experimental task. During this task, they produced sentences in three different conditions: once without the ability to use gestures, once while moving the mouth of a hand puppet synchronous with their speech, and once while making beat gestures along their s

Trends in Cardiovascular Health Counseling Among Postpartum Individuals.

IMPORTANCE: Poor prepregnancy cardiovascular health (CVH) and adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) are key risk factors for subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) in birthing adults. The postpartum visit offers an opportunity to promote CVH among at-risk individuals. OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence, predictors, and trends in self-reported CVH counseling during the postpartum visit. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Serial, cross-sectional analysis of data from 2016-2020 from the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a nationally representative, population-based survey. The p

Contrast Increment and Decrement Processing in Individuals With and Without Diabetes.

PURPOSE: Animal models suggest that ON retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) may be more vulnerable to diabetic insult than OFF cells. Using three psychophysical tasks to infer the function of ON and OFF RGCs, we hypothesized that functional responses to contrast increments will be preferentially affected in early diabetes mellitus (DM) compared to contrast decrement responses. METHODS: Fifty-two people with DM (type 1 or type 2) (mean age = 34.8 years, range = 18-60 years) and 48 age-matched controls (mean age = 35.4 years, range = 18-60 years) participated. Experiment 1 measured contrast sensitivit

Behavioral and Electrocortical Response to a Sensorimotor Conflict in Individuals with Fibromyalgia.

People with fibromyalgia have been shown to experience more somatosensory disturbances than pain-free controls during sensorimotor conflicts (i.e., incongruence between visual and somatosensory feedback). Sensorimotor conflicts are known to disturb the integration of sensory information. This study aimed to assess the cerebral response and motor performance during a sensorimotor conflict in people with fibromyalgia. Twenty participants with fibromyalgia and twenty-three pain-free controls performed a drawing task including visual feedback that was either congruent with actual movement (and thu

Assessing Variation in the Individual-Level Impacts of a Multihost Pathogen.

Most pathogens infect more than one host species, and given infection, the individual-level impact they have varies among host species. Nevertheless, variation in individual-level impacts of infection remains poorly characterised. Using the impactful and host-generalist ectoparasitic mite Sarcoptes scabiei (causing sarcoptic mange), we assessed individual-level variation in pathogen impacts by (1) compiling all documented individual-level impacts of S. scabiei across free-living host species, (2) quantifying and ranking S. scabiei impacts among host species, and (3) evaluating factors associat

Stroke Subtype Among Individuals With Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: It is widely accepted that there is a stepwise increase in the risk of acute ischemic stroke with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, whether the risk of specific ischemic stroke subtypes varies with CKD remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between ischemic stroke subtypes (cardioembolic, arterial, lacunar, and other) classified using the Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) and CKD stage. DESIGN: retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Ontario, Canada. PATIENTS: A total of 17 434 adults with an acute ischemic stroke in Ontario, Canada between A

Use test with l-carvone in toothpaste on sensitized individuals.

BACKGROUND: The mint flavour carvone (l-carvone) is considered a weak contact allergen. However, contact allergy to carvone is more prevalent in patients with oral lichen planus or oral lichenoid lesions (OLP/OLL). OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate how carvone affects sensitized individuals through a use test with toothpaste containing carvone. Non-flavoured toothpaste served as control. METHODS: Subjects were patch tested prior to the use test-14 subjects allergic to carvone (11 with OLP/OLL), 20 subjects with OLP/OLL and 3 healthy controls. The month-long use test comprised of using to

Exercises With Optimal Scapulothoracic Muscle Activation for Individuals With Paraplegia.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with paraplegia and coexisting trunk and postural control deficits rely on their upper extremities for function, which increases the risk of shoulder pain. A multifactorial etiology of shoulder pain includes "impingement" of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, long head of the biceps tendons, and/or subacromial bursa resulting from anatomic abnormalities, intratendinous degeneration, and altered scapulothoracic kinematics and muscle activation. Targeting serratus anterior (SA) and lower trapezius (LT) activation during exercise, as part of a comprehensive plan, minimizes

Reimbursing incarcerated individuals for participation in research: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about global practices regarding the provision of reimbursement for the participation of people who are incarcerated in research. To determine current practices related to the reimbursement of incarcerated populations for research, we aimed to describe international variations in practice across countries and carceral environments to help inform the development of more consistent and equitable practices. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review by searching PubMed, Cochrane library, Medline, and Embase, and conducted a grey literature search for English- and French-l

A Case of Concurrent Infection With Syphilis and Monkeypox in an Immunosuppressed Individual.

Monkeypox and syphilis are two distinct infectious diseases that can cause severe health complications in infected patients and can share clinical manifestations, making their simultaneous occurrence challenging to diagnose and manage. Here, we present a case report of a patient with the coinfection of monkeypox and syphilis, highlighting the clinical presentation and treatment considerations. This case underlines the importance of considering coinfections in patients presenting with atypical clinical manifestations and risk factors. This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and p

QT Ratio: A simple solution to individual QT correction.

Preclinical risk assessment of drug-induced arrhythmias is critical for drug development and relies on heart rate corrected QT interval (QT) prolongation as a biomarker for arrhythmia risk. However, the methods used to correct QT vary in complexity and don't account for all changes in the QT-rate relationship. Thus, we developed the novel Ratio QT correction method which characterizes that relationship at each timepoint using the ratio between QT, adjusted for a species-specific constant, and rate (RR interval). This ratio represents the slope between the intercept and the datapoint being corr

Individualized surgical treatment for patients with tumours of the cervicothoracic junction.

OBJECTIVES: The cervicothoracic junction is a special section that connects the neck, thoracic cavity, mediastinum and axilla. Tumours in the region often invade or compress surrounding tissues and organs, which makes the surgical treatment difficult. METHODS: A retrospective analysis involving 69 patients with tumours at the cervicothoracic junction. Clinical data with regard to manifestation, surgical approach, resection degree, outcome and pathological types were collected. RESULTS: A total of 48 cases of asymptomatic patients and 21 cases of patients with ≥1 clinical manifestation were e

Longitudinal change in ATN biomarkers in cognitively normal individuals.

BACKGROUND: Biomarkers for amyloid, tau, and neurodegeneration (ATN) have predictive value for clinical progression, but it is not clear how individuals move through these stages. We examined changes in ATN profiles over time, and investigated determinants of change in A status, in a sample of cognitively normal individuals presenting with subjective cognitive decline (SCD). METHODS: We included 92 individuals with SCD from the SCIENCe project with [18F]florbetapir PET (A) available at two time points (65 ± 8y, 42% female, MMSE 29 ± 1, follow-up 2.5 ± 0.7y). Rehabilitation of Individuals With Diabetes Mellitus: Focus on Diabetic Myopathy.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, causing serious damage to the cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and other systems. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was 6.28% in 2017, considering all age groups worldwide (prevalence rate of 6,059 cases per 100,000), and its global prevalence is projected to increase to 7,079 cases per 100,000 by 2030. Furthermore, these individuals are often affected by diabetic myopathy, which is the failure to preserve muscle mass and function in the course of DM. This happens in type 1 diabe
