Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among health care workers in Nasarawa State, Nigeria: implications for infection prevention and control measures.

INTRODUCTION: health care workers (HCWs) are on the frontline, waging war against SARS-CoV-2 and have a higher risk of infection with exposure to an infected person with SARS-CoV-2. There is a paucity of information on clinical characteristics and infection risk gradient of HCWs with SARS-CoV-2 with the view to marshal preventive measures. METHODS: we conducted a multi-center case series analysis of 648 HCWs who were randomly selected in private and public hospitals across Nasarawa State, managing cases of SARS-CoV-2. Demographic and epidemiological information, were abstracted from electroni

The Cervicovaginal Microbiota in Women Notified for Chlamydia trachomatis Infection: A Case-Control Study at the Sexually Transmitted Infection Outpatient Clinic in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that the cervicovaginal microbiota (CVM) plays an important role in acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Here we study the CVM in a population of women notified by a sex partner for Chlamydia trachomatis infection. METHODS: We included 98 women who were contact-traced by C. trachomatis-positive sex partners at the STI outpatient clinic in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and analyzed their cervicovaginal samples and clinical data. CVMs were characterized by sequencing the V3/V4 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene and by hierarchical clustering

Prevention and control of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infections: memorandum from a WHO meeting. WHO Consultation on Prevention and Control of Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) Infections.

Escherichia coli is a commonly occurring inhabitant of the intestine of humans and other animals, but there are several pathogenic types of E. coli which cause a variety of human diseases. One of these pathogenic types, E. coli O157:H7, belongs to the group of enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) which produce potent toxins and cause a particularly severe form of disease, haemorrhagic colitis (HC). About 10% of patients with HC can go on to develop haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening complication of E. coli O157:H7 infection that is characterized by acute renal failure, haemolyt

Adaptive Immune Responses to Zika Virus Are Important for Controlling Virus Infection and Preventing Infection in Brain and Testes.

The recent association between Zika virus (ZIKV) and neurologic complications, including Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults and CNS abnormalities in fetuses, highlights the importance in understanding the immunological mechanisms controlling this emerging infection. Studies have indicated that ZIKV evades the human type I IFN response, suggesting a role for the adaptive immune response in resolving infection. However, the inability of ZIKV to antagonize the mouse IFN response renders the virus highly susceptible to circulating IFN in murine models. Thus, as we show in this article, although wil

[Vacuum assisted closure for the treatment of sternal wound infections -- rapid infection control and bridging to reconstructive surgery].

Vacuum Assisted Closure (V.A.C.) is a sound strategy to control severe post-sternotomy infection. Secondary re-wiring of the sternal bone or reconstructive surgery may be required later to achieve complete wound closure. Ten patients with severe sternal bone infection underwent initial V.A.C. therapy and delayed surgery for wound closure. Complete wound healing was achieved in all cases. As a case report we describe a patient with right-sided mastectomy and irradiation for breast cancer, who developed severe post-sternotomy infection and sternal bone necrosis following CABG. A combination of V

A controlled trial of itraconazole to prevent relapse of Penicillium marneffei infection in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: In Southeast Asia, disseminated infection with Penicillium marneffei is common among patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Even after successful primary treatment, the relapse rate for this potentially fatal systemic fungal infection is about 50 percent. METHODS: We conducted a double-blind trial in Thailand to evaluate itraconazole as secondary prophylaxis against P. marneffei infection in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who were in complete remission after treatment for culture-proved P. marneffei infection. The patients were ran

Ultrastructural insights of infection and biological control of Alternaria alternata Kl3 mediated leaf spot disease in kohlrabi.

Rapid shifts in agro-climatic conditions have accelerated the emergence and severity of fungal plant diseases necessitating continuous pathogen monitoring and development of sustainable control strategies. Consequently, plant-beneficial bacteria-based biological control is one such prime and widely used strategy. Leaf spot diseases caused by Alternaria spp. pose a serious threat to Brassica cultivation, yet etiological and mechanistic insights into kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) leaf spot disease remian limited. In this comprehensive study a dominant fungal isolate Kl3, was recov

The last breath of the aerosol-generating procedure? Implications for anaesthesia of Scotland's new infection control guidance.

In August 2026, Scotland fundamentally changed its infection control guidance regarding how respiratory disease transmission risk is managed, by replacing the droplet-airborne dichotomy with the simpler concept of air transmission and entirely removing the aerosol-generating procedure (AGP) list. This evidence-informed approach is based largely on the findings of clinical aerosol studies undertaken during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, which demonstrated that many procedures on the existing AGP lists, such as tracheal intubation, generate little or no respiratory aerosol (substantially…

Relationship between perceived risk and compliance with infection control measures during the first year of a pandemic.

The way people perceive health risks is often assumed to influence how they adopt precautionary measures. However, people's assessment of a given phenomenon's risk may vary over time, and the relationship between perceived risk and compliance with protective measures may be dynamic and bi-directional. We measured the perceived risk of COVID-19 and compliance with infection control measures for a large representative sample at four time-points during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Norway. We employed a cross-lagged panel analysis to investigate both the cross-sectional and the tempo…

Infection Prevention and Control in the Intensive Care Unit: Preventing the Spread of Multi-Drug-Resistant Organisms.

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat to human health and especially relevant in critical care settings. Intensive care unit patients are particularly vulnerable to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) because of characteristic immunosuppression, reliance on medical devices, treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics, and exposure to the hospital environment. Nurses play a critical role in preventing the spread of MDROs by leading coordinated, multimodal interventions including antibiotic and laboratory stewardship, passive and active pathogen surveillance, implementation and de-escalat

Perioperative Management of Biologic and Targeted Synthetic DMARDs in Orthopedic Surgery: Balancing Infection Risk and Disease Control.

The perioperative management of biologic and immunomodulatory therapies in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery poses a clinical challenge, primarily due to the increased risk of postoperative infections. Biologic agents, particularly TNF inhibitors and interleukin-targeting drugs, may impair host immune responses, potentially increasing the risk of surgical site infections (SSIs), delayed wound healing, and systemic infections. However, abrupt discontinuation of these therapies can lead to disease flare-ups, which themselves may complicate recovery and rehabilitation. In addition, discontin
