[Effect of interleukin 15 on the PMN activity in Lyme borreliosis].

In the present study, the effect was examined of rhIL-15 on neutrophil (PMN) activity (locomotion, phagocytosis and NBT reduction) in patients with Lyme disease. We found an increase of all parameters after IL-15 stimulation. The sera from the patients contained increased level of IL-15 in relation to controls. The results obtained indicate the modulatory effect of IL-15 on the PMN activity during Lyme disease.

[Gene expression of Interleukin 1 in vitamin A and proteins deficiency].

The influence of low levels of protein and vitamin A on indicators of the immune response was assayed in rats. The levels of protein and vitamin A intake of the Cuban population affected by epidemic neuropathy in 1993 was reproduced in 4 diets: control, protein deficiency (DP), vitamin A deficiency (DA), protein and vitamin A deficiency (DAP). The Peyer's patches evaluated the Interleukin 1 expression gene and was related with corporal weight, food intake, serum protein, vitamin A, immunology indicators and histology evaluation (spleen, thymus and liver). Protein deficiency generated a signifi

Interleukin-2 in the pathogenesis of perinatal white matter damage.

Proinflammatory cytokines were reported to be implicated in the pathogenesis of perinatal white matter lesions. The authors document for the first time the in situ detection of interleukin-2 and interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) in these human white matter lesions. These results suggest that interleukin-2, reported to be toxic to oligodendrocytes and myelin, could play a role in the molecular cascade leading to white matter damage in periventricular leukomalacia.

Interleukin-13 and IgE production in rat experimental schistosomiasis.

We have previously demonstrated in rat experimental schistosomiasis an upregulation of IL-4 expression at the mRNA and protein levels which could explain, at least in part, the increased IgE production observed during infection. Using this model, we have investigated the expression of IL-13 which is also involved in the induction of the IgE response. In the present study, we have shown a significant increase in IL-13 mRNA expression in spleen, liver and lungs following primary and secondary infection. IL-13 protein was detected by intracellular staining in spleen cells from infected rats, and

Increased levels of serum interleukin-18 in Graves' disease.

We have previously reported that serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) and IL-12 levels were significantly increased in hyperthyroid Graves' disease. In this study, we investigated serum IL-18 levels in patients with either Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The serum IL-18 levels in Graves' disease were significantly increased in the hyperthyroid state and were decreased during treatment with methimazole or propylthiouracil. On the other hand, the levels in Hashimoto's thyroiditis in the hypothyroid state showed no significant differences from those in healthy subjects. When

Pathophysiological roles of interleukin-18 in inflammatory liver diseases.

Innate immune response to microbes sometimes determines the nature of the following specific immune response. Kupffer cells, a potent constituent of innate immunity, play a key role in developing the type 1 immune response by interleukin (IL)-12 production. Furthermore, Kupffer cells have the potential to induce liver injury by production of IL-18. Propionibacterium acnes-primed lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged liver injury is the prototype of IL-18-induced tissue injury, in which IL-18 acts on natural killer cells to increase Fas ligand (FasL) that causes liver injury by induction of Fas-d

Delivery to macrophages of interleukin 3 loaded in mouse erythrocytes.

Mouse carrier erythrocytes containing 125I-interleukin 3 have been prepared and treated with band 3 crosslinking reagents. The incorporation of interleukin 3 by hypotonic treatment into mouse erythrocytes reached levels of about 15% of the interleukin 3 added to the medium being predominantly present in the cytosolic fraction (73%). Uptake fell to about 7.4% when using the same conditions but omitting hypotonic shock. The interaction of band 3 crosslinked interleukin 3 loaded erythrocytes with macrophages was also studied. A high level of incorporation of interleukin 3 into macrophages was obs

Rheumatoid arthritis exacerbation caused by exogenous interleukin-12.

Interleukin-12 (IL-12) is a pleiotropic cytokine with proinflammatory, immunoregulatory, antitumor, and antimetastatic properties. It plays a crucial role in the development of the Th1 response and subsequent interferon-gamma production and enhancement of cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Recently, IL-12 has been used as an experimental therapy for cancer. Given the multiple immunomodulatory properties of IL-12, there are potential concerns associated with its clinical use. Of special interest are the possible side effects of IL-12 therapy in patients with autoimmune diseases, especially those that

Interleukin-10 and Gp130 cytokines in human multiple myeloma.

Interleukin (IL)-10 is a critical cytokine involved in the terminal differentiation of B cells into plasma cells. IL-10 is also involved in multiple myeloma, a malignant plasma cell disorder. IL-6 and, more generally the cytokines activating the gp130 IL-6 transducer, are major survival and proliferation factors of myeloma cells. IL-10 is also a growth factor of malignant plasma cells, produced by myeloma cells from about half the patients and is detected in the plasma of patients with plasma cell leukemia or solitary plasmacytoma. The myeloma cell growth activity of IL-10 is mediated through

Impaired interleukin-12 production in multiple sclerosis patients.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease of the human central nervous system, is believed to be a T cell mediated autoimmune disorder with genetic and environmental influences. Interleukin-12 (IL-12), a proinflammatory cytokine produced primarily by antigen presenting cells is a potent inducer of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and other Th1 cytokines that may play an important role in MS pathogenesis. We have investigated IL-12 production induced by the T cell independent pathway in untreated and IFN-beta treated MS patients, healthy individuals and other neurological disease (OND) patients in respons

Circadian interleukin-6 secretion and quantity and depth of sleep.

Patients with pathologically increased daytime sleepiness and fatigue have elevated levels of circulating interleukin-6 (IL-6). The latter is an inflammatory cytokine, which causes sickness manifestations, including somnolence and fatigue, and activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In this study, we examined: 1) the relation between serial measurements of plasma IL-6 and quantity and depth of sleep, evaluated by polysomnography; and 2) the effects of sleep deprivation on the nyctohemeral pattern of IL-6 secretion. Eight healthy young male volunteers were sampled for 24 h twice,

Elevated concentrations of eotaxin and interleukin-5 in human neurocysticercosis.

Symptomatic neurocysticercosis, a major cause of epilepsy worldwide, results from inflammation around Taenia solium larvae, but the mechanisms are unknown. Eotaxin, not previously reported in cases of human infection, and interleukin-5 (IL-5) but not IL-8 concentrations were elevated in patient serum, and IL-5 levels were also elevated in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Eosinophil-selective mediators may be involved in the pathogenesis of cysticercosis. IL-6 concentrations were also elevated in patient CSF, possibly indicative of an acute-phase response.

[Eosinophilia and interleukin-5: role in pulmonary atopic processes].

Infiltration of some tissues including the lung by activated eosinophil leukocytes is a characteristic feature of allergic disorders. In asthma patients, eosinophils have been shown to promote and prolong inflammation of bronchial mucosa. This effect is due to the release by eosinophils of numerous inflammation-stimulating mediators and cytokines as well as cationic proteins known to damage lung epithelium. Differentiation of eosinophils from their hematopoietic precursors as well as subsequent processes including maturation, chemotaxis, and activation are controlled mainly by interleukin-5 (I
