Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES): proposal for informed consent.

Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is now a first choice method for studying swallowing disorders on account of the various advantages it offers: easy to use, very well tolerated, allows bedside examination and is economic. Nevertheless, this diagnostic procedure is not without risks, the most probable consequences of which include discomfort, gagging and/or vomiting, vasovagal syncope, epistaxis, mucosal perforation, adverse reactions to topical anaesthetics and laryngospasm. The risks involved with FEES stress the importance of informing the patient of these; this is an im

Application of the high risk model of threat perception to a primary care patient population.

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that patients with a tendency to somatize psychological distress into physical symptoms could be differentiated from patients who do not somatize on the basis of specific predisposing factors defined by the High Risk Model of Threat Perception. Patients in a family practice were assessed for the tendency to somatize by the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS) and by physician rating. Twenty-seven percent of the patients were positive for tendency to somatize by physician rating. These patients had relatively high negative affect, absorption, catast

The Psychological Effects of Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Grounded Theory Study.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare neurological condition. Research has increased our understanding of the etiology, prognosis, and effective medical treatment of the illness. There is a lack of understanding regarding the psychological effects and what could help patients. This study aimed to begin to address this using constructivist grounded theory. Eleven interviews were conducted with participants who had received a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome in the preceding 4 years. The model that emerged identified two key processes: "Loss, determination, and adjustment" and "The unknown." "Re

Internet use and social support in women with breast cancer.

Many Web sites offer information to breast cancer patients, who are increasingly using these sites. The authors investigated the potential psychological benefits of Internet use for medical information by breast cancer patients. Of the 251 women approached, 188 were successfully interviewed (74.9%). Forty-two percent used the Internet for medical information related to breast health issues and did so for an average of 0.80 hr per week. The Interpersonal Support Evaluation List and the UCLA Loneliness Scale, with results controlled for covariates, showed that Internet use for breast health issu

Low pressure/low flow voiding in younger men: psychological aspects.

Low pressure/low flow voiding in young and middle-aged males in the absence of outflow tract obstruction has been reported as being associated with anxiety and a high incidence of dyspepsia. To assess objectively the psychological basis of this condition, an unselected group of 50 men aged 25 to 55 years was evaluated by psychiatric interview, questionnaires and urodynamic tests. In addition, patients involved in an earlier study were psychologically evaluated. Low pressure/low flow voiding was demonstrated in three (6%) of the new patients. This voiding pattern was related to a long preceding

Living with haemodialysis in Sri Lanka: a qualitative study on patient adaptation and care perceptions.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of individuals undergoing haemodialysis (HD) compels the necessity of person-centred care to minimise treatment-related complications and improve the quality of life. Although the person-centred approach has been widely discussed, it remains underutilised in HD care, particularly in low- to middle-income countries. Understanding how patients perceive their care is crucial for developing tailored interventions and achieving desirable health outcomes. Therefore, this study was aimed to explore patients’ experiences of HD care in three selected government hos

What makes patients aware of their artificial knee joint?

BACKGROUND: Joint awareness was recently introduced as a new concept for outcome assessment after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Findings from qualitative and psychometric studies suggest that joint awareness is a distinct concept especially relevant to patients with good surgical outcome and patients at late follow-up time points. The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of the concept of joint awareness by identifying situations in which patients are aware of their artificial knee joint and to investigate what bodily sensations and psychological factors raise a patient's awaren

An Exploration of Help-seeking Experiences of Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease From Healthcare Professionals: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents ongoing physical, psychological, and social challenges that can significantly affect quality of life. Despite this, little is known about how individuals with IBD seek help from healthcare professionals. This study used a qualitative descriptive design and latent pattern content analysis of semi-structured interviews (n = 8) to explore how individuals living with IBD seek help from healthcare professionals to manage challenges associated with their condition. The study adheres to the COREQ guidelines. Many participants delayed seeking help until sympto

Psychological Profile of Patients with Psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with a global prevalence of approximately 2% and significant psychiatric comorbidity. There is a great deal of existing literature assessing different aspects of psychology in psoriasis. We aimed to conduct an in-depth review of current evidence linking psoriasis to personality traits and psychiatric comorbidities, as well as factors that put these patients at risk of psychopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of the PubMed database identified 1632 articles. We included articles studying psychological comorbidity in patients with

Investigating the effect of the London living wage on the psychological wellbeing of low-wage service sector employees: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Working poverty has become a major public health concern in recent times, and low-paid, insecure employment has been widely linked to poor psychological wellbeing. The London Living Wage (LLW) campaign aims to ensure employees receive adequate pay. The objective of this study is to investigate whether working for a LLW employer predicted higher levels of psychological wellbeing among low-wage service sector employees. METHODS: Workplace interviews were conducted with 300 service sector employees in London; 173 of whom were in LLW workplaces. Positive psychological wellbeing was me

Mechanisms related to psychological well-being in older women with chronic illnesses: age and disease comparisons.

The influence of type of illness (breast cancer versus osteoarthritis) and age on physical health and functioning, self-system interpretive mechanisms, and women's psychological well-being were examined. Self-system interpretive mechanisms are considered mediators of the effects of physical health on psychological well-being and include social comparisons, social integration, and illness perceptions. Young-old (aged 60-74) and old-old (75 +) women, diagnosed with osteoarthritis (N = 102) or breast cancer (N = 86), who volunteered for the study were interviewed using structured self-report scal

Navigating intersectional stigma and post-traumatic growth among heterosexually married men who have sex with men living with HIV in China.

BACKGROUND: Heterosexually married men who have sex with men living with HIV (MSMW-HIV+) in China occupy a uniquely marginalized position shaped by intersecting stigmas related to HIV, same-sex behavior, and marital norms. Existing research has largely emphasized risk, pathology, and moral failure, with limited attention to how individuals navigate, reinterpret, and potentially transform these experiences under structural constraint. Drawing on post-traumatic growth (PTG) theory and an intersectionality framework, this study examined how growth and adaptation unfold within a collectivist socio
