Molecular-Orientation Engineering Photonic Spin Textures Rotation in Organic Crystal Microcavities.

Exciton polaritons, as bosonic quasi-particles with both photon and exciton properties, provide an excellent platform for investigating novel physical effects of optical spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the intrinsic correlation between exciton polaritons and the spin textures evolution of the SOC lacks an intuitive explanation. Here, we demonstrate the spin textures rotation of optical SOC through the interaction of exciton and photons in organic crystal-filled microcavities with different molecular orientations. The spin textures exhibit an antisymmetric spatial distribution of left- and

Effect of Convection Rolls in Motility-Induced Phase Separation of Active Janus Particles.

We numerically study motility-induced phase separation of active particles in two-dimensional convection rolls. We analyze local packing-fraction distributions, density fluctuations, the corresponding phase diagrams, and diffusivity curves to characterize the interplay between self-propulsion, global packing fraction, and advection strength. In the weak-flow regime, the system exhibits phase separation characterized by bimodal density distributions, slowly decaying density fluctuations, and a sharp reduction in diffusivity. Increasing advection suppresses clustering by enhancing particle trans

Introduction to Concepts in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Pharmacoepidemiologists: Large Language Models.

Large language models (LLMs) represent a type of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) that generate and interpret text, with some LLMs able to process multimodal content (e.g., images, audio, video), and can be deployed as part of agents to perform users' tasks. LLMs can perform natural language processing functions such as summarization, translation, and extraction giving them the potential to enhance and scale pharmacoepidemiological and real-world research by performing tasks such as literature review, data extraction, and medical writing. Despite the growing integration of GenAI tool

FASTA-Fetcher: A Multicolumn Tool for Bulk Retrieval of NCBI Sequences in Plant-Biotic Stress Research.

Timely and accurate detection of plant pathogens is critical for sustainable agriculture and forestry. Molecular methods enable unequivocal pathogen identification, especially when traditional diagnostics fall short, allowing timely and effective interventions. However, they rely on the large-scale retrieval of nucleotide sequences for robust phylogenetic analyses. Batch downloading from NCBI, however, remains a barrier for users without programming expertise. To address this challenge, in this chapter, we describe FASTA-Fetcher, a free, cross-platform, GUI-based application that automates lar

Transplant Business Best Practices: An American Society of Transplant Surgeons Business Practice Services Committee Opinion on Reimbursement, Cost Accounting, and Professional Coding in Modern Transplant Practice.

Financial stewardship in transplantation requires integrated management of three distinct reimbursement domains: organ acquisition, transplant hospitalization, and physician professional services. Of these, organ acquisition is often the most complex and least intuitively understood, despite its major financial implications. This article outlines business best practices for transplant programs. Organ Acquisition Cost Centers should be managed as cost recovery structures rather than profit centers, with attention to Medicare Cost Report mechanics, living donor cost reporting, organ statistics,

ReCQC: A Novel NMR Data Analysis Platform Leveraging 13C NMR and HSQC Database Strategies for Natural Product Dereplication.

Leveraging 13C NMR spectroscopic data, in this study, an innovative methodology is proposed for the efficient and accurate elucidation of the skeletal structures of target components within complex mixtures through the identification of maximum substructures and implementation of dynamic scoring. This approach not only facilitates targeted compound isolation but also enables iterative optimization of scoring outcomes. Using this approach, the team developed ReCQC 1.0, a publicly accessible software platform for mixture dereplication. To further increase analytical precision, advanced research

Robust representation of the spatial arrangement of topological features.

Recent work has shown that people are sensitive to coarse differences in network topology, including network features like "holes," "crosses," and "T-junctions." Even children as young as 4 years old will readily distinguish between items that differ slightly in their network topology. But how robust is this sensitivity? Here, we evaluate whether people are not only sensitive to differences in the presence or absence of certain topological features, but also to their exact spatial arrangement. In a first experiment, we show that people distinguish figures which possess all the same topological

First deceased donor robotic kidney transplantation in Korea: a case report.

Robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) has emerged as a feasible alternative to conventional open and laparoscopic kidney transplantation. RAKT was first introduced in 2002; however, the first pure robotic procedure was not performed until 2010, and its application has since expanded globally. Despite South Korea's advanced medical infrastructure, no deceased donor RAKT had been reported prior to this case. Here, we report the first case of deceased donor RAKT in Korea. The donor was a 36-year-old woman with no renal impairment, and the recipient was a 58-year-old woman with chronic gl

Let's Stalk about Membranes: Committor-Based Enhanced Sampling of Stalk Formation.

Membrane fusion is essential for cellular communication and function, and understanding how two lipid bilayers merge is the key to informing therapeutic strategies. Functionalized nanoparticles have recently emerged as synthetic fusogens, but the molecular mechanisms driving this process remain unclear, partly because fusion involves transitions over high free-energy barriers, which are difficult to capture in molecular simulations. While enhanced sampling methods can address this problem, they also rely on the definition of collective variables, which are especially hard to define for fusion

Wrist-Wearable sEMG Gesture Recognition System Based on ThinNet Lightweight Neural Network.

Wearable surface electromyography (sEMG)-based gesture recognition enables intuitive human-machine interaction, but practical deployment is often limited by hardware constraints, model complexity, and inter-subject variability. In this study, we developed a high-performance wrist-worn sEMG acquisition system and a lightweight neural network, ThinNet, to achieve efficient and accurate gesture recognition. The wristband features a ring-shaped differential electrode array and embedded filtering modules, achieving a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 66.96 dB, significantly higher than commercial devi

cellGeometry: ultra-fast single-cell deconvolution of bulk RNA-Seq using a geometric solution.

Single-cell analysis has rapidly expanded to produce cell atlases encompassing all human tissues. However, computational methods to deconvolute bulk samples using single-cell reference data have failed to keep pace with the increasing data size. Here we present cellGeometry, which uses non-negative geometric deconvolution (NGD), an intuitive vector projection method featuring non-negative matrix regularisation. Using matrix operations, cellGeometry scales to massive datasets and is ultrafast. Benchmarked using simulations from single-cell/nucleus RNA-Seq datasets with >3 million cells, cellGeo

Dissection and Isolation of Mouse Dorsal Root Ganglia.

Dorsal root ganglia (DRG), which contain the cell bodies of primary sensory neurons, serve as critical relay structures for the transmission of sensory signals from peripheral tissues to the spinal cord. They play essential roles in studies of pain, nerve injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. The acquisition of intact DRG tissue is crucial for investigating the functional properties, molecular expression, and pathological alterations of sensory neurons. However, due to their small size and deep location within the vertebral canal, accurate identification and isolation of DRG present signific

Dark Personalities and Cognitive Styles: Two Distinct Dispositions Toward Antisocial Behaviour.

Previous research documented that Dark Tetrad (DT) traits and diminished cognitive abilities represent risk factors for antisocial behaviour. In the present cross-sectional study we tested the hypothesis that cognitive styles reflected in overconfidence, intuitive, simplistic, and fast thinking may mediate the links between DT and antisocial behaviour (N = 514). Our results showed that DT traits, with an emphasis on sadism and psychopathy, are positively correlated with antisocial behaviour, and certain cognitive styles: positive associations with overconfidence in physical appearance and dich

Optimising feedback provision and literacy in medical training: linking theory to practice.

Feedback is a cornerstone of all competency-based medical education and training programmes, where learners receive feedback from preceptors on various aspects of clinical performance to attain desired outcomes. However, feedback processes are often suboptimal due to lack of training and expertise of the preceptors in effective feedback provision leading to ineffective feedback that is lacking in timeliness, substance, actionability or palatability. In addition, inadequate feedback literacy in terms of poor self-awareness, affective overlay or lack of motivation to change further limits recept

Analyzing multidimensional formal dynamic models in psychology: A tutorial using graphical tools.

Formal theories translate verbal theories into a mathematical representation, such as a coupled differential equation or other dynamical systems, intending to strengthen the deductive power of (clinical) theories and to formulate testable and novel hypotheses. Work in clinical formal theories mainly relies on simulations, which is an intuitive method for evaluating overall model performance, but may fall short of establishing a precise link between the mathematical properties of the model and the dynamic properties of its outcome. Moreover, when the model's outcome contradicts clinical observa

Fulminant Pertussis in infancy: The Critical Role of Clinical Acumen and Therapeutic Strategies - A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in early childhood, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with delayed vaccination schedules. Despite global immunization efforts, pertussis has re-emerged, presenting diagnostic and management challenges. Early recognition requires clinical acumen, as atypical presentations-especially fulminant cases-can mimic other respiratory conditions. CASE REPORT: This case report highlights a 9-week-old female infant with severe paroxysmal coughing and progressive respiratory d

MuSpAn: a toolbox for multiscale spatial analysis.

Advances in multiplex imaging and spatial omics have revolutionised spatial data generation in biology, revealing complex tissue organisation across multiple scales. However, methods for analysing these data have lagged behind, with fragmented, study-specific pipelines and limited guidance for tool selection. To address this, we introduce MuSpAn, a Multiscale Spatial Analysis package offering intuitive, flexible access to a wide range of mathematical tools - including spatial statistics, topological data analysis, geometry, and networks - within a unified framework. MuSpAn supports efficient d

Augmenting Body Weight Support Rehabilitation with Mixed Reality to Enhance Lower Limb Functional Recovery Post-Stroke.

Traditional stroke rehabilitation can be repetitive and disengaging, leading to reduced patient adherence and slower recovery. Technology such as Mixed Reality (MR) offers a novel approach to rehabilitation by transforming repetitive exercises into immersive interactive experiences. This study investigates the use of MR to enhance lower limb rehabilitation in subacute stroke patients by integrating immersive exercises with a dynamic body weight support system (the Vector Gait and Safety System). Our system features interactive tasks, including stepping exercises, obstacle avoidance, hand-eye c

A linear-attention based network for estimating continuous upper limb movement from surface electromyography.

Continuous kinematics estimation methods are important in human-machine interaction systems because they offer a more natural and intuitive result than pattern-recognition methods. The estimation of upper-limb movement is important, which involves the estimation of the movement of the elbow and shoulder joints. However, the deformations of muscles around the elbow and shoulder can cause the shifting of the angle sensors. Nevertheless, Vicon can measure joint angles using cameras that have no contact with muscles. In this paper, we propose a Linear-Attention-based model (LABD) rather than other

A New Look at Vaccination Behaviors and Intentions: The Case of Influenza.

Although viral outbreaks are increasing, vaccination rates are decreasing. Our aim was to explain this baffling behavior that seems to contradict rational self-interest, and, thus, be beyond the purview of rational choice theories. We integrated fuzzy-trace theory and major theoretical alternatives and applied them to influenza, testing theoretical predictions in two samples: young adults (who are major viral vectors), N = 722, and community members, N = 185. Controlling for prior knowledge and other psychosocial factors that influence vaccination, explained variance jumped significantly when
