Human Papillomavirus.

Individuals with inherited immunodeficiencies, autoimmune disorders, organ or bone marrow transplantation, or infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at increased risk of infection with both low-risk and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) types. Chronic immunosuppression provides an environment for persistent HPV infection which carries a higher risk of malignant transformation. Screening guidelines have been developed or advocated for processes that have detectable premalignant lesions, such as anal cancer or cervical cancer. For other anatomic locations, such as cutaneous, pe

Evaluation of Level of Agreement in Bordetella Species Identification in Three U.S. Laboratories during a Period of Increased Pertussis.

While PCR is the most common method used for detecting Bordetella pertussis in the United States, most laboratories use insertion sequence 481 (IS481), which is not specific for B. pertussis; therefore, the relative contribution of other Bordetella species is not understood. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the proportion of other Bordetella species misidentified as B. pertussis during a period of increased pertussis incidence, determine the level of agreement in Bordetella species detection between U.S. commercial laboratories and the CDC, and assess the relative diagnostic sensi

A review of filovirus work and facilities at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory Porton Down.

Porton Down houses two separate sites capable of conducting high containment research on ACDP (Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens) Hazard Group 4 agents: the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA), and filovirus research has been performed at Porton Down since the first Marburg virus disease outbreak in 1967. All work is conducted within primary containment either within cabinet lines (for in vitro work) or large rigid half-suit isolators (for in vivo work). There are extensive aerobiological facilities at high containment and the use of

Molecular methods used in clinical laboratory: prospects and pitfalls.

The role of molecular detection, identification and typing or fingerprinting of microorganisms has shifted gradually from the academic world to the routine diagnostic laboratory. Molecular methods have been used increasingly over the past decade to improve the sensitivity, specificity and turn-around time in the clinical laboratory. Molecular methods have also been used to identify new and nonculturable agents. Many high-throughput molecular tests are now available commercially, which impacts on the infrastructure in many of the diagnostic laboratories. In this paper, we take an overall look a

Respiratory tract infections. Goals for 1995.

Goals to be identified for 1995, a decade hence, in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of respiratory tract infections may conveniently be divided into diagnostic goals and goals in therapy and prophylaxis. Major diagnostic goals for bacterial, viral, and mycoplasmal infections of the respiratory tract focus on the development of systems to identify microbial components, such as specific antigens or segments of DNA, using monoclonal antibody techniques or DNA probes for hybridization. Sputum cultures, in the traditional sense, should ultimately become obsolete. Management goals include

Zika Virus Infection Among Pregnant Women and Their Neonates in New York City, January 2016-June 2017.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare differences in the epidemiologic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of pregnant women with confirmed or probable Zika virus infection and to compare the risk of having a neonate with laboratory evidence of Zika virus infection with that of having a neonate without evidence of Zika virus infection by maternal characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of women with Zika virus infection who completed pregnancy in New York City from January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Confirmed Zika virus infection was defined as 1) nucleic acid am

Discriminating Disease Flare From Infection in Febrile Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in a Safety-Net Hospital System: A Multicenter Study.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess clinical laboratory parameters that distinguish between disease flare and infection in febrile patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) at safety-net hospitals in Los Angeles. METHODS: We reviewed electronic medical records of patients admitted from August 1, 2016, through July 31, 2019, categorizing them as disease flare, bacterial infection (culture positive), culture-negative infection, and both flare and infection. Laboratory parameters collected within 48 hours of admission (complete blood cell count with differential, liver fu

Characterization of Gram stainability of Gram-variable Gardnerella spp. using the UF-1500 Fully Automated Urine Particle Analyzer.

Gram-variable organisms, such as Gardnerella spp. are difficult to determine with the Gram staining technique. We evaluated the performance of characterization of Gardnerella spp. by an UF-1500 Fully Automated Urine Particle Analyzer. The results showed that UF-1500 determines Gardnerella spp. in clinical urine and isolates as gram-positive bacteria.

[Isolation of anaerobes during a 30-month observation at a hospital microbiology laboratory].

The authors evaluate retrospectively the results obtained from the research of anaerobial bacteria on 1313 samples received at the Microbiology Laboratory of the "Ospedale Civile di Ivrea" over a period of 31 months (6/1/86-12/31/88). From this evaluation, high percentages of detection of anaerobic bacteria are emerging in the following infections: appendiculare abscesses (60%), intestinal operations (71%), wounds (57%), tubovarian abscesses (100%), as well as thoracic empyema (50%). Also relevant are the isolations from skin and subcutaneous tissues: breast infections (50%) preputial infectio
