[The use of confocal corneal microscopy in the Cogan microcystic dystrophy diagnosis and follow-up of the ultrastructural changes after phototherapeutic keratectomy].

UNLABELLED: Confocal microscopy represents modern, non-invasive, semi-contact examination method making possible to visualize separate corneal layers (from the endothel to the epithel) in high resolution. Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) is a method using argon-fluoride laser with 193 nm wavelength to treat corneal surface diseases. AIM: To evaluate the use of confocal microscopy for epithelial basal membrane dystrophy diagnosis (Cogan microcystic dystrophy) and following corneal ultra-structural changes in vivo after PTK. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The group consisted of 14 eyes of 9 patients

Corneal topography six years after photorefractive keratectomy for myopia and myopic astigmatism.

PURPOSE: To analyze the 6-year response of corneal topography to photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Twenty patients (40 eyes) who had PRK using the Technolas Keracor 217C excimer laser platform were followed up to 6 years after surgery. The eyes were subdivided into three groups according to the preoperative spherical equivalent refraction and astigmatism component. Corneal topographic maps were obtained with a Placido disk topographer (Keratron Scout). The pre- and postoperative topographical data were imported into custom software, which computed t

AIM: To evaluate the results in patients with hypermetropia having undergone photoreactive keratectomy (PRK). GROUP AND METHODS: The authors present a retrospective analysis of the results in 40 eyes operated on PRK in the period of September 1997 to November 2002 at the Eye Clinic of the Faculty Hospital in Hradec Králové. The mean preoperation spherical refraction was 2.90 +/- 0.98 dioptry (D), the mean astigmatism being -0.82 +/- 0.78 D, visual uncorrected visual acuity (NZO) 0.37 +/- 0.37, the mean corrected visual acuity (KZO) 1.28 +/- 0.27). RESULTS: One year after the operation on 31

Cinemakeratography using computer morphing.

PURPOSE: TMS-1 videokeratography (Tomey Technologies, Inc.) was animated using computer morphing to visualize corneal shape change over time. METHODS: Morphing was performed using keratoconus (8 examinations/76 months) and postoperative photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) corneas (8 examinations/37 months; LSU PRK Phase IIa). RESULTS: In the keratoconus animation, the inferior cone increased curvature, but not equally in all directions, nor at a constant rate. The cone apex did not drift over time. Periodic flattening and steepening was observed superiorly, as well as cone regression at month

Comparison of Low Laser Energy Dose in KLEx: Short-term Clinical Results, Video Analysis, and Histologic Study of Lenticules.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of reducing pulse energy and total energy dose during keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) using the ATOS femtosecond laser (SCHWIND eye-tech-solutions GmbH) on early surgical outcomes and corneal surface roughness. METHODS: This study included 80 patients (160 eyes) who underwent KLEx for myopia correction at a single clinic. Differences in the Corneal Biomechanical Responses to LASIK and KLEx Based on Parametric Numerical Simulation.

PURPOSE: To use parametric numerical simulation to characterize and compare the differences in corneal biomechanical responses to laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) under various surgical settings. METHODS: The Finite Element Model was used in a parametric study to evaluate corneal biomechanical responses to LASIK and KLEx, considering variations in preoperative corneal thickness, corneal flap/cap thickness and diameter, refractive correction, and optical zone diameter. Surgery-induced stress, displacement, and interface contact pressure were

[Peripheral sterile corneal infiltrates after small incision lenticule extraction].

A 31-year-old female patient with refractive error in both eyes underwent small incision lenticule extraction. On the 4th day after surgery, arc-shaped peripheral corneal infiltrates appeared in the right eye. Tobramycin and dexamethasone eye drops, 0.3% gatifloxacin eye drops, and a corneal bandage lens were applied to the eye. After bacterial infection was ruled out, dexamethasone sodium phosphate was injected subconjunctivally near the corneal lesion. The symptoms improved and the corneal lesion subsided afterwards.

PURPOSE: To compare quality of life (QoL) between patients who receive bilateral small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) or laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) vs bilateral sequential SMILE-LASIK (BSSL) surgery. SETTING: Singapore National Eye Centre, Singapore. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: 2 patient cohorts were recruited (2010-2012; 2014-2016). The bilateral SMILE (BS) and bilateral LASIK (BL) groups comprised patients (mean ± SD age: 30.3 ± 6.5, 50% male) from a prospective nonrandomized study who chose SMILE and LASIK, respectively. The BSSL group comprised patients

Comparison of femtosecond laser-assisted corneal intrastromal xenotransplantation and the allotransplantation in rhesus monkeys.

BACKGROUND: In our previous study, we showed that both allogeneic and autogeneic small-incision femtosecond laser-assisted corneal intrastromal transplantation are safe and effective surgeries. However, the results of small-incision femtosecond laser-assisted intrastromal xenotransplantation have not yet been explored. Additionally, we suggest that glycerol-dehydrated corneal lamellae might provide a possible alternative for this xenogenic implantation approach. METHODS: Corneal inlay lamellae were produced from rabbits and humans using femtosecond laser-assisted surgeries and were dehydrated

Multiple regression analysis in nomogram development for myopic wavefront laser in situ keratomileusis: Improving astigmatic outcomes.

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate a new multiple regression-derived nomogram for myopic wavefront laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). SETTING: Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, United Kingdom. DESIGN: Prospective comparative case series. METHODS: Multiple regression modeling was used to derive a simplified formula for adjusting attempted spherical correction in myopic LASIK. An adaptation of Thibos' power vector method was then applied to derive adjustments to attempted cylindrical correction in eyes with 1.0 diopter (D) or more of preoperative cylinder. These elements were combined in a n
