Digital depression screening in HIV primary care in South Africa: mood in retroviral + application monitoring [MIR + IAM].

BACKGROUND: Integrating mental health care into HIV services is critical to addressing the high unmet treatment needs for people living with HIV and comorbid major depressive disorder. Introducing routine mental health screening at the primary health care level is a much needed diagonal approach to enhancing HIV care. In low-resource settings with a shortage of mental health care providers, eMental Health may provide a novel opportunity to attenuate this treatment gap and strengthen the health system. OBJECTIVE: To conduct formative health systems research on the implementation of routine dep

The emergence of the vertical birth in Ecuador: an analysis of agenda setting and policy windows for intercultural health.

Maternal mortality continues to claim the lives of thousands of women in Latin America despite the availability of effective treatments to avert maternal death. In the past, efforts to acknowledge cultural diversity in birth practices had not been clearly integrated into policy. However, in Otavalo (Ecuador) a local hospital pioneered the implementation of the 'Vertical Birth'-a practical manifestation of an intercultural health policy aimed at increasing indigenous women's access to maternity care. Drawing on agenda-setting theory, this qualitative research explores how the vertical birth pra

Community Perceptions on Integrating Animal Vaccination and Health Education by Veterinary and Public Health Workers in the Prevention of Brucellosis among Pastoral Communities of South Western Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease of veterinary, public health, and economic significance in most developing countries, yet there are few studies that show integrated human and veterinary health care intervention focusing on integration at both activity and actors levels. The aim of our study, therefore, was to explore community perceptions on integration of animal vaccination and health education by veterinary and public health workers in the management of brucellosis in Uganda. METHODS: This study used a qualitative design where six Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) that were homog

The nexus of mental health, human rights and sustainability: interdisciplinary approach.

This paper explores the direct and indirect effects of climate change on mental health. It then goes on to describe recent judgements in human rights courts globally on climate change and its mental health implications, holding national governments to account for the mental health implications of climate change. It then explores ways in which psychiatrists can start to influence this nexus of mental health, sustainability and human rights in their clinical practice, in research and education as well as in policy making. This influence can be at the level of the individual patient and at the lo

Thermography of the nose and ear in relation to the skin lesions of lepromatous leprosy, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, and lupus pernio.

The nasal and aural temperature patterns of 100 normal subjects have been investigated by infrared thermography, paying particular attention to possible errors of instrumentation and technique which may arise in such areas of complex morphology. Although by no means invariable, the pattern of themograms confirms that certain areas which are relatively cool are often affected in lepromatous leprosy, tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, and lupus pernio. In lepromatous leprosy, low temperature appears to govern the localization of disease in most parts of the body, and the possible reasons for this are

Operationalizing Local Ecological Knowledge for Aquatic Biodiversity Conservation: A Systematic Review and Management Framework.

Effective conservation and management of aquatic biodiversity is severely constrained by the absence of long-term ecological data in small-scale, tropical, and data-poor fisheries, where roughly one-quarter to one-third of freshwater fish species and 37.5% of elasmobranchs are threatened with extinction once Data Deficient species are accounted for. Conventional monitoring and stock-assessment tools are often financially and technically inaccessible in these systems, leaving managers without the evidence needed to prioritize conservation action or implement precautionary governance. How can hydrological connectivity inform catchment scale stormwater flood management?

Landscape-based stormwater solutions can attenuate runoff locally, yet translating hydrological benefits into catchment-scale flood mitigation often remains difficult. This shortfall reflects a current site-focused paradigm that overlooks the role of hydrological connectivity (HC) in organising flood inundation. HC has long informed process understanding in fluvial hydrology, but it has been less frequently operationalised as a spatial diagnostic for urban stormwater flooding. This study applies the spatially explicit, event-aware Index of Hydrological Connectivity (IHC) to diagnose connectivi

BRIGHT pathways: recommendations to improve the developmental follow-up of children with CHD in Canada - protocol for a nominal group study.

INTRODUCTION: Systematic developmental follow-up for children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is essential for the timely detection of developmental delays and disorders and to put in place the supports and resources necessary to maximise function and support family well-being. Best practice guidelines recommend follow-up for children with CHD at high risk of developmental delays. However, many countries, including Canada, have faced barriers such as limitations in financial and human resources which have limited their ability to implement these important neurodevelopmental follow-up progr

Tsetse flies and their control.

The authors use a quantitative modelling framework to describe and explore the features of the biology of tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) which are important in determining the rate of transmission of the African trypanosomiases between hosts. Examples are presented of the contribution of previous research on tsetse to quantified epidemiological and epizootiological understanding, and areas of current ignorance are identified for future study. Spatial and temporal variations in risk are important (but rarely-studied) determinants of the impact of trypanosomiasis on humans, domestic animals and ag

Neglected Tropical Diseases Elimination in the Philippines: Challenges and Gaps.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as soil-transmitted helminthiasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, leprosy, rabies, and food-borne trematodiasis are endemic in the Philippines. Despite global and national elimination efforts, these six NTDs remain a persistent burden to the poor, those living in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs), and other vulnerable groups. This narrative review synthesized data from Field Health Services Information System (FHSIS) reports of the Philippine Department of Health (DOH) from 2020 to 2024, the available literature from electro

Resolving the vertical versus horizontal conundrum: the potential of a "next generation" community health worker program to accelerate progress in TB control and at the same time strengthen primary health care.

Building on the experience of the community health worker (CHW) program at BRAC, the largest NGO in Bangladesh and also in the world, as well as on the experience of other successful CHW programs, a "next generation" of CHW programs is being envisioned in which a CHW would visit every home every month. Among many other activities they would carry out, CHWs would screen for symptoms of TB, obtain sputum specimens that would be collected by a supervisor, have them read at a local government laboratory, and then ensure treatment supervision for those who test positive. This is but one example of …

Strengthening nationally led approaches to new product introduction for HIV prevention.

As the pipeline of new HIV prevention technologies (including long-acting injectables, vaginal rings, antibody infusions, and, potentially, vaccines) expands careful planning is needed to ensure these innovations are effectively and equitably introduced within public health systems. Such planning is particularly important because the introduction and scale-up of HIV prevention tools has historically been hampered by insufficient national ownership, implementation in pilot settings that do not reflect the realities of broader public health systems, insufficient community engagement, and fragmen
