Despite being discussed preoperatively and included in consent forms, litigations that involve such injury continue to be prevalent. Our aim was to review all major litigations involving ureteral injuries related to minimally invasive gynecologic surgery to determine the most common allegations from plaintiffs and highlight factors that aided defendants. We used Lexis Nexis, a comprehensive legal database, to search all publicly available federal- and state-level cases on ureteral injury related to gynecologic s

Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a rare condition with a disproportionately high medico-legal profile. It occurs most frequently following a large central lumbar disc herniation, prolapse or sequestration. Review of the literature indicates that around 50-70% of patients have urinary retention (CES-R) on presentation with 30-50% having an incomplete syndrome (CES-I). The latter group, especially if the history is less than a few days, usually requires emergency MRI to confirm the diagnosis followed by prompt decompression by a suitably experienced surgeon. Every effort should be made to avoid CE

Therapeutic local anaesthesia, although a seemingly simple procedure, requires informed consent by the patient as well as proper indication and careful execution. Four cases selected from a medico-legal experience illustrate some severe complications. Nausea, dyspnoea and respiratory arrest (anaphylactic shock) occurred in a 34-year-old woman shortly after injection of 0.5% Bupivacaine into the paravertebral musculature for the treatment of acute neck pain. She had to be hospitalized for 18 days, at times requiring mechanical ventilation. Three other patients (women aged 40, 43 and 52 years, r
