Seven cases of total laryngo-glossectomy combined with mandibulectomy: A retrospective case series from a single institution.

OBJECTIVE: In cases of tongue, gingival, or base of tongue cancer with mandibular tumor invasion, total laryngo-glossectomy and mandibulectomy may be necessary. However, since such cases are limited in number, very few cases have been reported. This study aimed to investigate the treatment strategy involving total laryngo-glossectomy combined with mandibulectomy. METHODS: This study included patients with head and neck cancer who underwent radical surgery involving total laryngo-glossectomy combined with partial mandibulectomy between January 2014 and December 2023. We investigated the sex, a

Diagnosis of adult rhabdomyoma by fine needle aspiration cytology: a report of 2 cases.

BACKGROUND: Adult rhabdomyoma (ARh) is a rare, benign tumor originating in striated muscle cells. Ninety-three percent of the tumors occur in the head and neck region and sometimes mimic malignant tumors clinically. The preoperative correct diagnosis of this tumor is important as it can help in deciding on management. CASES: We report two cases of ARh diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). Case 1 was a 43-year-old male who presented with a recurrent tumor in the region of the floor of the mouth. Case 2 was a 37-year-old male who presented with soft tissue swellings in bilateral

Localized gingival enlargement associated with alveolar process expansion: peripheral ossifying fibroma coincident with central odontogenic fibroma.

BACKGROUND: Despite the common occurrence of localized gingival enlargements, which often represent reactive lesions, the temporal and spatial association of such a lesion with a central jaw lesion has not been reported. The purpose of this case report is to present the exceptional combination of a peripheral ossifying fibroma and a central odontogenic fibroma. The differential diagnosis and management of each lesion is reviewed. METHODS: A 45-year-old black female presented with a chief complaint of a painless protuberance in the left mandible of 1-year duration. Clinical and radiographic ex

The clinical and diagnostic imaging findings of osteosarcoma of the jaw.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the valuable clinical features and diagnostic imaging findings regarding the diagnosis of osteosarcoma of the jaw (OSJ). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The initial symptoms and diagnostic imaging findings of 10 patients with OSJ were analysed. The points analysed on the diagnostic images were as follows: any widening of the periodontal ligament space of the teeth on the periphery of the OSJ; the presence of radial spicules and Codman's triangle; any signs of bone destruction; and the patterns of osteogenesis. RESULTS: All patients had pain and/or swelling of the affected site,

Fibromatosis of the mandible in a child.

Fibromatosis represents a group of fibrous tumors showing clinic and biologic features between benign fibrous lesions and fibrosarcoma. These locally aggressive tumors have high recurrence rates (20% to 70%). A four-year-old boy presented with mandibular fibromatosis occupying the mandible completely and extending to the submandibular gland and soft tissues. Complete hemimandibulectomy and submandibular gland excision were performed followed by reconstruction with a curved Kirschner wire. No signs of recurrence was observed during a follow-up period of 18 months. In addition, no limitations in

Ameloblastic carcinoma: a clinicopathologic study and assessment of eight cases.

The term ameloblastic carcinoma is differentiated from the term malignant ameloblastoma and is defined as an ameloblastoma in which there is histologic evidence of malignancy in the primary tumor or the recurrent tumor (or metastasis), regardless of whether it has metastasized. Eight cases of ameloblastic carcinoma from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) are reported. The mean age of patients was 30.1 years, with no sex predilection noted. Seven cases involved the mandible and one involved the maxilla, with the posterior regions favored. The most common sign was swelling, although

Carbon-ion radiotherapy for clear cell odontogenic carcinomas.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell odontogenic carcinoma (CCOC) is a rare odontogenic malignant tumor. The standard treatment for CCOC is surgical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy (RT). Radiotherapy is generally considered in inoperable cases. However, there are no reports on definitive RT for CCOC, and the role of RT in patients with inoperable CCOC remains unknown. Therefore, in this report, we present two cases of carbon-ion (C-ion) RT for CCOC. CASE PRESENTATION: In case 1, a 73-year-old man with mandibular CCOC presented with recurrence in the inferior temporal fossa after two tumor resections. T

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia mimicking apical periodontitis: A case report.

Cemento-osseous dysplasia may present as a focal, periapical or florid lesion in the mandible or maxilla. The lesion may sometimes appear similar to peri-radicular lesions on a periapical radiograph. This report presents a case with irreversible pulpitis and root resorption as well as a mixed radiolucent/radiopaque lesion around a mandibular molar tooth root. Root canal treatment was performed and because of the radiographic signs of root resorption and the patient's fear of having a malignant disease, periapical surgery was also performed. The histopathology report confirmed the presence of f

Mandibular reconstruction with the titanium hollow screw reconstruction plate (THORP) system: evaluation of 62 cases.

The titanium hollow screw reconstruction plate (THORP) system for reconstruction of lower jaw defects provides a functional stable fixation and is used as a long-term or permanent implant in tumor surgery and in traumatology. The rigid fixation of the head of the screw to the plate, avoiding unphysiologic loads to the bone underneath the plate, and the titanium plasma-coated perforated hollow screws, enabling the development of direct bone-titanium contact as well as the ingrowth of bone into the lumen and perforations, are the major advantages of this system compared to conventional systems.

Digital cutting guide and endoscopically-assisted vertical ramus osteotomy to treat condylar osteochondroma: a long-term study.

We have introduced an effective treatment for mandibular condylar osteochondroma with a digital cutting guide and endoscopically-assisted vertical ramus osteotomy (VRO). Eleven patients with unilateral condylar osteochondroma, who did not require orthognathic surgery or had less than 3mm deviation of the chin and a stable occlusion, were treated during the period April 2013-January 2017 with a digital cutting guide and endoscopically-assisted VRO. Clinical data collected included the occlusion, facial contour, and maximum mouth opening (MMO). Computed tomographic (CT) scans were taken before a

Application of Intraoperative Navigation for the Reconstruction of Mandibular Defects With Microvascular Fibular Flaps-Preliminary Clinical Experiences.

BACKGROUND: A microvascular fibular flap is the main option for the reconstruction of mandibular defects. This paper introduces an innovative strategy for the accurate fabrication of fibular flaps. METHODS: Nine patients with mandibular tumors were included in this study. The mandibular reconstruction planning was performed using MIMICS 10.01. One reconstruction plate was preformed. During the operation, the fibular flap was fabricated and implanted using the BrainLab navigation system. Six to 12 months after surgery, computed tomography data were acquired and compared with preoperative plann

Temporomandibular joint chondrosarcoma: Case report.

Tumours of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) often mimic common conditions of the TMJ, such as TMJ dysfunction syndrome, leading to a delay in the diagnosis. Chondrosarcoma of the TMJ is a rare tumour, with only 18 cases described in the literature. The initial surgical attempt at removal is of important, as aggressive excision offers the best chance for successful treatment. Chondrosarcoma present at the surgical resection margins has a poor prognosis. We present a case of chondrosarcoma of the right TMJ. In our case, combined diagnostic techniques consisting of a panoramic radiograph, comput

Mandibular reconstruction with the free vascularized fibular flap: utility of three-dimensional computerized tomography.

Oncologic management in the mandibular area leaves important osseous defects, that require reconstructive procedures with vascularized osseous tissues. Mandibular reconstructions with free vascularized fibular flaps have well-defined indications and some advantages over various other types of vascularized osseous grafts, because the fibular graft permits the reconstruction of large mandibular defects. This study demonstrates the usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) tomography as a tool to determine the size of the defect, and with angiotomography, to define the anatomic pattern of the vascular

A diagnostic approach to lytic lesions of the mandible.

Fifty seven patients with histologically proven cyst-like lesions of the mandible are reviewed. The importance of combining radiographic with scintigraphic imaging is stressed. These two imaging modalities are complementary in demonstrating both the biological activity and the extent of the lesion. In osteomyelitis the bone scan, which is more sensitive than the radiograph, is also the method of choice in assessing the result of treatment.

Mandibular central mucoepidermoid carcinoma with distant metastasis.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant salivary gland tumour. Central mucoepidermoid carcinomas (CMC) are an exceedingly rare subgroup, representing 2-4% of all cases. The authors report on a case of CMC in a patient who presented with trigeminal neuropathy, trismus and distant metastasis. The possible pathogenesis of CMC and criteria for diagnosis are discussed.

Malignant calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor of the mandible: report of a case with pulmonary metastasis showing remarkable response to platinum derivatives.

We describe a case of CEOT of the mandible, which underwent malignant transformation and developed metastatic tumors of the lung after repeated local recurrence. The primary tumor revealed typical histological features of benign CEOT showing sheets of polyhedral epithelial cells associated with abundant eosinophilic amyloid-like materials. On the other hand, the locally recurrent tumors had malignant features, such as increased nuclear pleomorphism with frequent mitotic figures and vascular invasion of tumor cells, as well as increased proliferative activity assessed by immunostaining for Ki-6

[Multiple cysts of the jaws: basocellular nevomatosis].

The authors presents two cases of basocellular nevomatosis with multiple maxillary cysts. He thought it important to point out the presence of a cyst in the left styloid apophysis, as up to now, epidermoid cysts have never been observed in other facial bones apart from the maxillae in BCN. In conclusion, the author presents three casses, which although showing multiple cysts or pseudocysts of the maxillae, do not belong to the BCN syndrome.
