Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers and causes of death in females in Tajikistan; yet less than half of the adult women in Tajikistan have heard of breast cancer. Limited access to health care contributes to late stage presentation. We developed a public-private partnership to implement a breast cancer awareness intervention in a low-resource community in Khorog, Tajikistan. We trained local health professionals in clinical breast care and conducted a breast cancer screening and treatment program. The partnership involved visiting USA-based health professionals working alongside lo

PURPOSE: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the initial tumor location as a prognostic factor in breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC).
METHODS: Between March 2002 and January 2007, a total of 179 patients with stage II/III breast cancer underwent NAC followed by breast surgery. Using physical and radiologic findings, patients were grouped by their initial tumor location into inner/both quadrant (upper/lower inner quadrant involvement +/- multicentric tumor involving outer quadrant; n=97) and outer quadrant (n=82) tumor groups. All patients received neoadj

BACKGROUND: Cowden syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder with a predisposition to multiple benign and malignant tumors. In our patient, in addition to breast and endometrial malignancies as well as facial trichilemmomas, she was noted to have multiple meningiomas, pancreatic lipomas and lung cysts. These latter lesions have been noted in previous Cowden syndrome case reports, but are not included in the diagnostic criteria at this time. To our knowledge, this is the first case of multiple meningiomas in this syndrome. Further studies are therefore warranted to assess the significance of t

INTRODUCTION: Malignant breast tumors are often hormone-dependent, and to this end, both estrogen and progesterone receptors are good prognostic markers for evaluation of the outcomes after therapy. In addition, HER-2/neu, whose expression is increasingly being associated with poor prognosis of breast cancer, has predictive potential after immunotherapy. Cytochrome P450 3A4 is highly involved in the metabolism of steroids. Thus, we investigated the impact of CYP 3A4 gene variants in association with clinical outcomes in African American (AFAM) versus Caucasian (CAU) patients with breast cancer

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The incidence of breast cancer increases with advancing age and in clinical practice approximately 50% of new cases occur in women over the age of 65 years. Although breast cancer in elderly patients presents more favorable biological characteristics than similar-stage cancer in younger women, disease control still remains uncertain and is becoming a major health problem.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1984 and 2006, 133 patients aged over 65 with operable breast cancer underwent surgical treatment. Patients with ductal or lobular carcinoma in situ, bilateral breast cancer

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Lymph node status is one of the decisive prognostic factors of breast cancer. Chemotherapy targeting regional lymphatic tissues has emerged as a promising therapy for malignancies with high tendency to disseminate lymphatically. This study was to detect drug concentration in axillary lymph nodes of patients with breast cancer after lymphatic chemotherapy (LC), and to investigate effect of LC on accumulation of antitumor drugs in regional lymph nodes through comparing with the effect of intravenous chemotherapy (VC).
METHODS: Sixty patients with breast cancer, confirmed

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the overall risk of breast cancer and breast cancer characteristics in women given supradiaphragmatic radiation therapy for Hodgkin lymphoma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical records of 653 female patients who received supradiaphragmatic radiation therapy for Hodgkin lymphoma at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn, between 1950 and 1993 were abstracted, and follow-up questionnaires were mailed. In 4 patients, breast cancer was diagnosed before Hodgkin lymphoma was discovered.
RESULTS: The median age of 649 patients at supradiaphragmatic radiation therapy was 31.8 years (ra

As male breast cancer remains rare entity (less than 1% of cases of breast cancer), most of our current knowledge of it has been extrapolated from its female counterpart. The prevalence of male breast cancer increases with age, and the presentation occurs at an average age of approximately 60 years, 10 years older than in females with the disease. The majority of patients present with a painless, firm, subareolar mass, and the tumors are usually larger than 2 cm in diameter. There may be fixation to skin. Mammography and ultrasonography are useful to distinguish between breast cancer and gynec

It is important to identify T1-substage breast carcinomas (BCs) which are inherently aggressive, so that these can be managed more assertively. The purpose of this study was to distinguish those T1 BCs with the potential to metastasize to axillary lymph nodes from those lacking that ability by multiparametric analysis of several clinicopathologic features. The authors studied 197 patients with invasive BC who had undergone modified radical mastectomy; 161 tumors were ductal and 26 were lobular BCs. The study group was stratified by age into two groups: </=34 years (n = 34) and 35-84 years (n =

Axillary lymph node status is an important prognostic feature for patients with breast cancer, but the therapeutic value of axillary lymphadenectomy is controversial. It would be useful to be able to predict the status of axillary lymph nodes before lymphadenectomy from prognostic features evaluated in a previous breast biopsy. This prediction would be useful to optimize the treatment of patients with breast cancer who are unlikely to have nodal metastases. We studied 279 patients with invasive breast carcinoma treated with modified radical mastectomy or with lumpectomy combined with axillary

The study documented in this article was performed to define the clinical and morphologic features of cystic hypersecretory carcinoma (CHC) and cystic hypersecretory hyperplasia (CHH) of the breast. Both lesions are characterized by the formation of cystically dilated ducts containing a homogeneous eosinophilic secretion that resembles thyroid colloid. In most cases CHC features micropapillary intraductal carcinoma, occasionally giving rise to a high-grade, invasive carcinoma that is absent from CHH. Electron microscopy of the cystic component in one case of CHC showed ultrastructural characte

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is a major global health concern, with tumor heterogeneity and tumor microenvironment (TME) dynamics limiting the predictive value of conventional prognostic markers such as age, tumor size, grade, nodal status, lymphovascular invasion (LVI), and ER/PR/HER2 status. Stromal CD10, a zinc-dependent metalloproteinase expressed by fibroblasts and myoepithelial cells, promotes tumor invasion through extracellular matrix remodeling and is associated with aggressive tumor features. This study evaluates stromal CD10 expression in invasive breast carcinoma and its c

BACKGROUND/AIM: Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) is a strong prognostic factor associated with poor survival outcomes in breast cancer. However, the clinical benefit of postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) for early-stage disease remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate PMRT efficacy and related prognostic factors in real-world settings.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 322 postoperative breast cancer patients with pathologically confirmed LVI who received radiotherapy (RT) between October 2017 and July 2020. Patients were categorized into two groups: Group A (pT1-2N1M0, n=

Breast cancer survivors are at elevated risk for osteoporosis due to chemotherapy-induced ovarian dysfunction, prolonged endocrine therapy, and premature menopause, and anti-resorptive therapy remains the standard of care even though some patients decline pharmacologic treatment. We describe a 55-year-old postmenopausal woman, treated 19 years earlier for stage II hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive ductal carcinoma of the right breast, who developed osteoporosis on routine screening. Treatment had included neoadjuvant chemotherapy, modified radical mas

Background/Objectives: Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare malignancy accounting for less than 1% of all breast cancers, and current treatment recommendations are largely extrapolated from studies in women. We aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics, treatment patterns, survival outcomes, and prognostic factors of male breast cancer patients treated at a tertiary referral center. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 45 patients with histopathologically confirmed MBC treated between January 2015 and July 2025. Demographic, clinicopathological, treatment, and follow-up data were

BACKGROUND: Modified radical mastectomy (MRM) is associated with persistent psychological and physical sequelae in geriatric breast cancer survivors. This study examines the 60-month longitudinal associations between pain catastrophizing, depression, pain interference, shoulder dysfunction, and lymphedema.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 89 geriatric women (median age = 72, IQR = 69-76, range = 65-88) who underwent MRM were assessed at baseline (pre-surgery), 1, 3, and 2 months after completion of radiotherapy (median 5 months post-surgery, IQR 4.5-5.5), and 12, 24, 36, 48, and 6

The most common sites of metastasis for breast cancer are the soft tissues, bones, lungs, liver and brain; however, metastases to the gastrointestinal tract and thyroid gland from breast cancer rarely occur. The present study describes the case of a 30-year-old woman who developed gastric and thyroid metastases 5 years after her initial diagnosis of invasive ductal breast carcinoma. The initial pathological diagnosis when receiving modified radical mastectomy was invasive ductal carcinoma, and further immunohistochemical examination revealed the cancer to be estrogen receptor (-), progesterone

BACKGROUND: Invasive breast carcinoma with a choriocarcinomatous pattern (IBC-CP) is extremely rare, and its molecular basis is yet unclear. The choriocarcinomatous pattern is characterized by the biphasic arrangement of multinucleated syncytiotrophoblast-like cells around clusters of monotypic tumor cells in a hemorrhagic background, along with β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) expression. The differentiation of IBC-CP from metastatic choriocarcinoma of the breast (MC-B) is difficult due to the histologic similarity.
METHODS: Based on a literature review and our own case, the clinicopat
